The next Elite

It's also worth bearing in mind that Frontier rarely delivers anything on time for Elite Dangerous. If they had a 10-year plan back in 2012, we might see it completed in 2027.

As far as a "next Elite" goes.
- I think it's very likely that there will be an Elite V
- It's not going to happen while Elite Dangerous is still running (even in feature-freeze), which is going to be for several years yet
- I wouldn't expect the gap between ED closing and Elite V releasing to be as long as the gap between FFE and Elite Dangerous ... but it'll probably be pretty close
- What a game coming out maybe in 2035 at the earliest looks like? Who knows.

The most interesting question is probably whether Elite V would also be an MMO (in the loose sense).
I dunno I think these days they'd just keep ED on life support whilst developing Elite V, however even if they dumped what they currently have with current technology and the likely development budget can they iterate the Elite francise to the next level? I don't think they can just yet, I do think that by tinkering with what they currently have they can gather a lot of data and figure out what is working and what isn't. IMO BGS is fantastic but is too shallow with some love and giving squadrons more control over it they could make it a real end game option. Seems to me apart from a small but vocal minority powerplay in its current form is a bit of a fail, most just tolerate it to get the rewards and once they are done either ignore it to pledge to a faction that gives passive benefits. I'm not saying they shouldn't do powerplay again just it would need some serious consideration as to how to make it more popular, personally I'd give it more teeth integrate it in with BGS and superpower pledges(I'd seriously consider making it so people can only be pledged to one superpower at a time).

That's exactly why I don't think work on Elite V will start until ED is long dead. So long as it's running, it'll almost always be easier (not easy!) to add a new feature to it than it will be to produce an entirely new game with all of ED's features plus an extra one.

Similarly if they develop Elite V but release it without half the features of the already playable / just closed Elite IV, that's hardly going to invite positive comparisons.

Elite Dangerous is the last (so far) in a long line of Elites since the BBC to have graced our monitors.
While Elite Dangerous is in it's twilight years that doesn't necessarily mean it's the end of the road for the story.
I wonder if there are any ideas on how the game could be reworked, redesigned from the base up?
Same lore. New ideas, new game play?

There is also the problem on how Elite Dangerous will survive in history as all the others have one way or another?
An offline single player version perhaps?

I'm now off to iron my Distant Worlds patches.
You should probably read the latest news / development update the game isn't in its twilight years. Mods can you please close this thread?

Any new Elite would not be 'just copy ED, but more'. They would almost certainly revisit basics of the game:

  • why do a full scale galaxy again? It's been done already. Maybe smaller area, add new areas in DLC
  • why design lots of ships? That would takes ages, especially with interiors. Just let people design & paint their own
  • base building as part of the fundamentals
  • Solo / Open. I think with the knowledge they have from building ED they might approach that differently

Just look at the UI changes between EDH and EDO - that's a new team saying 'we have our own ideas' and going their own way - any new Elite would be like that on steroids. Which would be fun, but not what a lot think when they ask for a 'new' Elite 🤷‍♀️

Remove the ability to manipulate the BGS and no PP equivalent and the 2 modes would just be personal choice. (which the 3 are currently, but there are some who consider not having a single mode provides an advantage to others... Take away the bone of contention)

I would like Frontier to buy out Egosoft and have them bring over some of the Ideas from the X series

Well there is really only three concepts Frontier needs to grasp from Egosoft and that is :
1. you need to expand your space sim with proper substance, depth and quality in order to be successful doing 'just enough/MVP or bare minimum' won't cut it.
2. focus on the quality and experience of the game not chasing the $$$ players are attracted to good quality, happy players will buy your stuffz
3. Egosoft to their credit realised ivory tower development/one-way comms got them into all sorts of mess with their customers and have corrected that

I think the next Elite, if there is one, will be a single-player version, possibly with online "dongle". It's the formula which has always worked, whereas the whole multi-player thing is the source of most of the present game's problems.

I say this as someone who quite likes the present single-player plus turn-based multi-player hybrid, but I don't think it's been successful enough to be repeated, and a fully-online real-time game isn't going to work over the internet.

Can they replicate the Stellar Forge without the people that originally made it ?

Because that's the true core of Elite Dangerous, and if they want to make another Elite game ( without making a game that's completely another kind of experience ) they need it.

Frontier doesn't need to buy Egosoft to borrow ideas from them. I'm pretty sure broad concepts like persistent NPCs and more realistic economy are not patent protected.

Though I'd be just as happy if X had Elite's graphics, power management system, flight AI and "weighty" flight model, and a couple of other things. I don't think one game can replace the other, as they are very different in many regards (particularly how X handles FTL compared to Elite).
