The names of the new Galactic Regions - what do we think?

I am definitely more happy with actual names than numbers, and while i think using community names would have been better, these ones are alright.

I have no problems with the regions and naming as it is right now.

The names are fine.

They are pretty good. Not perfect, but I can happily live with it.

I have to say I'm surprised by how many people seem happy with the current names... and I even find myself wondering, how closely did any of you actually look at them?! Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion - and if so many people really are happy with the current crop of names, maybe I should keep my own opinion to myself, so as not to ruin it for others. But the more I have looked at the galaxy map, the more problems I have with the names that Frontier chose...

I mean, look at this:

Vulcan Gate
Trojan Belt
Newton's Vault
Dryman's Point
Ryker's Hope
Odin's Hold
Aquila's Halo
Achilles' Altar

...Is it just me, or are these names a bit repetitive?! We even have the classic Formidine Rift, and a new region called the Formorian Frontier! Formidine... Formorian. Why?! o_O

It might be that Frontier chose these names for perfectly valid reasons, which we are not privy to at this time - maybe there really are Vulcans in Vulcan Gate, or a colony of Master Chefs in Aquila's Halo, I don't know. And it might be that they had to make up their own names for legal reasons, too... in which case, I'm glad that any of the community names made it through, albeit in some altered form (Tenebrae and Dryman's Point are both very welcome.) But I still wish that there was more variety from one name to the next... I suppose some repetition is inevitable, but this is ridiculous!

AND some of the names are in the wrong place, as well!!!1!1

I don't mean to bite the hand that feeds, but... I'm sure Frontier could do a better job than this. And I think the names of the Galactic Regions should inspire some measure of passion in the playerbase, rather than just making people think, "Yeah, they're okay."

All I see with those fancy red letters is how the English language it pretty damn similar to itself with words. Let me red text you how different their names are.

Vulcan's Gate: A gate to the roman god Vulcan
Trojan Belt:The belt of a person from the civilization of troy
Newton's Vault:The vault of Sir Isaac Newton
Drymans Point:A location of a dryman in a dryhouse
Ryker's Hope:The hope of Ryker, a fictional character from Star Trek: Next Generation
Odin's Hold:The home of Odin, a viking god
Aquila's Halo:A halo owned by an eagle
Achilles' Altar:The alter of a Greek hero named Achilles
Formadine Rift:A rift of despair
Formorian Frontier: The frontier of monsters from Irish mythology called Formorians

Their meanings are VERY different from each other. You also noted Dryman's Point as being an excellent name. It is, in fact, a pretty mundane name in that list. Aquila's Halo is the other mundane one.

But, surely you can see the point I'm trying to make?

Jam Jar: A container for preserves
Ram Tar: An Engineer specialising in Guardian technology
Mam's Car: My mother's vehicle
Sam's Bar: The setting for the sitcom "Cheers"

They're all completely different!

But they all sound the same...

And the thing is, if the names Frontier have chosen are just names, then their meaning is irrelevant. For example, if there really IS a "Gate to the roman god Vulcan" in Vulcan Gate, then it makes sense to name the Region after it... but if there isn't, if it's just a name that Frontier chose because they thought it sounded cool, then they could have chosen another name entirely, and it would have been just as valid.

And if Frontier are going to choose names based on what they sound like, if that is the only criteria that they are looking at, then they should try to make them sound different, instead of having them all sound the same. As I said in my earlier post, some repetition is inevitable - but when almost a quarter of the Galactic Regions end up sounding like other regions, then they stop sounding cool, and start to sound... repetitive.

But I repeat myself :D

Screw this, I'm sticking to EDSM names and I refuse any other reality. Person who build a ship does not name discoveries that are done by ship crew. So no IT'S NOT THEIR GAME! It's OUR GAME! #communism

Holy cow, we really are getting all the complaints from beta forum rehashed in the DD one. Sometimes, folks, the answer is just no.

Did Wagar's Reach make it in?

Nope - although to be fair, Wagar's Reach was only ever a small area on the Outer Arm, and the region where it was is now called 'Outer Arm', so there's that...

The Community names that made it through were:

The Abyss
Hawking's Gap (now a part of the Sagittarius-Carina Arm, not really a Gap at all)
The Norma Expanse (now a part of the Scutum-Centaurus Arm, not really an Expanse)
The Formidine Rift (but the Formidine Rift settlements lie outside the boundary of this region)
Tenebris (now called Tenebrae, but that's close enough)
The Dryman Ridge (now called Dryman's Point, but Dryman Ridge leads to it, so it's okay)
The Orio-Persean Conflux (now called the Orion-Perseus Conflux, and split into two parts, the Inner Orion-Perseus Conflux, and the Outer Orion-Perseus Conflux)

There are also several real-world astronomical names that were used by the Community, which Frontier have also used:

The Orion Spur (now split into two parts, the Inner Orion Spur, and the Outer Orion Spur)
Scutum-Centaurus Arm (now split into two parts, the Inner, and the Outer)
Sagittarius-Carina Arm (but the region so-named is not arm-shaped at all!)
Norma Arm (but the region so-named is barely even part of the actual Norma Arm itself)
Orion-Cygnus Arm
Perseus Arm
Outer Arm
...and I suppose the Galactic Bar (now called the Galactic Centre)

So in total, 15 of the names from the Galactic Mapping Project appear on the 3.3 Galaxy Map in some form or another, spread across 18 of the 42 regions. It's a lot better than nothing... but it's not as good as it could have been, which is what motivated me to start this thread!
