The Medium-est of Large ships

Looking at size comparisons of the ships on youtube, and was wondering why the Orca and the Clipper are large ships when the next iterations in their lines are almost twice as big. It seems like they were originally thought of as being Medium, but were bumped up for some reason or another. There isn't exactly a lacking number of medium size ships, but I found this a bit curious.
It would be neat to have a Medium size luxury liner, something to get you into those outposts to find luxury trips with something bigger than the Dolphin.

Was the Orca actually intended to be a Medium size ship initially? The Imperial Clipper as well?
What are your thoughts?

Clipper is too wide for the Medium pads / hangars

Orca fits perfectly on medium pads and inside medium hangars.
So no idea why Orca is classified as a large pad ship. It's a complete mystery and i dont remember seeing any reasonable explanation for it - so i would assume it was a fluke in the paper work related to landing pad certification.

The two other outliers are:
Type-7 - too tall for medium hangars, so it's a Large ship
Type-6 - too tall for small hangars, so it's a Medium ship 😒

These two bother me most because, without the need for a hangar, they could land on appropriate pads on ground settlements, although I understand that all pads are treated equally, so to differentiate sizes and permissions for planetary pads might require a substantial amount of coding, and who knows what could be broken in the process. :cautious:

Lots of requests over the years for the Clipper to be medium pad accessible and you can see why. I’ve often wondered if it was initially designed as a medium but forced into the large category simply to provide ‘balance.

The Clipper is the ship I’m hoping Gutamaya hand over to their AMG, Arbath or Overfinch departments - Zhuzh it up a bit, give it a better all round canopy view, maybe even a complete cut and shut to take a few feet off here and there. If Gutamaya won’t give us the Imperial explorer we’re looking for hand the Clipper over to a backroom bunch of boffins and engineers to play around with.

I‘m adamant in my belief the Clipper is the ship we all want them to get right🙂

Nothing wrong with the Orca though. It’s the classiest cruise liner out there, an Orca’s clientele aren’t people found in Outposts so no need for it to be a medium. Besides, they need the room for the Crown Green Bowling facilities.

At least the Clipper is explainable. It's fast, it's maneuverable, it's powerful, it has a huge shield for something so fast and it has a fairly large hold for such a fast combat ship. All because it's a lightweight heavy.

The Type-7 is just sadness.

It's annoying.
Clipper can't compete with cutter with anything but price. And since it's rep locked, well, it's not a really good argument IMO.
Python, a multi purpose ship, is the best medium trader.
Python is also one of the best, if not the best, medium NPC transporter

If clipper was dropped to medium, and so did T7 and Orca, it might start to make a lot more sense. OFC, it might need some balancing here and there.

The guys that benefit from my services in Robigo Mines would like to have a word with you.

And yes, some of them are criminals and yes, some of them would like to travel in Luxury Cabins while my Python, pompously named MSC Black Vista, can only provide First Class Cabins

Orca seems like the best candidate to be reconsidered for a different pad. Shame the Type-7 and Type-6 are too tall for their respective smaller pads. Their ability to be smaller would be a nice inclusion in their potential spots.
The width of the Clipper is harder to reconcile into a medium slot. You'd have to reshape the whole thing.

Scallywags the lot of ‘em, they deserve to travel in the bowels of a Python. Of course, if they really want to visit the magnificence of the Sirius Atmospherics beacon and they have credits to drop, I do have a Python that’ll suffice. The really wealthy ones can go by Dolphin.:)

I agree. I would be fantastic to have something other than JUST the python to get in those medium spots. I mean, what's the fun of only one ship having all the best valuations? Mix it up.
Make the Type 7 fit the medium pads. Make the landing bays taller. Same for the small pads, make it fit the Type 6. Go ahead and make the Orca classify as Medium.
Will it ruffle some feathers of purists? Sure, but that's ok. We'll get some fun new options!
