the "nothing to do in this game" club members please consider this point of view

i hear alot of complaints about the lacking in things to do in elite.
so i just want to get this in the perspective of another game. anybody remember the need for speed games? well if you for some reason never played those games, i will simply say that it was a "racing" game; you race cars, you can only be inside cars and that was about it.
some times you ran away from cops. but that was seriously what the game was made up of. yet for some reason i never seen anyone get mad that they paid for need for speed and didnt get to deliver anything, nor do i remember anyone getting mad that the trading of the game was lacking, and if im correct you couldnt even mine in that game!
yet people seemed to buy need for speed over and over....and never did any of the edition come out with anything different then racing and customization.

now elite dangerous with out the expansion packs is just a space flight sim. so you can fight, you can explore, you can trade, you can mine, you can be a bounty hunter (technically thats just fighting) now thats what really comes to the top of my head i may have missed something but thats about it.....
yep correct. what else are you going to do? because if you do have some useful ideas that are not in the category of fighting, trading, or mining please share.
but until planetary landings and ship interiors come i would suggest getting used to this because saying that elite dangerous has nothing to do is just bull. because if elite dangerous is in the wrong then so is need for speed, euro truck sim, motocross, midnight club, flight simulator, war thunder, some tony hawk games that only had skating. basically any game that concentrates on a subject and has a repetitive gaming mechanic

yes i do know that it was a random gaming list but you guys get the point lol:D

Can you watch Netflix while racing in Need for Speed?
...
Elite: Dangerous is the only game forum that I have seen (I don't play a lot of games so there are more I am sure) where people start threads about what they do to stop the boredom while playing. From watching movies/TV shows to reading books and playing other games, posting on forums etc etc etc......
.
The point is, the "driving from a - b in a racing game, is fun............Super cruising to Space Station number 10,457 for the 500th time to trade fish for politics, is not fun, and people get so bored they do other things while "playing" the game.....(or as I suspect in most cases, just stop playing after after a few weeks....)
.
Face it, it's dull......even the combat is at a snails pace. It is more like a game of Top Trumps than space Top Gun........

I play, and have played online games for ages. E: D is certainly not the only game where that goes on. Any game you play is as rewarding as you make it.

yes in chess, there was also plenty of strategy games i can do that with, sim city, even flight simulator since that was just basically a straight flight from airport to airport. also farming simulator i have been doing that.
sometimes i would put on milton friedman videos and drive around with euro truck simulator.
now sure when things get fast paced in combat or being interdicted i gotta get my attention but that can be said about landing the plane, stopping the bus/truck and deciding what move is next.
many games you can do that with :)

also plenty of online games require this sorta thing :)

yes but people still buy it over and over for many years. and EA feels comfortable enough to make that bet again with the new need for speed.
but please enlighten me with your ideas for elite without the expansions :)

I'm not saying Elite is necessarily boring, just pointing out the flaw in your premise in the OP. People have also been buying Elite for many years. But here's a suggestion for improving Elite I posted elsewhere. Depth and complexity. The proposed expansions don't interest me.

Go to the bulletin board and have a mission. "Missing person, help needed." You sign up and are patched through to an NPC who you can ask questions of. You need to visit the last known station visited by the missing person and there you get a new contact. This contact tells you where they were headed next. You go there and discover that they didn't arrive. So you do a few scans and track down the ship, but it is being attacked by pirates! You must fight off the pirates but your target's ship is damaged and you must find some needed modules in one of the nearby systems.

Returning with the modules you transfer them to their ship. and wing up with them to escort them to their destination. Once you arrive safely, after several more interdictions along the way, they entrust you with their secret. They were actually coming to collect a secret, experimental module and the pirates weren't actually pirates but spies from the opposing Power. They ask you to deliver it to the secret research base...

Etc..

There are fantastic elements of E:D split up by immense periods of absolute tedium.

agreed and that can be said about alot of games.
all im asking from people is to provide me with an example of some of this content that is missing that they keep talking about.

i understand that this game is tedious at times but im going to have to assume that will be solved with planetary landings and the other expansions. thats when all these new dimensions of possibilities pop up.
but as of now im not sure what else can be done to here.
this is why star citizen looks like its full of content is cause they have a whole new dimension of walking around. and making the ship a vehicle instead of the avatar.

But the X-games have so many things "you can do"...that you can automate so you don't have to do them! :D

I admit the first X game was so similar to Elite in terms of gameplay I was really comfortable. And then I started owning and running stations. It was fantastic!

Not that I want that here, I'd go play an X game.

I've said many times it's down to the mindset, what people now call Gring in Elite was the mainstay of the gameplay of the first three games.

Not that I disagree with SteveLaw's point about added complexity.

Ship naming, Tier 2 NPCs and Ship's Crew.

may i just point out that all you said was accept mission> travel to station>dialogue> accept mission> travel to point of interest> find ship> fight other ships> dialogue>end mission
now that sounds like a good mission but there are no new ideas just more complex ones of the current ideas. which could be done and im sure would be done soon but there are expansions and other things in the game that they are working on...

Fair enough, glad you are still having fun. I've not played ED for a few months now but still pop by the forums as I find they are more entertaining than the game. Like many who bought the game, I got bored pretty quick. You can only have so much fun in an empty nightclub. 500,000 copies sold, and how many on the servers at peak times, 10k?...............so maybe a few % (being generous) of the people who bought the game are still playing it? Why is that do you think? And do you REALLY think FD can afford to keep developing it for the next 9 years with so few players and payers? Eve went strong for 10 years plus, do you think ED will even make it to 12 months? I have my doubts.
.
The game has weak foundations. The Open/Solo thing is a catch 22 that will wreck the game. The Xbox kids are going to get bored in seconds flat.....the old guard dig in and say it is perfection and won't allow change..........FD have stood on a land mine and they know it..........and they are stuck. If they step off it, in any direction....Boom...........and so, the game is stagnant. "Changes that change nothing"
.
I wonder how many people who bought the game have not yet bothered to "upgrade" to the Power Play patch....I know I haven't.....nothing in there of interest. Just the same things to do over and over and over again, and they are not really fun to do........
.
I was amazed when I first started playing. The Potential is freaking amazing, out of this world...... the programmers and art teams have done a great job. But the design choices. Wow.........
.
Out of interest. I don't know if you ever step outside these forums to read about peoples thoughts on Elite where the moderators are maybe not so....protective.........Maybe you should take a look........
.
A mile wide and an inch deep.........I agree with people that say it is very "Gamey".....it does, it feels like a few very old games I know. RES? Asteroids in 3D....Power Play? Politics, the board game Risk......Exploring, Patience/Solitaire, turn over the card (Horn the system) and see what you got...........Trading? Actually, this is so boring I can't think of a game it compares to...maybe Pong, but played a LOT slower...... :)
.
When I look at Need for Speed of Cod/Battlefield....I don't play them and think, hmm...this reminds me of Snakes and Ladders or Tin Can Alley ...........but I do get that feeling with Elite......it is a very OLD feeling game that holds little excitement.

You guys didn't remember the fact why all of us play this game. Or most of us... By the pleasure of being a commander, watching the beauty of the universe, doing whatever, it desn't matter. For me is an space sim. I enjoy it in essence. Maybe you have to take time thinking if this is your game, because, you need to drop a lot of time on it. Tha'ts all. And of course, there are a lot of work to do.

Maybe NFS has an END GOAL ? ED doesn't have anything like that so it needs to keep me interested to play a sandbox. It has no campaign...
