The rejection of cross-platform gameplay, let's vote.

So I've been doing more research about the release of this Elite: Dangerous for consoles because I love this game and I want everyone I know to get in an play. In that process I would like to be able to play with them. Now From what I see on http://www.pcgamer.com/david-braben-explains-the-problem-with-elite-dangerous-cross-play/ Braben does not want to make the game cross-platform because "is we’ve also said that we’ll continue to do updates across all platforms, and what we didn’t want was PC updates to be held up for whatever reason, like if there’s a delay on another platform." Honestly as a gamer who is excited to play with the console community I'm ok with waiting. Now I know i'm just one person and that can't change a game dev's opinion. So I've setup a survey monkey survey and I want to share the results with the dev's. I want to know what the elite dangerous community wants from the game so the dev's know what their customers want before they make such a huge decision. I think all gamers want cross-platform games, and this is a great game to do it with.

Here's the poll URL:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5WZSX8C

All who take the survey will be able to see the results once they vote.

If you wish to view the results go here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/results/SM-33CBSZT7/
Please vote before you view as to remove any possibility of bias.

To Frontier: Hopefully this helps.

Edit: There seems to be some confusion. To clarify: From the interview information I've read, while all platforms will affect the universe as a whole (Community Goals, Discovery, Economies, etc.), you will not in affect be able to physically see or interact with players from different platforms. He states that this is because he does not want PC gamers to have to wait for updates that other consoles require a long approval process to receive. I am for cross-platform but want them to make it a complete cross-platform system aka able to interact with all platform players.

I'd rather not, and get updates in a timely manner without having to wait for Microsoft to approve the console updates.

Plus, consoles hold PC back blah blah etc etc

This train has passed, the horse is dead, this game has already been sold to users of different platforms. The beta Mac version is being released soon. Albeit the good intentions, this all seems a bit pointless.

Just another storm in a tea cup. After all the debates, no one has convinced me a multi platform game is a bad thing.

Yep, second that. Have nothing against crossplay, but if it holds back pc patches then thats no option.

I read your post as wanting cross platform, according to Newletter #65 we will all be sharing the same server so think that is a done deal

If you mean that you are against it then as previously said it is s decision already made and nothing will change, they are a business and that means selling copies, lots of copies. The more money FD gets then the more likely that ED will become what we all hope for.

Either way a poll/petition etc is pointless

I don't mind either way, let xbox players play with us or not. But if they do, and ever meet up, it will be the console players at a disadvantage due to control options, not the pc players. So on their head be it.

Definitely don't want cross-platform. Despite console players being a massive disadvantage in combat, I also don't want to see potentially dumbed down features put in on the PC version for the sake of the game being console-friendly. Just no.

This is what the newsletter says : "Players on Xbox One, PC and Mac will all share the same evolving narrative and galaxy state, so Community Goals and galactic exploration are about to get a major assist from players on Xbox One."

What I understand is that the background simulation will be shared (markets and such) but I see nothing indicating that Xbox and PC players will effectively be playing together. In fact, I wonder if Microsoft wouldn't be against it, because of Xbox Live, security concerns, yadda yadda...

FD's priorities irritate me honestly. Game is still a skeleton and they are making it for Xbox? What console player is going to stick with this game more than a few hours in its current state?

The amount of balancing to make PC vs Console play fair isn't worth it, people will always complain, so expect the background simulation, goals and sch to be shared, but the instances to be separate. Also that way you can patch the different versions at different rates, server side stuff can be updated whenever, PC patches can be released when they are done and console patches can be released whenever they have gone through all the hoops and rings of fire they have to; PC players having access to new stuff first doesn't directly affect consoles (but it does stop sharing an account over platforms).

OT, this is all a storm in a teacup, nothing we say is going to change things now.

the new consoles are basicly pc-s, xbox one is an amd cpu machine even runs win8 so the only diffirence is they have a crap controller :D

I think the game will improve more if they get more customers, and from what I understood for now we will only share the same universe database, not actual instances.

Why use another website to run a poll when the forum allows for polls?
And you are missing options for "I dont care" and "I don't see that it makes a difference" and "pie"

Hi Guys, been following this since Alpha and if you look at the early dev diaries and the like you will see the developers have been using x box controllers since day one. Looking good for cross platform, revenue, future proofing and expanding the player base :D

Xbox uses mostly PC code and assets so its probably easier to port than the Mac version. FD have been pretty clear (albeit in a quiet way - you don't reveal company plans after all!) that were aiming for multiple platforms all along.

Sharing the Galaxy state is a great way to do it too; you could never get direct console to PC multi anyway. Is there a game that does that? I can't think of one, but I only have an aging PS3 these days, used for playing Blurays and not much else.

I didn't vote and nor shall I. your presuming that just because a console version arrives we have to wait for updates as a PC platform, updates don't rely on both versions of the update being ready at the same time, because its only the background sim data being shared, id also expect that the code for both would be similar, and with the additional revenue from console players more staff to work on all aspects of the game,

totally irrelevant post and poll based on innuendo and suspicion rather then collated data and hard facts

Enty

Nope. Consoles will only hold the game back for the simple fact that sales will not be good one the XBOne, FD will not be able to hire enough staff for the console team to work in tandem with the PC team in a timely fashion, and funding from the PC side of things will start to siphon off into the console port very early on for a very disastrous effect on the budget as a whole.

FD isn't going to earn diddly off of XBOne after Microsoft takes it's huge cut and they pay for the expenses of porting it over. Add to that the costs of keeping physical copies on the shelves (over 80% of all console sales are still physical copies) and the costs of the new staff, and FD is going to lose money hand over fist.

Porting sub-AAA titles only makes sense when you have a low cost game with low overhead. ED is low cost, but the overhead is high, and that means that adding more overhead with no significant benefit will run the game into the ground.
