Modes The modes are brilliant!

The way the design has made it possible for players to be able to adjust their game upon their mood or preferred play style is absolutely genius. Especially because there are no downsides on choosing one mode over the other. You log into the game, you decide, you play. You can fly around the galaxy undisturbed, fly with like minded people, or face the slings and arrows of public mode. Elite isn't hampered by players who deem a system "their system" and dictate how other people play, only when those other players have signed up for it are. Just as it should be.

Personally, I will never jump through a player's hoops. Game developers are the only people who I allow to construct such hoops. And this has always been a barrier for me to play MMOs. Elite's system makes it possible for me to play that MMO, on my own terms and under the rules the developers have set. Now I've seen all the threads of would be Napoleonic Little Tyrants who would love nothing more than me to dance for them, and they'll argue how it's unfair they can't make me dance for them, and for me that is testament the modes are working as designed.

So, tip of the hat to Frontier, who made it possible for an occasional reclusive as me to enjoy an MMO on my terms, and even be tempted to dip my toes in social events in that MMO.

The only thing missing is a "do not disturb" comms message. But that's not the modes fault.

By the way, the mods are brilliant as well!
And sometimes, even the mood is brilliant.

I have to admit I love the modes here...the design is literally flawless even if one doesnt like them. Perversly, if there were no complaints at all then chances are its not designed perfectly at all. Along with that flight model I love, I gotta say the mode system is right up there with my favourite things.

Without the modes, m pretty sure I wouldnt be here at all...not after what happened in my first few months here in open, one step forward two back being the order of the day. In solo, I can ignore engineers whereas in open, they are literally a requirement just to survive so I wont burn out grinding what I simply do not need. Open players poisoned their own well, their problem not mine so either they fix it themselves or whine to frontier to fix it for them. Either way...

Long live the mode system :p

I also like the fact that what we call 'modes' aren't really - they're just instancing filters. When you understand that then you start to understand why there is only one BGS, and why changing it would be a huge amount of work.

"You can't give Ziggy more rep because he already has too much"

Wow, that's a new message :p

Seriously, well written. The inclusion of modes was a major selling point for me, and unlike some people, i actually investigated the game before purchasing it, and therefore knew modes and a shared BGS were a thing.

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.

I'll give him some rep for the both of us, mate. :)

In the interests of Britishness and our unquenchable desire to build people up just so we can knock them right back down on to their backsides again can we now have a negative rep button, (like in ye olde forum days), just for Ziggy please? - thanks in advance 'cos I know you will TJ!

:D

Plus I just gave him rep to see if it worked (it did) and I'd like it back now, please.

I agree. WHen I started with ED I didn't know about the modes. I expected Open to be a bit scary. If I'd known then what I now know about engineering I'd have been more scared, but at the time I thought I would have a 50-50 chance against any other Sidewinder. I soon noticed Solo, then I was told about Mobius and realised how brilliantly economical the game design was. All gameplay styles accomodated at a stroke, while only having to maintain one galaxy on a server; all modes realised just by adjusting instancing!

It's been pointed out that other MMOs don't do this. In Lord of the Rings Online which I also play, the world is PVE but instances are created for raids and there's a PVP region. But the ED method is so neat that I think it's only a matter of time before it's copied.

+1 can't rep you further, but agree completely. The mode system isn't going anywhere.

If I had one caveat, Private Groups could use a bit more in the way of Admin tools for controlling their groups since there aren't any GM's in this game preventing exploitation of the system design.
