The return of Rock Hermits?

Are Rock Hermits planned to reappear at any point? I miss that element of classic Elite ;)

Now, on a slight tangent, having heard people wanting to own their own stations and others saying "heck no!" to that idea, I wonder... why don't we make it possible for a player to create a Rock Hermit station?

I'm not sure what the rules would have to be given the persistent nature of the universe (only one allowed per field?) or what they could be capable of (basic repairs? Refuel? Rearm? Whatever it is it would be very limited) Maybe it only has 2 docking spots (one reserved for the owner), or maybe just one (and only the owner can get permission to land)?

Being able to create a Rock Hermit station could allow an explorer to set up shop in an area and explore more thoroughly. Maybe A Rock Hermit "Kit" would require at least a total off 10 "class" worth of space (ie 2 Class 5, or 2 Class 4 and a Class 2), which would be targeted on an asteroid and would manufacture it in a day or so. Or something that requires 2 trips - one for the hollowing out, the other for the framework.

The dock itself wouldn't look at all as nice as what you see at outposts. It would look like a cave with a basic framework for landing. Maybe additional trips could make the station nicer, but it should never be able to do what even a basic outpost can. Oh, and it would still be expensive as heck.

Something like that could give you a sense of a home base without unbalancing anything.

My very own man-cave in space. Yussssssss !!!!!

Like this idea. If it was kept basic, no airtight forcefield either for when you blow out a canopy, literally a barebones rock shop as a safe haven. Perhaps a max of 4 pads (for a Wing) and no silly "walk around a space station" fluff.

Worth re-posting in the Suggestions sub-forum ?

Trekking around the galaxy and finding the perfect rock to hollow out would be awesome- I'd imagine there'd be some pretty amazing sunrises to witness out there.

Very nice idea :) It would add a sense of place, while providing utility and function, without getting in the way of anyone else's gameplay. If anything it would add to it; rare traces of life in the vastness of space.

And even if all of us can set up little caves by drilling into roids, just jump to a ring and there are enough rocks for all of us.
I think the scale of everything in this game would be a plus faktor here.

I like the idea.
I can see it implemented in 2 or 3 years from now or never.
Because i got a feeling, you know, it's not they way they want you to feel.
Nothing in the game is designed to keep you in one spot, everything shouts at you "Nice that you have been here...NOW MOVE ALONG AND GO AWAY!"
And i have the perferct PR-answer already (keep in mind there really are artworks of such a "base"!!!):

"Thank you CMDR Mossfoot. That is an idea that was discussed before in the early design process. Although it is not on the "big list" right now, we are looking forward to see something like that in a later expansion."

1 year later there'll be a sad and totally surprising statement:

"Unfortunatly we had to give up the plans for creating a player base. Due to the core design of how the generation of asteroids works in our Stellarforge engine, it is impossible to implement a feature like that. We are truly sorry"

I'd love to be proven wrong though :D

Cynicism aside, I strongly disagree with that sentiment. There's nothing about the concept of a personal base as outlined in LazerusKI's post that goes against the feeling of Elite. I think it's just one more of those things (like planetary landing) that we always wanted.

Owning stations as we currently have them? That does goes against the feeling, regardless of what the naysayers say (or neigh) ;)

As would we all :D
