The Oceania Roster

As an Australian myself, I have been more than thrilled to see the inclusion of more Australian species throughout 2022, with the Wetlands Animal Pack we got the peculiar Platypus, in the Twilight Pack we received the cute Common Wombat, and the latest Grasslands Animal Pack gives us the excitable Emu and the remarkable Red-Necked Wallaby, an inclusion I didn't see coming.
But there are still a few essential species from the Oceania region, this encapsulates Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea as well as several islands and territories. My complete Australian roster isn't too overdone, because I believe each of these animals have unique properties that they can offer to players, especially if particular players are used to certain species rather than others.

The Current Roster:

Common Death Adder (Base Game)
Common Wombat (Twilight Pack)
Dingo (Australia Pack)
Eastern Blue Tongued Skink (Australia Pack)
Eastern Brown Snake (Base Game)
Emu (Grasslands Animal Pack)
Giant Burrowing Cockroach (Base Game)
Koala (Australia Pack)
Platypus (Wetlands Animal Pack)
Red Kangaroo (Australia Pack)
Red Necked Wallaby (Grasslands Animal Pack)
Saltwater Crocodile (Base Game)
Southern Cassowary (Australia Pack)

This roster can further include the following that I think would suit. For Habitats:

Tasmanian Devil
Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo
North Island Brown Kiwi
Short Beaked Echidna
Quokka
Little Penguin
Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby
Western Grey Kangaroo
Perentie
New Zealand Fur Seal or Australian Sea Lion
Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat
Greater Bilby
Numbat
Lace Monitor
Tiger Quoll
Common Brushtail Possum

For Exhibits:

Inland Taipan
Frilled Neck Lizard
Central Bearded Dragon
Thorny Devil
Solomon Island Skink
Tuatara
Lord Howe Island Stick Insect
Giant Weta
Fijian Crested Iguana
New Caledonian Giant Gecko
Pig Nosed Turtle
Maybe the Grey-Headed Flying Fox

Oceania has a lot to offer, and even though many of these are similar to others already in game, it can really flesh out the region.

I personally believe the common brushtail possum would make a good addition. A decently sized possum which could fill the tree climber niche for the continent without the complications of needing a gliding mechanic. I know this animal is considered as a "pest" or mundane and lacks any conservation value, but the mundaneness of this animal could be useful to make a realistic zoo or wildlife rescue.

Being considered mundane or "pests" in NA didnt stop them from putting raccons, red foxes and skunks in the game. So i think they are fair game :)

Oceania/Australia has finally fallen to second place for priorities for me with the Emu and Wallaby additions.

Still feel we need; Tasmanian Devil, a Kiwi and a Tree Kangaroo
I personally would really like to see: Grey Kangaroo and Little Blue Penguin

Anything else beyond that is fantastic but just having those 5 would really feel complete for me personally.

Of course that doesn't take flying avians into account.

Right now, I'd say the Oceania roster is pretty good, but it could use some more additions.
Must haves:
  • Tasmanian Devil
Animals I really want:
  • Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo
  • North Island Brown Kiwi
Animals I would like to have, but could go without:
  • Short-Beaked Echidna
  • Quokka
  • Little Blue Penguin
  • Perentie

I think we could have a better DLC mixing oceania species with 1 or 2 species from Madagascar (Fossa of course and that cool Zoboomafoo's Lemur)
So here's our Island Scenery Pack

New Zealand Fur Seal
NZ fur seal is just one common name for the species Arctocephalus forsteri - a more accurate descriptor of the whole species would actually be "Australasian fur seal", which is why I would favour it over the Australian sea lion; it's both a pinniped we don't have yet (fur seal) and it covers both Australia and New Zealand.

Anyway, for the "Oceanian" roster, there's not much more I'm desperate for.

Must haves:
  • North Island brown kiwi.
  • Tasmanian devil.
  • Little blue penguin.
  • Tuatara (E).
Badly want:
  • Cape Barren goose.
  • Lace monitor.
  • Australasian fur seal.
  • Bearded dragon (E).
  • Shingleback lizard (E).
  • Eastern snake-necked turtle (E).
  • Rainbow lorikeet (WE).
Want but can live without:
  • Brolga.
  • South Island takahe.
  • Australian finches (WE - zebra, gouldian, etc.).
  • NZ parakeets (WE - red-fronted, orange-fronted, Antipodean, etc.).
  • Inland taipan (E).
  • Green and golden bell frog (E).

As a non expert in the field, I thought I knew to distinguish between a seal and a sea lion until I discovered the fur seal. For my little understanding (shape of ears and flippers), it should be named as a sea lion and not a seal 🤣

Well the different between seals and fur seals and sea lions, there are the "True Seals" like the Grey Seal which have no distinct ears, but then you have fur seals and sea lions, the "Eared Seals" like the California Sea Lion.

Those are pretty much my most wanted species and your perspective is actually a good way of looking at it

Wouldnt work the brown fur seal even better then?
Afterall its not only found in australia but also south africa, covering even more space

The roster for international collections is good as it is now, but I'll always be happy for more. Here's my opinion on the list you suggested:

99% chance this will be added:

  • Tasmanian Devil
  • Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo
  • North Island Brown Kiwi

Has a good chance to happen:
  • Short Beaked Echidna
  • Yellow Footed Rock Wallaby
  • Tuatara

Unlikely to be added:
  • Quokka
  • Little Penguin
  • Perentie
  • Numbat
  • Tiger Quoll
  • Flying fox
  • Frilled Neck Lizard
  • Central Bearded Dragon
  • Thorny Devil

Will 99% never going to happen:
  • Western Grey Kangaroo
  • New Zealand Fur Seal or Australian Sea Lion
  • Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat
  • Greater Bilby
  • Lace Monitot
  • Common Brushtail Possum
  • Inland Taipan
  • Solomon Island Skink
  • Lord Howe Island Stick Insect
  • Giant Weta
  • Fijian Crested Iguana
  • New Caledonian Giant Gecko
  • Pig Nosed Turtle

Let's not present opinion as fact. You don't know the odds for any of these animals any better than anyone else does. For example, I could easily argue that the Lord Howe Island stick insect has a better chance of making it in than any other animal on the list, since Frontier presumably already has assets made for it since they went as far as to create scenery reflecting it. Economically it makes more sense to include it somewhere down the line than let that work go to literal waste.

I could also argue that the Eastern grey kangaroo has a much better chance of making it in than any of the top three species, since Frontier does love to make reskins/clones/insert-word-here.

I said right before the list that this is my opinion.
