Actually it seems some for of current age computing is allowed though,, we've got synthetic voice generation, threat detection, holographic interfaces, bulletin boards, online trading systems. I'd guess they abolished anything upward from current tech computer to prevent rogue AI.
That said, Rogue AI is just one part of what's possible with DBOBE's obsession with Hard-science Sci-Fi, think smart matter and rogue nano-tech.
read some of the Culture books by Ian Banks, they've got these continuous outbreaks of nano-tech swarms, they call it SMATTER. Little nano devices, assembling and re-assembling into weird mobile hyper agile shapes and weapons. SUPER AWESOME. AND then controlled by Rogue AI.

But see thats why everything is so dumbed down, Information-age wise.
Even the nav beacons only transmit the system name in ancient morse code, and only in radio static bursts barely audible (in case you didnt notice that).
There is some sort of "upper limit" to computing and bandwidth capabilities.. Computers are barely able to host BBS pages, and the bandwidth being restricted more extremely.
This implies that the "Threat" Is all pervasive. Its in every thing, every where... right now. Humanity "overcame" this AI by dumbing down the technology, so now the AI is trapped in each discreet and primitive resource. Unable to network, and grow anymore.
So its safe to assume that everything is already infected. and any sufficient upgrade to pentium class CPUs will only result in a malevolent AI emerging that wants to kill you in .02 milliseconds. We only learned to cope by "KISS"; Keep It Simple, Stupid
That said, it does not mean that the AI lurking in our ship navicomputer cannot occasionally find some way to try and kill us, even within that archaic and limited amount of RAM...

Tell this to the Reviewers who are making bad reviews on Elite Dangerouses Interface. Calling it "Old World" and "A 1990's computer did a better job!" Maybe if they realized it was a design choice because of a storyline thing... theyd shut up
I dont mind that I have to thumb through menus, I think its neat... Some people just want things handed to them in the easiest of forms... Sadly.
