According to the patch notes, we are supposed to get a 'graduation mission' to leave the area once we get a rank in either trade, combat or exploration. what rank is it, and where do you get the mission from?

You should get this mission automatically when you first log into the game.
From what I've heard there seems to be an issue with it, post-update. Para Handy (great poster, here) made a video about how it should look but says it took him several tries (clear save - reload) to actually get the mission.
So you can try that or simply carry on and find other missions on the mission board.

Any rank at all from the Pilot's Federation (which is your ranks in Trade, Exploration, and Combat). You start as Penniless, Aimless, and Harmless in each of those respectively. Once you get a single rank in any one of those categories, you can graduate.
I'm not sure where you get the mission from, but I would think they send a mail telling you. They will send a mail telling you that you got the rank, that I know for sure.

thanks for the reply, however that is the intro mission he is talking about. I actually had and completed that. This 'graduation' mission is supposed to appear after you gain a rank in either combat, trade or exploration, which i am assuming sends you out of the beginners area. Thats the mission I'm trying to get.

I didn't seem to have received it since I've gone up a couple of ranks in trade already. i received the rank increase mail, but no mission mail.

Did you try relogging to see if it shows up? There are other things in the game that don't properly unlock/show up unless you relog (like some of the engineer unlocks, etc.). Other than that, I'd check back at the station where you started, maybe the main faction there has the mission waiting for you in the mission board.
yeah, I've tried relogging without success. I've also tried going back to the first station, and then the station you are sent too in the first mission, and that hasn't worked either.
I am a seasoned PS4 CMDR and I have been trying the ‘new CMDR experience’ on a third account - my trade rank has gone up 1 level and I have found a mission which says ‘go exploring’ gives a destination out of the pilots federation area with a 250,000 Cr reward. Not sure which station it was at.
I guess this is only worth taking when you are happy to leave as once you dock and receive the 250,000 your permit will be revoked and you won’t be able to get back in.

I don't know where you heard that from but I have done several Noobzone "tours" and never saw such a thing and I gained trading ranks every time (up to dealer).
What they do though is offer you a 250,000 credit "exploration" mission - basically a bribe to get you to fly out of the zone.
