The reason of being... do you want THE Elite? Or something else...?

Hey there!

I'm in here since, errrr.... not so long, let's say enough to see that some are negative, others become negative, and others again will be negative, over ED. And of course all others :D

Why?!

At first, I love space sims with a minimum of freedom. The time I discovered Elite, back to the C64-tape (rewind :) ) games... I never ever found anything equal to it (ok, elite 2 etc....). Eve online, yes, and played 3 years on it, but... never found the Elite spirit.
The whole series privateer, wing commander, etc.... yes again, but never felt back what I got when I was playing Elite a time being. X series? Didn't played all, even bought rebirth (didn't knew it would be a big mess!), never found Elite feeling.

Last year I heard about a new ELITE. FINALLY they are doing something! But, as an early stage I put that info away and forgot about, since... a few month where I started with Beta 2.00! YESSSSSS!

Thinking back, it was already simply amazing to fly around and dock... WAHOOOOOOOOOOO. Buying and selling, pirating..... hey that's all what I missed, Elite is back and on the very good side of the road!

Now, we: the nerds, gamers, geeks, what ever.... always want more and more. I say: STOP - it's ELITE, NOT eve, x-series or whatever. Each game has its own + and - .
Elite Dangerous, YEARS after the last one, comes with something I was searching all those years, and found finally. Yes, it's yet unperfect, bit buggy here and there, but.... the older Elite were buggy too, less nice on screen, less smoother, but very ADDICTIVE - the very first and last game I played 16 hours in a row w/o eating, drinking, wc, nothing!

So, the question is, are you Elite or something else?! You, we, want always more, but at what price?! Star citizen side is simply mindblowing what they want to achieve, and I'll play it too, but again, I won't find the ELITE spirit in it, just another spirit which's Space related for sure.... but Elite is for me, something special, a game I played as a child, and want to re-discover, FRONTIER, you're on the right way to it...

I'd say, stop wining about, take and admire what comes (and nice things will for sure come along), and once you're done, you do like always: search the next game you want to spend your time in, cause at the end, it's what everybody's doing, and that won't stop tomorrow: buy, play, throw... buy, play, throw... never ending story.

Star Flight and Star Control II (Story Mode) are very close cousins, but they're 2d star map types. Games like Light Speed and Hyper Speed (By Microprose) are really great too, and have 3d like battles, but they're slow and not dog fights..

Open world type gameplay they may be. GREAT STORY and awesome Character Development, yes, do you get to customize your ship, of course! I-War (Independence War By Infrogrames) is pretty damn good in it's own right, but not open world. :/

It's odd, but you put *ALL* the best part of those games together, and they're no Elite. (Although I'll bet they were greatly inspired by them)

But there is nothing quite like Elite: Dangerous (Now with added 400 Billion Awesome!)

P.S. Try out those games before the 22nd. There is time! :D

Very well said (except the ending)!

And don't tell me you did't smoke during that 16 hours session?

However it is, people really need to slow down a bit. We are all too fast these days. I understand that, how is it called, instant gratification, it feels good, like fast food, but also cheap.

I know people who can't play WT realistic planes battle because "it takes too long and i shoot one plane and then they shoot me down". I played Strike Fleet on C-64 in REAL TIME, from Europe to New York. Well you couldn't save your game at all so when you go to sleep to be ready for the school tomorrow morning your only option was to pause the game. Or you could simply let your fleet toward the New Your in real time. And i i would succeed to destroy the enemy that would be all i ever wanted from the computer game. So you could say - one win in two days. Had no problem with that back then and don't have a problem right now. Except i'm thirsty.

I agree elite is a good game for a couple hours a week, but hard to keep busy in it longer than that. I stopped putting in my couple hours a week even waiting to get more game in the game. :)

Interesting. Being Elite is part of my identity in a way that no other game matches - there's no other game which has left such a permanent mark of achievement. It even annoys me that Dangerous keeps trying to tell me I'm "Mostly Harmless." ^^

Just a note... I am a original Frontier player. I have always kept my eyes open for Elite like game , and reasonable cost...
I note that almost none of you are aware there have been others, including planet landing. Here's is a video and the game link. Note there people have been around since about 10 years ago:

LOL it looks like elite borrowed a lot of the things from that game, same port door, etc. I hope they keep going with that concept and take it even farther.

Very good game. I played this until I dropped into ED beta (initially I was aiming for release but - here we go).
To me currently the best space game/sim around besides ED. It's a one-man project, unbelievable!

Nope hehe, Evochron is old but the origin of Elite is MUCH older!

Yeah, that it is one guy in his spare time that made it is amazing, and he is open to new cockpit designs mods too. I've talked to him a few times, I was one of the beta testers there too But he has said it was all based originally on Frontier.

damn... you do bring back a good title . i so *liked Star Flight, but could never goes far into the game because of the stupid way of saving.... you always end up with a corrupt save file and it totally made me sick to restart the game like a 20th time... if it wasnt of that ... ;) *wink

I like EM, it's a fun title. And the whole single-guy aspect makes it that much cooler. But yeah, since the first Elite, space games have always billed themselves as or tried to be "the next Elite". Some like EM have gotten it pretty much right. Except now we actually have the next Elite. :)

Did anyone from you try the game F.O.F.T in the Past ? Many good Ideas but buggy as hell.
I agree totaly with the OP ...if I want other Content/Multiplayer/Storyline I must choose an OTHER game.
But I want Elite and I get mostly all what I want with ED.....

Way back when I played a game called Lightspped and Hyperspeed by MicroProse that had a similar module ship but not as 3D... mostly color polygon.
And, the first PC game with ship modules that could blow out and needed to be rebuilt was "Sundog" by FTL games in San Diego.. Sundog predated Elite by a few months but wasn't 3D

(Yep, lifetime gamer, playing Advent when it was new on a DEC10/PDP11)

This made me think, what was the space game in the late 90s with very realistic flight model and surprisingly good graphics? Independence war?
