The no name-and-shame rule!

The simple solution is to create a website yourself, populate this information with what you want and link to it in your signature. I'm not sure if that constitutes breaking any forum rules as FD have no control over what you do away from their forums.

But they do control your signature.

Without pre-defining what is meant by "griefing" and concrete proof of said actions all you're doing is spreading rumours.

Best thing to do right now is just log off - wait a short period of time - and try later.

Come release - ignore them.

Nuff said.

I have read through this thread and find a lot of valuable discussion, and some worrying comments about creating hate websites.

I would expect that any such trolling or even well meaning griefers lists could end up the creators facing some kind of retaliation.

That's why naming and shaming doesn't work and shouldn't be permitted.

It create's wars, it creates infamy and who doesn't love a bit of infamy.

So the best course of action against griefers is to ignore them in game and hey presto its fun again.

the Griefer then finds themselves with noone to grief.

Please be aware though that the name and shame rule is implemented here, whether you agree with it or not, if you ignore it you could find yourself facing the repercussions.

I played devils advocate in a similar post a few days ago and it caused quite the heated debate......

It is obviously annoying for people (currently i havent lost anything worth a great deal to idiots).

I guess the only way to approach this is to admit that the game is still a beta, plenty of water has sill to go under the bridge. Also i suspect a lot of new backers are probably just testing out shooting stuff on the first ship they see.

Personally i have had a few "gentlemanly agreements with other players" where we have practised some combat on each other leaving the other guy with 50% or so to leave and get patched up. Risky unless you know the guy but it is good practise at shooting real people.

I guess when we can finally communicate with each other it may be better..........until then.

It still a beta..............

I wish people wouldn't do that.

i Do not mean to cause offence i love this game.

But i think people must be left to choose their own path. penalty's for pure murder must be harsh in the final game. Hopefully this will prevent idiots from bullying.

On the other hand naming people is a slippery path. I hope the game finds its own path without too much regulation.

From what i have read Frontier will hit the sweet spot

I have played enough rounds of DayZ to know the human psychology behind this type of game.

MP is going to be DayZ in Space

Is that fear justified though?
DayZ did not have police and military patrolling many of the systems.
It did not have a bounty system.
And its universe was 'somewhat' smaller.
And stuff like that.

So perhaps in Elite it will play out very differently.

No name No shame rule

I agree with the no name no shame rule.

The game when its released will have a number of levels set in to balance out players actions.
e.g. If someone is attacking 'clean' players they will get a bounty put on them. As the bounty increases so will the interest they get from police and bounty hunters etc.

400 bill star system? Big place to move around so your not likely to keep running into the same commander. Dont moan, whine or feel sorry for yourself (thats why its called Dangerous) just enjoy the game & find a way to become Elite.

It raises another little issue..

The newsfeed will no doubt list the top bounty's and acts of piracy?

Is this naming and shaming, OR as I think it is, In context role play within the universe breeding gameplay.

I think it is the right place to really pick the best of the best and the worst of the worst.. without people jumping in with loads of insulting comments.

No to name and shame. Too much room for abuse for very little benefit.

I guarantee that if someone makes EDGriefers.com, there will be entire clans of pirate players fighting to reach the top spot on that very site, so it will become a self-defeating site. What true griefers most value are the tears of their targets, the more public the better; in-game personal hatemail is worth a fraction of what a public forum post is.

If you get named on a newsfeed then you will have been naughty. People at present may name an innocent party. This seems fair to me.

As much as I dislike griefers and as much as they sometimes make me wanna yell at them, I am against forum/website name/shame just because it would allow too much vitriol onto these very forums. I don't want to picture this place once the game goes live and there would be no name&shame policy *shudders at the though*

If name/shame should ever be allowed then it should be done properly in-game, controlled by FD, so it is part of an immersive gameplay element that serves both sides and playstyles.

Whatever is done, we will never be safe from some of those people that just want to cause trouble for their own entertainment, but at least we should not give them too much limelight, unless there is a gun pointed at them from behind the curtain

I do not think this should be seen as naming and shaming.
The newsfeed will indiscriminately report sightings of people/npc with bounties on their head without actually judging them to be griefers.

You can get a bounty on your head just by playing the pirate in a very 'legit' and playful way. And part of playing that role is the excitement of getting police and bounty hunters after you. That is all part of the game.

Known griefers will also be featured in those newsfeeds, but not because they are labeled griefers, but because they have big bounties on their head.

If people consider some of those human bandits to be griefers, then they can use this newsfeed system to track them like a real bounty hunter would. The only difference might be that some bounty hunters might put considerably more effort in tracking someone who is considered a griefer. It is an extra motivation so to speak. They might not even really care about the bounty itself. :)

Agreed! What we need is the in game equivalent of a judge Dredd to declare "I am the Law" and start dispensing a little justice in a manner that will be clearly understood by those who choose to ignore things like the station no fire zones.
:D

Is the opposite of a name and shame allowed?

I'm also backing Project Cars currently, and they had a similar issue with griefers on track, so they allowed us to create a "Name the good drivers (pilots in this case) thread.

TBH it really was only useful for the first month or so, as the list got so huge, and some griefers managed to get on it. It did keep the forum quieter and some busy for a while tho while the list was created ;-)

However, as I am unsure where players will start in the final game, there is the possibility that griefers will hang around "starter" systems and cause problems this way.

Also consider multiple Commanders, so their "real" character doesn't get blemished.

Though I guess with the various ways to play (MP, groups, solo), griefers may well find that they are only playing with themselves.:D

This reminds me of that Battlestar galactica episode where they had this cylon who was a crack pilot because he kept on dying and learning how to be better. At the end he was near unstoppable.

Scar!

Wait... you're saying that bad people in space might try to kill me and take my stuff? and also that they might do it again if I come back?? WHAT is the universe coming to??

That's it devs. Shut it down... Shut it all down.
