The most infuriating and difficult game ever.

You thought Eve had a steep learning curve? Think again.

I played Eve for a lot of years but it didn't take me three days of battling the game mechanics and rage quitting before I got hold of it. I'm starting to think it was a mistake to invest so heavily in this before knowing enough about it (DK2 + X52 Pro).

I've lost five ships, made not a single penny, shot one NPC and I'm pretty much done with it I think.

  • The map is almost impossible to navigate in the rift. Believe me I've watched enough demonstrations and tried enough keybinds but I cannot get any information on any systems.
  • Map is laggy and you never know if you're seeing all the trade routes.
  • There's no information about systems you're looking at (how many stations, what's the local population of pilots to avoid major jump lag).
  • It's totally hit and miss whether you can navigate to the next system. Sometimes there's good trade routes but turns out it's like 50 hops away, even though the map shows it's right next door.
  • There's no apparent rationale behind why you can plot a course. I tried to get to Lave (being a big time supporter back in '84). I can't get there and I've no idea why.
  • You think you've got it sorted out, buy some cargo, take off, jump. Pick a random station because you have no idea what's there until you get there. Only to find you can't get in (Docking request denied x 40). Log out and back in to dock.
  • Interdiction's are far too common, sometimes taking five minutes of staring at a full green bar only to have to log out and back in again to get out of it.
  • Colour scheme needs changing so you can actually see anything. Set it green, great but then you can't figure out what the map is trying to tell you.
  • Most of the time I can't even figure out where I need to land and crash into the station because it's back against black. Ship lights are no help at all.
  • There's no way of communicating with people to get any help from anyone. You're on your own commander.

Three days, zero progress. Too frustrated.

Long time Eve player.

OK so about ship number 6....

Stick with it CMDR. Once you get the hang of it the feeling of achievement will be all the more sweet :)

EDIT: To address some of your issues. The system right next door but I can't get to it issue is related to your frame shift drives capability and your mass. Upgrade FSD and/or lower mass to increase single jump range. As for all this logging in and out? No idea why you are doing that, I have never had to log in and out for anything :/ This forum is a great place to get help if you need it. Generally though youll find raging will bring out the worst in people so better to come and ask before the dummy spit ;)

To be honest its sounding like maybe some of your issues are actually issues with the Oculus rift rather than with the game...

This post has to be the single best example of why FD need to get some kind of written manual out right now and post it on the launcher with big letters. Copying it to the Forums as a sticky would be a good idea too. New players should not have to go looking for how to do basic stuff. It should be put right in front of their faces so it is the FIRST thing they see when logging on.

Keep plugging away at it mate, you'll get the hang of it eventually. It just 'clicks' after a while. it did for me.

Probably best taking a small break and coming back refreshed?

Where do you live; happy to give you some coaching ;)

I play with a DK2 and X52 and it is the best experience I had had with a computer game since I was 12.

So you have a list of complains mostely related to either
A. Bugs
or
B. Game design that you happen to dislike.

So, disregarding the fact that bugs is expected and will be sorted out and that game design wont always look after your own personal interests, you go on a rant about how experienced you are at point and click mmorpgs and thus cant understand why you dont master a first person spaceflight simulation. Seems valid...

And yes, buying a rift and hotas for a game you havent even played yet IS a mistake.

Dont treat this game as Eve and maybe youll enjoy it.

I'll try to respond to your points, but I'm too lazy to quote each line :p

1. I can't say anything about the rift, as I don't own one. I did hear that it's difficult, but I can't really commend on it.
2. Map is silk smooth here. Perhaps it's because of your rift? Did you have the hardware to support it? It needs quite a decent machine, since you're projecting the image twice.
3. There is information. You go to system view, and you can see all the system information/ planets/ belts etc. The population is actually on the galaxy map, when you have the system selected. If there is no system data, then you need to explore it. Not everything is automatically explored in the game. - That goes down the route of the exploration career.
4. You can change plotted routes from economical to fastest. But remember your jump distance is severely impaired by the weight of your goods. If you have a full cargo hold then you won't be able to jump as far. I would suggest trying to upgrade your FSD to jump further.
5. There is a limit of the number of jumps you can plot. The best thing to do is plot a course to the nearest place to your destination. Get there and plot the rest of the route to your target.
6. This depends on the station and the number of players there. I would suggest leaving the starting area. There are a lot of players there. Alternatively, hop into solo play, dock and log back into open if you desire.
7. Never had that problem with the stuck green bar, sounds like a connection issue. Ensure your internet is stable. As for the interdiction themselves. If you carry a lot of cargo and are running through low security areas, then of course you'll be interdicted. (You say you played EVE, then I'm sure you understand the risks of carrying expensive goods across the galaxy)
8. Don't have a problem with the original colours. You can change them, but note that this isn't 'officially supported'. FDEV are looking into that. The reason why it's like what it is now, is so that players can have a play with it themselves.
9. Try turning up gamma. These stations are massive, and very hard to miss. Sounds like your settings are too dark.
10. Select another player by cycling through targets, once selected focus the top panel, and you have the options to open text/ voice chat.

