The new C&P puts off some new players

Copied from a Reddit thread:

“Three friends of mine bought the game 3.0 and two are thinking to drop it because of C&P... we need at least 5000 Cr. of forbearance (i.e. only fines).

...we all know, it has been hard to learn how to fly/land/take off our lil sidewinder in Eravate. How many times we hit the wrong ship or got rammed by the T9 passing by the mail slot?
I've convinced a bunch of friends to play the game but they became quickly upset by the new C&P and they got bounties unpayable because factors were out of bounds, or have been blown up for a 600Cr bounty.
Solution: pls. introduce a very base forbearance or franchise calculated on a Cr. amount (i.e. 5000Cr.). All bounties until that threshold is reached should be considered as FINES only and payable at the relevant auth contact. They may become bounties (as current C&P enrolls) only if the consolidated amount of all bounties is higher than the threshold.”

This really sucks that new players are being put off and even thinking of leaving the game already because of the unyielding C&P System.

Elite DANGEROUS strikes again!

Yea, the new C&P has put off a lot of old heads too. Pretty silly to get a tiny bounty and have to spend time running around to an IF and clearing a few hundred credits. We all know it's intended to make us "think about our path ahead before taking action", but considering some of the tiny bounties that get put on you for mundane reasons. The level for moving from fines to bounties seems extremely low at this point. I've never even gotten a bounty, but it bothers me that the system is set up the way it is right now.

this new "simpler, easier to understand" C&P system sure is complicated!

good thing this game doesn't rely on attracting new players to stay in business.

Thanks for the copy - I wouldn't read reddit if it were the only site on the internet.

Oddly, there are Tutorials that help with all that getting in and out of stations....

But I get where you're coming from - the new draconian system is a bit too draconian, even for the Draconians.

"We kill the entire bloodline of our criminals, and this new system is too harsh for our tastes."

Right from the Draconian's mouth.

You get fine -> anymous protocol -> pay fine and you are good to go.

You get assault bounty (too much of accidental fire) -> IR at nearest lows security or anarchy -> pay bounty and you are good to go.

You get murder bounty -> 2 hours per killed ship -> after time ticks out go to IR at nearest low security or anarchy -> pay bounty and you are good to go.

In this case newbies got schooled by a bit ignorant player. He seem didn't educated them situational awareness very important in this game.

lol - I admit I never considered noobs going I into legal debt before they even got out of the station :D

That's pretty rich, tbh :D

you're not wrong...I'm just saying if you need to be schooled by another player...and one that actually knows what they're doing at that...something's not right.

Actually - while I haven't found the new C&P all that punishing - why not?

Why not have it that if your bounty is under 1000 credits, it can be treated in the same way as a fine (it's not a fine, it still has to be a bounty and make you wanted) and paid off at the local station under anonymous access? Bounties over 1000 credits require a visit to IF, and notoriety still makes it impossible to pay off those more serious bounties until it decays to zero.

Visiting an IF still gives you the advantage that you can pay off bounties and fines from any jurisdiction, but for those who are getting small accidental bounties for whatever (yes, we can all say 'git gud', I mean it doesn't seem to happen to me, so - but it's supposed to be a game, fun to play), then they can simply go to the closest station, dock using anonymous access, pay off their transgression and get back to playing the game.

Personally I cannot see any downside to this, other than not having to traipse to an IF, which is really just a time sink.

One thing that can be improved is having IF somewhere close to newbie systems. And having a tip if you have screwed up to inform you about paying bounties at IF.

It's been a long time - what do you actually have to do to get a bounty when you're in a stock Sidewinder? And what happens if you do?

  • ram someone without any major damage while going over 100 m/s? Shouldn't give a bounty.
  • ram someone with major damage/death while going over 100 m/s? We're talking about a stock Sidey, only way this is going to happen is if it's against another stock Sidey.
  • shoot the station? Ok, that's a no go - but that would have killed you instantly, even in the old system.
  • shoot some other ship? Again, while in the no fire zone, you're dead either way.
  • shoot some other ship outside the no fire zone? Only if it's another Sidey - and yes, then you're committing a crime.

And what happens? In the old system, local security (or the station itself) would have killed you instantly. You'd have respawned in a new stock sidey, possibly even on your original pad.
In the new system, I'm surprised to read that you can survive in a stock Sidey long enough to actually realize you got a bounty - as in the old system, security and/or the station should kill you basically on the spot. You respawn in another stock sidey, this time possibly in a detention center.

On the contrary - in difference to the old system, reckless weapons discharge doesn't (shouldn't) automaticlly give you a bounty. Especially not if you're using the default softair guns on the stock Sidey.

In any case, you lose exactly nothing by doing a clear save (start menu, bottom option).

But just out of interest: what did your friends exactly do in order to get a bounty in their starter Sidey, and how did they manage to survive long enough to realize that they can't pay it back at their starter station?

And yes, ED has a brick wall for a learning curve. That has offended many a starter player in the past, and most likely will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. But we also have a comfortable Newcomer's Forum for offline help, and the Galactic Academy discord for realtime help, so if you/they are willing to give it a try, there are people out there to help them along.

yes, I suggested this in the beta.....when you get in trouble you should get a message explaining to you what happened, what it means, how you can fix it, and how you can avoid it next time if you'd like to avoid it.

mostly I just got mocking and snark for suggesting it. par for the course on the official forums I suppose.

Thing is, there is this environment, available to everyone, new and old, where you can do anything you desire (with some limitations) and absolutely no consequences on your actual game. It's a sort of secret game mode that can be activated from the main menu - it's called Tutorials.

You can learn to fly, learn to shoot, learn to fly and shoot at the same time, and even deviate from the tutorial entirely in some instances (I happen to really like the Docking Tutorial mission myself) blow something up, get blown up by something, and nothing bad will happen to you.

I mention the Docking Tutorial, as I use this one regularly to test out things like changes to my controls, or "What if I did..." experiments that I know would get me wanted, get me shot, or otherwise make my life miserable in the actual game.
