Newcomer / Intro The Mellenium Falcon of Smuggling Ships!

So, you want to be a smuggler eh? There are many guides out there on how to do it. Yet, what is the best ship in which to perform your smuggling operations. Well, hands down, it's the Cobra!

He's how you build your Mellenium Falcon...

Strip down your cobra and sell the unnecessary modules. Weapons, dscan etc. Yes. That includes shields! A good smuggler needs no shields. They generate heat, add weight, take up space that can be used for cargo! Buy the biggest cargo rig per slot you can. You should be able to hit 60 tones capacity. Almost three times a stripped down hauler!

Upgrade your thrusters and frame shift drive as best you can without draining your investment funds. You can add ECM module. Don't bother with chaff module as you are so fast none of the weapons that chaff would help you against will be in range to hurt you. I've never had to use the ECM module but it's there just in case I guess. Easily dump able if you need to.

Note, I never have more then 50% of my funds invested in any one cargo run.

Now, other then when you are entering the station cold in silent running, run your engines always at four power pips. Smuggling into stations is actually easy with the right techniques.

Look what you have. A ship that is very fast, agile, and can take a couple punches without shields. Plus, you have a 60 tonne capacity for your smuggled goods. You should never be interdicted if you know the tricks but if you are you can out run everyone and jump quickly.

Go forth and smuggle!

Hell I don't even run silent, I just boost right into the space station outright. Once you get inside they can't scan you anymore. The Cobra is great tho, but you should really check out the Asp, now that my friend...

Ya you can boost but my system gets me there almost as fast with zero chance of getting scanned. It's a hybrid of the turn everything off school and the blast like hell and hope you don't smash into something school of smuggling.

The asp is a great ship but just too expensive on a couple levels. Fist the base cost is what, six million? Upgrading modules to make her better a couple more million. Repairs are crazy expensive. I wouldn't upgrade to the Asp till I had a nut of at least ten million credits. A newbie can quickly attain a cobra. This is the newbie forum by the way.

I hear that, its just that...well...I never thought of the Millennium Falcon as a cheap ship you know?

Yep. The Melenium Falcon was held together with spit and wookie hair. she was known for her speed. She made the Kessel run in less then 12 parsecs! Now that is fast! Cobra smuggler can hold more cargo though.

I'm driving an ASP now, just about maxed out with all the bells and whistles, but there's no doubt that a Cobra is a terrific platform. It's really versatile and fast so you can fight when you want to and run when you should. There are times I think about moving back into a Cobra, but the ASP is really exceptional as well. It gives up a little speed, but the added durability and firepower make the tradeoff worth it. Equipped with 6 beam lasers it'll vaporize a Sidewinder or Eagle with one sustained burst. A Viper only lasts about 2 passes. With A5 shields and Military grade armor, you begin laughing when you get an interdiction.

ASP is a great ship....if you have the credits to buy one, fit one, repair one and insure one. Just too expensive. If you have the credits then the ASP is a good choice. But for the purpose of the thread and forum, the ASP is a no go.

Another way is to become allied with the system. I smuggle in my Type 9 from time to time and never get scanned anymore in allied systems.

How can it be fast? A parsec is a measure of distance, not time. (Just over 3¼ ly.)

Nerd Alert....

Kessel is next to a black hole. Because the millenium falcon was so fast, it did not have to go so far around Kessel. It could take a short route and still make it without being sucked in.

Mililinium Falcon meh, I'm more of a Serenity kinda guy myself. Ed needs a false Cargo mod to hide the smuggled goods. They'd cost more be smaller and heavier maybe but undetectable.

I can't seem to drop my Cobra's heat low enough, no matter what I do.. Is heat efficiency dependant on the modules I have equipped? I turn everything I can off but I still sit at about 30%
There's that whole suspension of belief and movie magic thing.
Or Lucas not having the slightest clue what he's talking about, there's that thing too :p

Only if we can get little toy dinosaurs to put on our dashboard.

Allied is your goal to reduce the chance of scanning and attack. Turing off all your modules then coasting in in silent running is very good too.

I approach from the direction of the nearby orbital body so that when I drop out of super cruise I'm facing the entrance to the station. To avoid interdiction on the way in I position my course so that I am above or below the traffic. Since you can only interdict from behind your target, it is easy for me to spot someone trying to interdict me. Now, the cobra is so agile it if easy to defeat an interdiction but I avoid them by just dropping out of super cruise if someone is trying to come in behind me. I count to 30 then resume my journey.

When you land facing the station entrance, turn off fight assist, align towards the entrance, hit silent running, boost towards the entrance. Shields are a major cause of heat. Since I don't have shields, my heat sig is small ins silent running. Once I get within 1k of the entrance I start up flight assist, set speed to 50%, drop engin power to one pip and enter the station. Drop silent running. Dock. Takes less then a minute and never been scanned.

This method is a bit slower then the Dash method but less likely to end up a smudge on the station or a head on collision in the gate. It's faster then the turn everything off method. All three work. I just prefer the speed and safety of my method.
