The Oculus Rift has re-ignited my playing of ED

I was burned out on ED. The lack of content and cookie cutter galaxy had me bored to tears. And I was upset with the developers for failing at making the game engaging. But I have to give them props on the implementation of the Oculus Rift. It really takes this game to the next level. The immersion of sitting in the cockpit and exploring, landing at stations, and fighting in asteroid fields... is nothing short of gaming greatness. So, for all the flack I have given Frontier about design decisions I felt it only fair to praise them for their inclusion and implementation of the Oculus Rift.

Now if they put all those things in the game you see in trailers and that they promised... this game will truly be mind blowing.

I'm in the same place - I love FD's VR implementation and play ED solely because of it. Without VR I wouldn't be bothering due to similar reasons that you weren't playing. ;)

Huh.

The DK2 is about ½ to a full months income for me (I have a crappy job that has irregular hours).

Not gonna indulge in hardware that expensive for a game any time soon.

But it's nice that you can afford it and that it's given you a newfound interest in the game.

It's insanely good to play ED in the rift. It's the scale that does it for me. Things that should be massive ARE massive. When you float over a planet it's awesome. FD have done such a good job with it.

I keep um'ing and ar'ing about getting a DK2. Keep thinking right gonna get one, then get put off by something I read or think I might as well wait for the consumer version or now the new ReVive.

Guess I am worried that a) it won't run so well on my PC. b) After playing it on triple screens at 5860 X 1080 I'll think the resolution general graphics will be meh and c) I'll get one and then a consumer version will be out and I'll end up spending the same about of money over again and not get much for selling the DK2..

Don't think I've ever been so indecisive about anything lol

Rig spec is in my sig.

If you can run triple monitors at that resolution you should have no trouble at all running a Rift. And if you can afford a rig like that you can probably afford it too :) Seriously, once you try it you will consider the few hundred quid you spent well worth it even for the (probably at least six) months fun you get out of it before the CV1 gets here. And you won't care that the DK2 gets left in a cupboard after you get the CV1.

Yes, the resolution in a Rift isn't up to a monitor even running 1080p, and there's the screen door effect to consider. But again, you won't care. Any lack of visual quality is far, far outweighed by the sense of immersion and scale, and the sheer OMFG effect of the Rift. Don't be put off by what you read, most of the negative comments come from people who've never even tried the thing, or from tech types who simply count the numbers and omit to tell you about the quantum leap in gaming realism.

I haven't had such a rush from something new in gaming since I first set up networked Doom on PC. Do it. You know you want to.

Not so flush with cash anymore unfortunately, most of that lot I bought when I was earning a better wage :)

My frame rate is in the 100s in space and in stations can dip to 20 sometimes at that res, I think I'll switch to 1920 x 1080 and see what fps I get. 70+ is the magic number for the rift right?

How is the rift now with the new latest update? Can you read things like the galaxy/system map and commodities markets ok?

See look, you got me looking at ebay now lol ;) It worth ordering from Oculus direct or is Ebay ok? any idea on postage / VAT costs to the UK from the states?

Sorry OP for hijacking your post :)

there is a eu depot now, so people who recently ordered a dk2 directly from occulas had it within days. that way you still have warranty etc

EXACTLY... now you see the light. Now you see why us oculus users are so damn annoying when we keep talking about our experience to the general community. There is no way to describe how AWESOME the experience is, and how amazing this game becomes when you actually get to sit IIINNN your spaceship...

75. But the rift is different. You don't even want 74.... judder in the rift is NOT like an "unsmooth" framerate on a monitor. It literally makes you sick. I could run ED in 1080 on a monitor, with super fluid motion, on my 5 year old single GTX470. But even with a brand new over-clocked GTX970... I can just "get by" in the rift. It is literally double as demanding as any resolution you can run on a monitor. You are running SLI, which is good, but I don't know how powerful those cards are. Having said that.. even running the game on the lowest settings, with low quality shadows turned on.. its still 100x more amazing then ANY monitor setup, at any resolution, at any framerate.

My opinion is buy a dK2 new from oculus as the used ones sell for just about the same price. And you never know how they have been treated. The $400 I spent on my oculus is the single best money I have ever spent for computers and/or gaming in-general.

My T9 keeps on haulin night after night, bringin home the bacon on the same 3 station route. Each time I get to the mail slot my jaw drops open, despite having seen the same mail slot a million times! You even Become accustomed to the local celestial alignments after a while and when a particularly attractive eclipse or lunar pass occurs you can't help but be dumbstruck. It couldn't ever be a grind because it's just too damn beautiful ! :)

Thanks for the info.

Just did a test on 1920 x 1080 and am getting 70-90 fps in stations and 100+ in space with pretty much everything on high/ultra. I'm going to go for it :D If it runs bad or I can't put up with stuttering or the resolution drop I can always sell it on Ebay seeing as they keep their price.

I did bid on a rift on Ebay but it didn't hit the reserve. £350 seems to be the average and £313 is new direct from Oculus. It does say "New orders are expected to ship within 1 to 2 weeks" is that literally how long it usually takes? Not sure if I can wait that long now I have it in my head I'm getting one lol!

There are some bargains on ebay but you have to be lucky / patient. I picked one up for well under 250. I still don't understand why people would pay more for a 2nd hand unit on ebay though. Madness.

If you're only getting 70 in stations on a monitor, that will be like 35 in a rift (a made up number, but it will be somewhere around half). You will certainly be down on low settings.. BUT IT JUST DOESN'T FREAKING MATTER... it will still be worth it. I am not in the UK.. I am in the states...and it took about 12 days total from clicking the order button to picking the package up off my front porch.

I've been on a round-trip route for a few days now between outposts, and sometimes I'll just go fly to a station so I can go through the mailslot and land, and then leave again.. :) It's such an amazing thing in VR. Today a ship was coming out as I was going in, and I almost flew into the station wall because I had my head turned just watching it go by..

I would caution those who are planning on getting a rift to expect to ease yourself into it.. You may get nauseated a bit when going into stations and flipping upside down, etc.. If you do, just do one or two landings a day for a bit, then work your way up to 3-4, etc.. I don't get any judder in station (GTX 980 / i7 4930k) and going from space to a rotating station interior still gets me dizzy sometimes.

Before using the DK2 I ran the game at 7680x1080 resolution... and using the Oculus is FAR better. It is actually so good, that when the final version comes out, it could render multi monitor setups obsolete.. atleast for gaming.

For you DK2 owners.... try Alien Isolation. Wow... so good.

Ok, well you guys sold me on it, got one on order now, direct from Oculus, just hope it doesn't take too long to get here :D

you must come back here when you get it up and running... and give us your impressions after playing for an hour. But take my advice, DONT just "jump right in" to ED... take your time, do all the tricks, run the demos, work out the general kinks before coming into ED. Your world will change, mark my words.
