General / Off-Topic The next 4K PS4 Pro showcase or over hyped... (God of War)

I'm reminded of that scene in the movie "Pearl Harbor" were Roosevelt tells his admirals and generals, "Do not tell me it can't be done!"

First party developers, they usually do Sony proud. It shows just how far modest hardware can be pushed. First impressions of the graphical prowess of GoW look very good in comparison to the likes of HZD, although pop in and motion blur seem quite heavy compared to HZD, the still shots or slow movement detail looks incredible. Just how good a game it is, well we shall see and I will be interested to see DF get their hands on the game.

Did you play the original GoW? I'm curious about the game itself. I enjoy games like HZD, Skyrim, and Uncharted, but I don't like ultra-violent games like 'The Last Of Us' and 'Far Cry 5'. I can headshot players in Overwatch all day, and that doesn't bother me any more than watching Daffy Duck get blown up as a kid. However, realistic portrayals of severed limbs and gushing blood is not my cup of tea (and let's just leave it at that).

From the videos I've seen, it appears that GoW has the player fighting monsters with orange "blood", and I didn't notice anything that crossed that line of hyper-realistic violence against humans. So in your opinion, is GoW closer to HZD or Far Cry 5 in this regard?

It is hyper-violent but looks fantastical and stylised rather than realistic. It's also a very impressive 3840x2160 checkerboard resolution on Pro which looks very, very polished.

I will still wait for the price to come down, once again it shows what a first party studio is capable of.

Heh. Even Paige liked it.

Hey @OneOldDuck maybe we need to ask Cory now that the Santa Monica team are finished with GoW. Could they maybe do some freelance work on Elite Dangerous #PS4 Cobra graphics engine for @frontierdev ?

Updated: I bought this yesterday, coming on Friday due to it being discounted for delivery after a certain date, so no doubt once I see this in all its 4K HDR glory it will just upset me about Elite again. :D

There is still a chance that we'll get these features in Elite. I just saw an article at some gaming site about how JWE offers 4K HDR for the PS4 Pro. The Q4 update is going to require some major "under the hood" changes to Elite's graphic engine (changing the lighting model is no small feat), so it is possible if not likely that Frontier will replace ED's older graphics tech with the newer, better stuff they created for JWE. If I were still a software developer juggling multiple projects, that's how I would have done it. Hopefully they will fix my crappy shadows in the process ;)

I do ask that Frontier give us the options found in other games like Tomb Raider. I want the ability to choose between 4K, performance 1080p, and enhanced 1080p, the latter being the one I would use the most.

Can you link the article which quotes JWE and 4K on the Pro please? I had heard it was confirmed on the X but not Pro. Will check the JWE forums.

It was in my iPad News App, but it was recent, so I should be able to find it again. If I do I'll post a link to Twitter via the Share function.

Cool thanks, I had a quick look and I could only find Xbox One X confirmation.

Wow, needs to be said, this game has amazing graphics, the definitely pinnacle of 4K/HDR on the PS4 Pro today.... Its a pretty solid game too although I am dying way more than I thought I would be. LOL

I just watched Sony's E3 presentation, and "wow" seems to be a growing theme in PS4 titles. I'm not a fan of hyper-realistic violence in games like "Last Of Us 2" (I'm more of a Spiderman guy), but the graphics in all these new games are just breathtaking - even the shadows look great! ;)

Yeh, the last of us, I never actually finished the first one, its one of those games which just didn't really click with me even though everyone raved about it. Shadows in GoW are amazing. :)

Last of Us 2 looked insane graphically. Shows what can be done on a dedicated gaming console.

Really thinking of getting a PS4 to play some of these immense looking games.

Just finished God of War, amazing game, and amazing graphics, especially in 4K with HDR, particle effects are some of the best I have seen on PlayStation.

Great story and ending too, although the Platinum has hard for me due to the Valkyrie Queen (optional fight) which taught me it was a good idea not to play Dark Souls or Bloodborne as this one fight alone nearly killed me. Took me way too many attempts to beat her and I am sure she is nothing compared to Dark Souls/Bloodborne bosses!
