Early on, just before the full release, there was a newsletter confidently stating that the storyline for the game will kick off shortly with the death of the Emperor, and that there would be a power-struggle over the throne. Now, clearly, while we've all heard some mutterings on Galnet, my question is this: why has it not happened yet? More to the point, why hasn't any story of any great significance happened yet; why has all the galnet content amounted to little more than rumour and fluff?
I'm starting to come to the conclusion that a grand imperial civil-war was envisaged, one in which players could influence the destiny of the Imperium by standing behind various interested parties, early on in the release we even discussed which parties we would side with. But nothing happened. Why?
It seems to me that the most likely explanation is that upon release the reputation and dynamic galaxy background simulation was more broken than Frontier thought it was. Indeed, there hasn't really been any major overhauls and bugs are still very common indeed. Is this the reason the Emperor is still alive? Because they can't get the background simulation to work anywhere near as intended? Thoughts?
