The Paint Job Prices, Pretty Hefty Yeah?

So am I the only person who thinks that the paints/skins on the website store are a bit steep for what they are? I mean... $3+ dollars for the very cheapest paint you can get for one single ship is pretty bad, and that's just the cheapest. The Viper has a Gold paint, one single paint for one single ship for over 17 dollars. You can have bought 20 games on Steam with that kind of money. Heck, just today I bought 20 Command & Conquer games for 75% cheaper than 17 dollars.

So... this is where the real problem no one will ever admit comes into play. Yeah lets say you spend 18 dollars for the 6 skins for a Viper - BUT - the only person who will Ever see it is yourself and ONLY when you go to outfit your ship. I know this game tried to emphasize as much as it could on multiplayer aspects but from what I've played for several weeks is that the only MP interaction is when you're at stations docking or undocking. Other than that you almost never interact with anyone, and 90% of the time if you do, you're never close enough to see their paint because they're 200-700L/s away.

So with that being said, personally I believe that the game being $60 dollars alone, and while every other videogame retailer had a sale for the holidays (all but Frontier and E:D) - that the $60 dollar price point for the game alone should warrant that the ship paints be a lower price. And by any luck, lower the price of the paints and it'll encourage more people to buy them. With the encouragement you have more people purchasing them, and with that it will allow the funding to create more paints to sell.

Unless you are in extremely dire financial straits - $3 is hardly going to bankrupt you. Besides - you are buying it to show to others, not to spend hours looking over it yourself.

It's a bit like those "Porch Harley" guys who will spend thousands of units of currency - just to have a thing to look at, polish at the weekends, and say they have one. It doesn't matter to them if the battery has no acid in it, there's no fuel in the tank, or if the keys are locked up in a safe that they will probably never open again.

They just want it :)

Yes.

Frontier polled backers and set the prices accordingly.

This is void, because Frontier is it's own enterprise at this point as it is their game, and it's a finished product at this point. They are selling their own game, so they can set and change and manage the prices for their products accordingly such as any seller and manufacturer can put a sale or discount for products.

And nope, you can't even see your own ship unless you go to the outfitting section at a station. Now what would make the paints more worth their price would be if the interior was also painted to the theme, not just the exterior.

I think the pricing isn't as much of a problem as not being able to see it (and getting value from the purchase). If we could see the skin or it somehow modified the cockpit, the current price might be easier to justify. It's not a lot of money to drop to support a game you enjoy but currently the implementation is a little off. Fix that and I bet we'd see a little less objection to pricing.

Certainly not going to buy any overpriced paintjobs until they implement an unconditional 3rd person view.

In Euro Truck Simulator 2 for example you play 99% in first person view but it still offers 7 3rd person view modes at the players disposal. I have never ever seen any threads complaining about that that is 'immersion breaking' or gives any advantages. And if it gives any advantages then everyone can use it to his advantage. The whole discussion about a completely self understanding 3rd person view is incredibly including the devs stance on it. Which is another reason why i'm not going to waste on more money on this ... wannabe game.

3 dollars? In the time it took me to post this I'd have earned 3 dollars if I was at work.

That's not exactly the principal, not only does everyone make that much money. But still, you're paying over 3 dollars for something that Nobody will and can see. Not unless Frontier adds more multiplayer elements to the game, and easier grouping, or a squad management system.

Aye is a shame not to be able to see them. I think we'll have something one day - walking around the ship in a station, camera drones for pretty space pictures. I agree with no 3rd person during combat, but I think beauty / vanity shots should be allowed or even encouraged. Hoping my faith proves justified, as I've already invested :)

Oh yes, and Wings! We need those, to share with others!

we should have the ability to upload our own custom ones since the community and modders could push them out faster

As reading from general guides, there may be posibility to implement 3rd person view but only in view mode, no direct interraction with ship so THEN painting jobs will be good :)

The backers were so happy about supporting frontier that they do not even care about being able to get paintjobs in game. Frontier had a who kickstarter post about this, but now it's just a locked feature that costs real money.

Paint jobs are cosmetic and you are not entitled to them by virtue of buying the game alone. You get everything you pay for with your $60, and ship skins are extra content that are not necessary for the game to function as advertised. They are vanity items and if you want them, you'll cough up the asking price, or you can't have them. It's that simple.

The skins are set at this price to help us avoid the necessity of other revenue streams, like subscription or other P2W style purchases. If you don't like the peices, don't buy them, that is the choice we have.

I have purchased a few and will likely get a few more.
As for MP, I have seen plenty of players in Gamma and skins were visible to all. A 3rd person view of sorts has been discussed (drones) and walking around is a planned expansion. Until then skins are mainly to help the continuous funding of the game.
