The idea being, that the outrage produced will result in the law's repeal (the troopers know everyone is simply going to hate them, anyway).

Perhaps, that is the reason behind Engineers. The Thargoids want the engineers gone...and we will have to grind all over again to fight them.

This way, they will simply curb-stomp a burnt-out humanity.

If past history is any indication of future performance (which is valid in FD but not investments), collecting mats and going to spin the wheel will not let up.

FD will hold the new shinys in front of us, the Pavlovian response will kick in (they have trained us), a new search for mats and the hidden tricks to find them, will start anew.

One could hope for some revolutionary change in engineering, given the general attitude towards it, but it is screwed on quite tightly to the game.
