The perks of being a bounty hunter // exploration

The general consensus on this board is that you make the most money in trading. And I agree; once you switch from a Sidewinder to a Hauler and find the right routes, credits come pouring in.
But I found it boring. I had to run from every interdiction because I could only tickle a petty Pirate in a rusty Viper with my single laser. Not to mention that the Hauler is pretty much a sitting duck to begin with.

So, I switched to a Viper + some extra firepower and decided to go hunting myself. Shooting criminals out of space might not be as financially rewarding as delivering 16 tons of Terrain Enrichment Systems from Aulin to iBootis, but it's a hell lot more fun.

Plus, since you're out and about in space, scouring all those unidentified signal sources for bounty, you'll often find other things as well that may bolster your bank account.
Just today, one of those signal sources led me to a few unattended tons of gold. Hm, would be a shame to let those go to waste! So I delivered them to a friendly person at the nearest black market and: ka-ching! Instant 27.000 credits.

Had I not gone around looking for unlawful pilots to dispose of, I'd never have flown so far off path between stations and I wouldn't have made that much cash in an instant.

If you're not afraid of selling stolen goods -err, I mean, selling items that other people intentionally left behind for you, there's enough money to be made outside of space trucking cargo from A to B. ;)

This is an excellent post and should hush those nay sayers about the trade/bounty route.

This is an open universe go expore

there is a reason it's called black market
If it is not mine I leave it alone
Stealing is stealing plain and simple

Well, quite, OP. I've got a reasonable amount of money in the bank and no particular need or intention to make more at the moment; I'd rather go fly round random star systems.

I've never flown an Anaconda, and the heavy Lakon only briefly; I'm slightly curious about flying the big ships but not enough to bother to fly more trade runs. 's like in FFE, I could fly a Panther Clipper, or fly an Asp... no contest.

It's worth noting that a kill-warrant scanner can increase the amount you get in bounties for killing NPC pirates, but it is a bit fiddly to use at times ;)

Had a similar experience to the OP today - SCing around an anarchy system hunting pirates I discovered two collections of abandoned gold just floating there. Selling them both on the black market netted me around 50K

Bounty hunting is great fun, especially if you find a profitable feeding ground. Last night I was cruising around the Morgor system getting some fairly hefty bounties from the large number of pirates there. However despite the fun of doing this I only netted 5050cr from six kills (ranging from 250cr to 1700cr bounties), which took approx. one hour to achieve. That isn't even enough to pay the insurance on my Viper if I was to blow it and get killed :(.

Oh and the pirate hunting mission I was bugged so I didn't get the 1250 from that either(didn't register the kills). These kind of hunting missions need to be significantly better paid than they are at the moment as the payment doesn't reflect the amount of time required to complete the mission.

I need to get a k-scanner. Which systems stock them usually?

I got mine at Chango dock in I-Bootis, but I think they are pretty wide spread.

I didn't even know yet these things existed. Thanks! I'll get one for my ship, this should make this path even more viable, especially now that you can collect the bounties of pirate in anarchy systems, too.

Also, thanks for sharing the video! Good fun to watch, and it makes me itch for more gameplay tonight. :)

Shows what a pain in the derriere the kill warrant scanner is to use tho.

A video of this exact type of game play

Great video! Another fun thing to do is camp out near the Navigation beacon near the sun. You'll see a lot of transport ships coming in. Shoot them until they drop their cargo, scoop it up, and sell it off. It's what those Sideys were doing when you hit that source signal. The NPCs flying the cargo ships should always drop their cargo in an attempt to get away. Usually, I let them ;)

I hope that scanner gets a tad easier to use. It seemed very finicky and took quite a while. I would guess you could throw your ship into reverse while the pirate is flying at you to get a bit more time scanning them, although you'll probably take some fire.

Just been watching your video Commander Sam, and I noticed that the Lakon dumps its cargo which then turns from coltan and bauxite into biowaste. I think you might have found a bug there.

It looked to me at the time like the Sidewinder collected all the good stuff (maybe a bug if he collected more than 4), but I will have a watch back.

I lasted 2 runs in the space van before dropping back to my Sidewinder. I don't make money as fast but I find investigating signals, mining areas, nav beacons, etc a lot more fun than space fed ex. I do love Euro Truck Sim 2 though, just not in space.

I should probably buy that warrant scanner but I'm pretty close to having enough for a Viper and I figure I'll save the scanner for that.

I also shot one NPC lakon and the coltan it dropped turned into radioactive materials or how is that trash thing called. I think it must be a bug, because no ship survived to collect the good stuff out of it.

I will report it.
