The pains of a Mac user

I don't want the possibility of screwing up on a bootcamp install and ruining my laptop.

As long as you partition your drive properly, you can't ruin anything on osx.

It's one of those things that seems really complicated, but if you've backed up - what can go wrong?

Hi all.

I'm a Mac user patiently waiting for the platform release (read drumming fingers, watching Twitch feeds, YouTube vids and considering digging my Amiga 500 out of the garage to play Frontier: Elite 2 until Dangerous gets its Mac release!).

I bootcamped my machine. Even so I really want the Mac release soon so I can get rid of the Windows partition, it's wasting 50+ GB of my SSD and I use it solely for Elite Dangerous.

I know FD said early 2015 for a Mac release but how far away is that? I don't want the possibility of screwing up on a bootcamp install and ruining my laptop.

Use time machine to take a backup first. If you're not using time machine habitually already, then start today. It's good, no hassle backup which works well.

here's a tip for you or anyone else looking to put bootcamp on, I wish i'd seen this when I did it all:

When bootcamp 'makes' the windows install on your flashdrive within the bootcamp osx tool - let it do it's thing, then when it starts downloading the bootcamp drivers, cancel it.

That download is notoriously slow, probably for a reason knowing apple... I have a 100meg connection and it was still hanging a few hours later. Unless they've changed it since yosemite, cancel the download and google the bootcamp drivers you need for your exact mac. There are different ones for each year/configuration of imac.

EDIT: this is the one you need http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1721

Once the drivers are downloaded, put them in the root folder of your flash drive (which will have other stuff in it now from the bootcamp tool) - then restart your machine, hold ALT at statup and choose your windows flash drive to boot from, the installer should start from there.

Wish I had known that. I had numerous issues getting windows installed and had to download that dreadfully slow bootcamp several times. Took me 4 days in the end to get it working and all that time I had a shiny new X52 Pro sat beside me crying out "hurry up already!" :D

I have late 2013 iMac with bootcamp . I had trouble with windows 7 install not recognising the driver for the iMac Bluetooth key + mouse.

Only thing that fixed it was windows 8

Elite Dangerous is running very nice on the high setting.

8.1 has it's haters but all I do in windows is let the desktop load & double click the e : d launcher app

It was a Kickstarter funding stretch goal, that was met, to have a Mac release 3 months after the Windows release. So we should be looking at somewhere around March 16th.

That was the exact issue I had but it wouldn't detect a normal keyboard or mouse either. I could load the installer but didn't have a mouse or keyboard to go any further. Took ages to figure it out. I had already purchased window 7 so couldn't afford to dump it for windows 8. Perseverance paid off in the end :)

Edit: from memory I fixed it by buying a USB2 drive (USB3 wouldn't work) and using the only USB2 slot in the back of the mac for it to work.

Look, let's think about this logically. You Kickstarted ED. So you're already heavily invested in its success. Why wait another 3+ months when you can Bootcamp your Mac and crack on?

You're a Mac user. So you already have too much money, because Macs are pricey pieces of kit. (I am a Mac user, so don't think this is a dig).

The cheapest Mac that will run ED is about £1,000. You probably already have a Mac.

A copy of Windows 8.1 will cost you about £90 (I know because I just bought a copy to play ED).

You will need a proper HOTAS setup. I have the Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS X. That cost £45 retail (I bought it to play ED on my Mac) - on Amazon it costs less (because they don't pay any tax; that may not be an issue for you of course).

Now you need the Bootcamp instructions on the Apple website and about 5 hours to download all the Windows 8.1 updates. And then you can enjoy ED.

Do it. It's totally worth it!

Happy Christmas!

Thanks for all the info so far - further question:

Cheapest Windows I can find to download (rather than have delivered and incur waiting time) is £80, however I've found a programme called parallels that seems to do the same thing as Bootcamp (i.e. run windows apps etc on your Mac) so does anyone know if using Parallels at £60-ish is as effective for playing games, specifically Elite so I can get my game on before the Mac release?

Thanks in advance!

HUZZAR! I finally have a boot camped Mac running a 90 day free trial of Windows 8.1 Enterprise. After downloading drivers, Direct X, Bootcamp drivers and working out the "2" key on a windows keyboard has a different shift function than that of a Mac keyboard (password snags!) I have now downloaded Elite Dangerous and am almost ready to get in game. (Just need to map out my controls to my xbox controller!)

I am very grateful for your help and for that of everyone who commented on this thread. See you in stars Commanders!