As a long time EVE player, I'm surprised you are having difficulties with the learning curve.

I think the original Elite was much harder myself. Docking was harder, making money was WAY harder, and pirates (particularly in anarchy systems) were fearsome.

Think it's pretty amusing that EVE players are finding this game too hardcore (I played EVE for years starting in '04 btw).

Can't comment on Rift stuff, but I think there's a bit of hyperbole in some of your comments born of frustration. If you're being sent '50 hops' for a system 'right next door' I suspect user error is the cause. Other than that make sure you have routes set to 'fastest' rather than 'economical' because that can send you round the houses a bit.

Not had any issues with docking denial myself, are you trying to dock at an Outpost in a busy starter system? This can be an issue since pads are limited and people just sit there rather than dropping into the hanger, which removes them from the instance hence freeing up the pad. This probably does need looking at and outposts should really auto-hanger pilots when they land.

Not knowing what is in a system until you get there is good, it encourages exploration and promotes the value of local knowledge. Don't expect the game to spoon feed you like others do.

Interdictions are in no way too common, if you'd played beta you would know what constant interdiction felt like. Now it's fine and related to things such as rep, cargo, criminality and system security. If you're getting interdicted 'too much' the onus is on you to change something, not the game.

No idea what you mean about trouble landing because the station is 'black against black', can you explain? Perhaps a problem with your graphics card or you have gamma set extremely low. Maybe don't go flying towards outposts at full speed until you learn their configuration and stop crashing into the infrastructure.

Comms do suck and many of us have been asking for them to be improved for some time, hopefully FD will actually listen and ignore the anti-social 'no space is all about isolation, don't break my immersion' crew.

3. You are not given information about most systems because exploration makes a big part of ED and it can be quite lucrative in the beginning. I would suggest exploring before trading to get familiar with your surroundings. Also, all the players are not playing on the same server as you, players are divided into "islands"; plus space is big, really big, you have no idea how mindboggling big it is, so meeting other players can be a while.
4. Your ships' jump range will be shown on the galaxy in faint lines that will show you which systems you can currently reach. Yes, it takes research and exploration of your surroundings to find the good deals, nothing in this game is handed to you (that's by design).
5. You can plot courses, but only at a limited distance. It took me a few minutes to figure out how to get to Lave, I was 140ly away but I was able to find 2 in-between systems to plot to and used those as stepping stones to get to Lave, not a huge ordeal.

I'm not sure what your issue is with interdictions, when you get interdicted you have the opportunity to avoid it by following your escape vector and get your blue bar up high enough and then you will be set free.

I also can't figure out what your issue is with "where I need to land...". Once you get near the station request docking permission, then fly into the "toaster" (entrance) and find your docking pad number, landing gear, line it up with the pad guides and set 'er down gently.

Check the tutorials as they can help with a lot of the basics.

I was a complete newb and made over 30k on opening day in my sidey just by doing bulletin board missions. I learned though that hunting wanteds are a faster way of earning money and made like 70k my second day in my Eagle. Maybe it depends on your starting location. I started in LHS 3447. I'm still struggling a little. I have no clue on how to make money trading (seems too complicated for my brain). So I think I'm going to stick with combat for now. I can't say I experienced your problems. I've never played Eve and I'm mostly just a FPS type gamer so this is a whole new world for me and I didn't have any issues.

I may also try exploration when I get something better to jump in.

As mentioned earlier it sounds like you may have some PC performance/hardware issues.
