So there I was, warping around lowsec in an artillery-fit Thrasher, mostly minding other people's business because I had a Drop addiction to feed. I came across a Retriever mining an asteroid - perfect. I was so close to a three week Drop bender, I could taste it. I was just about to send the ransom request when all the sudden a small fleet showed up. It's fine, my clone was up to date. However, when I woke up, I was not in the Caldari station I had a clone contract with.
I woke up in a fighter, sitting on the docking pad of a station. I was beginning to wonder if I had somehow screwed something up on the contract when I noticed the distinct lack of that singed hair smell, which usually came with waking up in a new clone. Then it slowly dawned on me - my neural interface wasn't there! I began to panic, and somehow someway hit a button on the manual interfaces in front of me, and a voice notified me that I was preparing to launch. I stopped and took a deep breath - panic gets you dead, and I had not idea how I was going to come back from this one. I decided to figure out my newly re-found mortality later, as the engines of the fighter spun up.
After a few bumps and scrapes against the control tower, much to its occupants' dismay, I was actually in space. I flew like a drunken dragonfly as I put some distance between myself and the station before allowing the flight assist computer stop my relative velocity. I caught my breath and calmed my nerves. I then realized two things very abruptly. 1) This wasn't New Eden - the stars were all wrong. 2) I was going to have to learn how to pilot a ship the old fashioned way, and in a hurry.
I rectified both problems in a matter of a few hours. A message window appeared on my left, which had a galaxy map. That quickly led me to find out where I was - my ancestral home, the Milky Way. The console on my right showed my fighter, a Sidewinder. Another thing I quickly learned was that I was broke. Unfortunately, when I attempted to close this console, I hit the wrong button and the fighter screamed forward. It was startling, but I was far enough away from the station that I wasn't in any danger. The flight assist quickly brought my speed back under control. Making a mental note that those two buttons were dangerously close together, I spent some time learning how to actually fly, since I could no longer just will the ship to do what I wanted. After about an hour of practice and swapping out what looked like a plastic mouse for a flight stick, I was able to move the ship in a predictable way.
I took off, using something called a Frame Shift to get around the system. It was wonderful! No longer was I bound to a set destination - I could literally go anywhere I wanted! I picked a nav point and flew to it, and after overshooting it, I came out of super cruise.
I was beginning to wonder how I was going to make some money when a ship flew past me. Immediately my sensor display started showing information about the ship - Deadly, Wanted, was a clear indicator that somehow, this man was going to put food in my belly and fuel in my ship. I deployed my hardpoints and after a long, grueling, and awesome battle, my ship's computer generated a voucher for a little over 10k. It was ten times what I started with, so I made it back to the station and redeemed it for cash. I took a look at the local market to see what 11k would get me and realized that I was still actually broke. At least I could make some repairs and refuel.
I entered super cruise once again, and just flew around for a little while, pondering the possibilities this new lift presented. Should I go back to my old ways? I know I once swore that the pirate's life was the only life for me, but here I am being presented with a completely fresh start. I could continue hunting bounties, but 10k a pop doesn't seem very lucrative. Trading maybe? Mining!? Ha! I was musing with the prospect of drilling into a mineral laden asteroid when a curious signal displayed on my HUD. I slowed my super cruise and eventually dropped out in the wake of a small fleet.
My sensor started its work.. Deadly, Wanted; Master, Wanted; Master, Wanted; Novice, Wanted... Pirates! I was saved! I opened comms, but before I could say a word, hardpoints deployed and they began to turn toward me. Nope! Nopenopenopenopenope! I skip-scotched my butt out of there before I could find out if they might have been just kidding.
So hi. That was my first day in ED. So far, it's been pretty great! It's still got that new-game smell! Obviously, I came from Eve, having done and witnessed a lot of really great things, and then the gradual downfall of what I feel was once a great game. In any case, here I am. Please direct me to the nearest space-saloon and poker table!
