The new space graphic looks TERRIBLE... what did you do to PAs and Thermal Conduit???

Some players (like me and my kids who play ED as well) believe that Odyssey didn't improve the game graphic/lights in space... the contrary.

I am not going to discuss about technicalities, etc. as I believe images (taken on same hardware with same settings) can speak on their own.

Odyssey v9.01, the two PAs with big yellow/red balls are Thermal Conduit ones, the two PAs without TC are barely visible. More over, there's smear and scratch around the cockpit lights, this issue has been already reported somewhere else on this sub, I confirm this comes out when heat goes above 55%-60%.

Same ship and PAs on Horizons, no smear/scratches...PAs amost blinding with TC (took two images to show them better without PAs).

Also notice how the colours on PAs are visible:

It does remember me a common case in movie history... the first one is (almost always) better than the sequels.

Turns out it's "medium" and "high":

They reduced the glare scale, but increased the max threshold a thousand fold, which I thought was suspicious, but ignored as I use ultra.

So if you have bloom enabled, try ultra, or add a line to your override to set the max threshold back to 200 or so.

I've always had it turned down to Medium because it was so washed out and soap opera wax lense-y on High, but Update 9 indeed made it as pronounced as on High with the added benefit of what seems like a lower resolution(?) and a neat resulting flicker effect. I've completely turned off Bloom now instead.

The pass count is the main difference between the medium and high presets now, which is the 'resolution' you're noticing.

If you liked medium before, those values in that screenshot are from an unedited U8 config.

Ultra, seems colours are a bit better... everything else looks worse:

Lens Flare is the other setting that influences PA/weapons glow. It's part of FX quality, though can be manually adjusted separately. A while back I had lens flare off, until I realized it was making PA balls invisible...which made them rather hard to dodge in PvP.

Is that setting under the video card driver? I couldn't find it under the EDO settings... under FX I have "high" setup.

The "FX" preset controls: light cones, lens flares, debris, particles, trails, beams, and fog.

You can manipulate them individually in the game's config files, if you find an FX preset that makes PAs look acceptable and want to keep that lens flare setting without changing all the others.

Gotcha, but setting it to "high" should allow them all to be displayed... I've noticed I've "stars jet cones" set to medium, but that shouldn't affect the PAs and other hardpoints visual effects. Also "volumetric" is set to high, but ship smoke trails are (and have been) always barely noticeable in EDO.

Are you using medium bloom settings by any chance?

I noticed with 4.0.0.1000 (U9) that they radically increased some of the values in that preset.
Yep, I turned off bloom altogether because you can see hundreds of indivual white pixels around the ship interior lights, and stars.
Like someone went bananas with a pixel spray gun. (Playing at 3840x1600)

It used to be satisfying to fire TC plasma. Now it looks like tiny flat bullet blobs from some top down arcade shooter from the early 1990s. One of a number of downgrades.

Dev team 2021 changes elements which aren’t broken and in the process neglects broken elements which have needed attention for literally years.
