The Navy Rank System- Some Simple Ideas from a Simple Commander.

In my time playing elite dangerous, I have come to realize; as many of us have, that the navy rank system is… not all it’s cracked up to be, to say the least. As players we spend all this time and effort to unlock a few ships, a couple of systems, and finally a title with no significance. Saddened by this knowledge, I got to thinking about what could be done with a mechanic that has such potential? While on my way to work I pondered the matter and came up with a few ideas that might be pretty sweet. After sharing these ideas with some friends, I was encouraged to share them with the community and hopefully the active developers in the forums.

Please note this is not a post that will crap all over game mechanics, people have already done that. All I offer here are some ideas that I felt were worthy of sharing with a dedicated group of people who want to see this game feature life up to its full potential.

To the community, I am curious to know what you think of the following ideas. Weather you love it, hate it, or could care less, let the discussion begin.

To the Developers, I’m sure you see a ton of posts from people offering ideas or making demands about what they want changed. But like I said, I hope these are worthy enough to at least grab your attention.

Now then,
It seems to me that a navy rank, with no authority isn’t much of a rank at all. That being said, if someone is willing to put in the effort of grinding through 14 ranks of the federal or imperial navy, they should be given some sort of authority. My idea is this, beginning at the 9th rank, players will begin to unlock the ability to command AI ships, with the idea being as players obtain higher navy ranks, they will have the ability to command more and bigger ships. These ships would be recruitable from a faction recruiting pool that spans across all three platforms and would drain or replenish over time according to player demands and other in game factors.
As an admiral or king, players would be given the ability to perform duties like convoy and escort missions, system security patrols, and of course larger scale battles. But as a fleet commander, players will have to make more critical decisions in terms of how they deploy the ships under their command as well as their personal roll in a battle.
Additionally, as a rank 14 admiral or king, players would also earn a reputation with their faction leader that could yield big rewards (new powerful modules/ weapons, higher commends limits, something to do with mega ships, etc.) or possible consequences for the player if he/ she does not fulfill the demands of the leader. One possibility could be that as a king or admiral, a player could be awarded a special document (lets call it a letter of marquee) that allows a player to conscript system security forces in times of war or in emergency situations. This idea hasn’t been fully fleshed out yet, but it’s a start.
To conclude, I feel that these ideas my fit nicely into the game at the present time, considering that it offers some potential life into the navy rank system, the recent upswing in thargoid activity, their possible implementation in power play (maybe?). I have said my piece, now I leave it in the hands of the community. Thank you for making it to the end, I hope you like what you have read.

It's auxiliary rank. It's a public award for service, of course there's no authority.

^^ This.

You're as much an Admiral / King as Kanye West is a Doctor :D

If you want it to be an actual military rank that comes with authority, then you'll have to be prepared to follow orders and sacrifice your status as an independent, free-wheeling commander.

Yeah, it's auxiliary or honorary rank. You get some little perks and perhaps to wear a fancy uniform in social occasions, but not any real authority. I think the naming of the ranks could reflect this fact better. The Imperial ranks could have cool latin names inspired by ancient Rome that generally have the word auxilia in them or something in that vein.

Still though, the mission ideas were not bad, patrol way points, answering different calls etc, even it if its just auxiliary ranks. More mission diversity that plays to the ranks is not a bad idea. PErsonally id like to see all the power play modules that are fed and imp to be unlocked by these ranks as well.

The rank of "Admiral" awarded by the Federation or "King" awarded by the Empire has about as much significance as the rank of "Commodore" awarded by your local yacht club. o7

Especially since you can have booth... which is kind of ludicrous as this´d mean some NATO General´d serve in the Warsaw Pact army.

I like the OP’s ideas about making ranks matter with the superpowers. But honorary ranks should remain, “real” ranks should require essentially pledging to a superpower and you would have to resign your commission if you want to join a different superpower. The Alliance doesn’t have an honorary rank but it should have a real military rank, that would require joining and pledging to an Alliance faction. Then you’d be recognized as a military member of the Alliance by any Alliance faction.

But I do like the idea of making ranks matter and having specific missions and activities for that career path. No one would be required to get a military rank and I don’t think there should be locked things like ship access behind the military rank. The honorary rank already has that.

Some special missions for players with high auxiliary ranks would be cool. Similar missions could also go to players who rate highly with a 'power' or maybe even a minor faction with significant territory. I wouldn't add true military ranks, personally, as that just doesn't seem to fit with elite.

Another nice way for these auxiliary ranks to effect play would be for your reputation to precede you when you show up in a combat zone. Like 'beta wing, that's admiral Jameson, watch his back and he could swing this for us.'
