The Oculus Rift has re-ignited my playing of ED

hehe thanks guys :)

I did get to have a go on the rift very briefly at the launch event after having had a few beers from the free bar but can just about remember it lol Had my mouth open the whole time apparently, I was awestruck then just for the few minutes I played but reckon that will be even more intense now as I am very much obsessed with the game, playing every night with my mates. Really looking forward to just going off and exploring.

you must come back here when you get it up and running... and give us your impressions after playing for an hour. But take my advice, DONT just "jump right in" to ED... take your time, do all the tricks, run the demos, work out the general kinks before coming into ED. Your world will change, mark my words.

Yep will do for sure. I do enjoy modding and tweaking stuff (Programmer by trade) so am fine with spending a day getting it all setup and I don't think I'll be that bothered like you said by the drop on graphics quality VS the immersion factor, if it is as good as you say. I had DCS World running on one GTX 660 on triple screens but had to run it on a fairly low triple screen res with most option low and preferred doing that as oppose to everything high on one screen.

Woohoo! FWIW, I had mine in about a week. Ordered on the evening of March 2nd, and it arrived on March 10.

Awesome, hope I can track it so have an idea when it will arrive as I WILL be having that day off from work lol :D
EDIT - just seen how to track it- "Your order is awaiting inventory before it can be fulfilled. We will notify you when it's about to be shipped." reckon I'll be visiting this page quite frequently lol

I love these threads. Coz Im an unashamed VR fanboy.

ED looks pretty terrible through the DK2. It's such a beauty of a game on a monitor.
I wouldn't change back at all.
I play 100% in the Rift.

It does take some tinkering with to get it looking ok (ish) and theres plenty of good info and peeps on these forums.

I have been exploring for a couple of weeks now, and even with reduced resolution some systems are still jaw droppingly gorgeous.

I can play ED without the DK2, but what I most missing on the Monitor is Headtracking. It is nice for the View to have VR and I want this too, but Headtracking give you so much for the Gameplay itself to follow Enemies without starring on the Radar. That is for me the main Reason why I can't play ED without a VR HMD. Even TrackIR or Similar is no complete Alternative to VR Headtracking.

If you can run triple monitors at that resolution you should have no trouble at all running a Rift. And if you can afford a rig like that you can probably afford it too :) Seriously, once you try it you will consider the few hundred quid you spent well worth it even for the (probably at least six) months fun you get out of it before the CV1 gets here. And you won't care that the DK2 gets left in a cupboard after you get the CV1.

Yes, the resolution in a Rift isn't up to a monitor even running 1080p, and there's the screen door effect to consider. But again, you won't care. Any lack of visual quality is far, far outweighed by the sense of immersion and scale, and the sheer OMFG effect of the Rift. Don't be put off by what you read, most of the negative comments come from people who've never even tried the thing, or from tech types who simply count the numbers and omit to tell you about the quantum leap in gaming realism.

I haven't had such a rush from something new in gaming since I first set up networked Doom on PC. Do it. You know you want to.

This guy freaking says it all. He echos what every single ED OR user has ever said. There is no indecision here. And to further push you: the CV1 is a long way a way. 6 months is very optimistic. You'll probably be completely bored of elite by then and seen everything cool already and regret not seeing them for the first time on the rift. Also, you need a top too machine to run the DK2. Running the CV1 Will be exexponentially more demanding (pixels increase to the square of resolution), and I am really wondering if Nvidia are going to even be able to come out with a card able to support it in the next year or two. Its a mystery to me and easily the main reason they are taking so long. With two billion investment, they could have had the CV5 ready by now and probably do, sitting in a secret lab somewhere

It's awesome, you won't regret it. It actually puts you in the seat of your ship and you can really see the distance and scale of everything. Sure there are rough edges but you can excuse them. I hope you will be ok with those cards in SLI. I upgraded from a 780 to a 980 and it's butter but I appreciate that not everyone can afford to do that. In my opinion though it was more than worth it, no sense in having a compromised experience.

One tip I'd suggest, if you don't want to drop the game deail (although drop shadows to medium is a MUST), drop the Oculus quality. When I was on my 780 I would get judder in stations and dropping the Oculus quality (although it made everything a little fuzzier) really helped the FPS.

Everything said on here is so true. It is even weird when you do get shot up I swear you can almost smell burning electronics it feels that real.
