The Paint Job Prices, Pretty Hefty Yeah?

I have no idea how almost nobody in this discussion can comprehend the moral of the topic. Everyone jumps to wild conclusions in every single direction, some being true some being just Anne Frank . Like yeah, we all know we don't need to get these. But on the other hand if you play the game you know you've already forked up $60 dollars, which is extremely well worth it. This game is worth its digital weight in... something that's very high to digital weight. But if you want to make your ships more personalized to you, it's a kinda high price for something that Frontier has made so hard to even feel personal with. That's the moral of the story here.

Ship paint jobs --

Motivation: Personalize with your ship, and to stick out
-Note some people purchase these as "backers" to keep supporting the developers

Price: 3.50USD and up to 17.50USD

Content Execution: Low due to the low inability to personalize and the low chance of being with another ship which you'd like to stick out from
-Note when people feel unpersonalized they feel slightly less immersed

General note most of these things will be fixed, updated, and built upon in time making this topic ultimately void in the future, but no body will consider anything without it being brought to attention first.

People don't like hearing about how something can be done better for some reason. I'd love to buy as many vanity items as I can, if I feel as though I get some use out of it. Right now a paint job is almost as good as clicking a "donate" button for all the personalisation they provide. Hopefully it'll get fleshed out and improved in time. I'd like to see the shop thrive and become a worthwhile part of Elite.

You already see paint jobs on other ships you encounter.
Frontier are probably going to give us camera drones in the not too distant future. They said they're looking at how to package the functionality into the game - they already have external views as dev tools.

My main complaint with paint jobs is I can't get any for my adder, my type 7 and coulnd't for my asp when I still had it.

I bought the gold viper skin. Doesn't really look like the pictures of it, I can see it in the outfitting shop, not very shiny, its more like a tan or beige skin.
Might look good flying around, I have no idea.

As far as the price is concerned, 2 pounds for the cheaper skins seems a low price.
League of Legends basically funds their whole game with skin sales, look at what they charge for a comparison.

What I would pay a decent price for (up to 10 USD anyway) is for them to have a skin creator tool (web app say) that lets you be creative (within limits) in making your own skin for your own ship that has the following features

Allows you to pick a base colour or base skin if you already purchased another skin from the shop for that ship
Allows you to pick a style (ex: racing stripes, edge definition, fade to/from 2 colours, sparkle/glitter/metalflake effect, lightning, flames, rally style (picture stickers on your weapons pods, branding on your flat panels etc and allow maybe more than 1 effect to be used simultaneously
Allows you to pick an interior colour scheme

In this way they would have control over what content can be used for custom skins so there would be no profanity etc and then once its created its stored and used for your ship. This would give those with more artistic talent the ability to use said tools to create TRUELY UNIQUE skins for their ships both inside and out...

I would envision this tool costing 10 USD every time you wanted to create a custom skin for your ship and there is no real reason why such skins could not be made for ANY ship model they have in the game.
They already have base level skins for the meshes so something like this would give the ability to truely personalise a ship

Maybe even go a step further with the decals and give us the ability to create our own decals based on text input (which can be run through profanity filters etc) such as a decal for naming a ship which would then create in a selectable typeface a decal which would be placeable on the ship with its name, again within limits and filtered to help ensure there is no profanity etc...

These sorts of features would truely enhance the game later when the abiility to externally view your ship (via drones or whatnot for vanity shots etc) as well as making it a little bit more exciting meeting other players to see what they have done with their ship customisation :)

Um, other people can see your paintjobs you know

If you want to try to get close enough to another player to check out their paint job you had better be waving a white flag high and clear, and even then i expect they would be blasting at you before you even got close enough.

Our cheapest is 3.5 dollars in the US. Which isn't really that much especially when most skins are 5 dollars, but I still think there should be more out of it.. And the gold skin isn't shiny? Maybe it was just because of the static lights in the outfitting garage? I'd hope that in space or near stations the shine is greater with more intense lighting.

Yeah.. Like I said before lol but you put it into finer words. Most players you encounter in the game never look at your paint or even take the time to acknowledge anything about you other than "must find docking pad 37" or "I'm gonna shoot your face off because you're another player and I'm bored!".

Update: Hahaha yeah... I bet you can get a good look of many player skins, but first you have to interdict them and then see how they like that. If you survive, you survive more power to you but I can guarantee in that 5 minute battle you'll never once see their paint (or them see yours).
