The Rodina Thread

Hi Folks

Thought I would drop by with news.

Rodina is another new Space Sim currently under development and has some really cool features. The "holy grail" of space sims has always been the ability to fly to any planet from space, land, get out your ship and then be able wonder around. Rodina can do this if this early concept vid is any measure, here take a look http://www.elliptic-games.com/index.shtml

Don't look to closely at the graphics as it is early days, but think instead of the concept and what could be done with this

Thanks go to bchimself on the SSC for highlighting this one

Looks good. I really like the idea of being able to walk round the ship properly too.

My one reservation is actually the procedurally generated landscape - I don't think it looks realistic, it would be clever if they could take the procedural algorithms and mix it with other stats that include tectonic plate formations, weather wear etc to make a more realistic landscape.

Yea, I thought this one shows a lot of promise. :)

One question springs to mind though, just how long is Frontier going to sit back and watch? Space Sims are coming back, there is little doubt in my mind about that. There are so many new projects on the go, its hard to keep track of them all. Now don't get me wrong, I think this is great. The genre has been ignored for far too long in my view, but its way past time for Frontier to get up and throw their hat into the ring too

Sorry for that mini rant there

@Geraldine
Nothing wrong with a good rant. As i've said countless times, i can't see Frontier doing anything else other than cute and cuddly games for the consoles, as this is where the money is. The fact that there are probably millions of people who would buy a new Elite or similar game if it had the features we want is irrelevant. They are no different from any other corporate entity these days. What happened to actually giving people what they want for a change? Now there is a great concept :D

Back on topic. The guy who is making this should talk to the other guy who is making Heliosphere, put those two together and there's a brilliant game!

Call of Duty, Mass Effect and Halo make a lot more money than cute & cuddly games, and let's face it/stretch the truth a little, Mass Effect is half way there, with a bit more it could be a space sim.

The market is begging for a AAA space sim title (by 'market' I probably just mean 'I am')

The problem i have with those games is long term content. Especially true with Mass Effect and Halo, games that can be completed in a very short period of time, in Halo's case a weekend. This also sums up the game playing public of today i have to say where content is irrelevant, just flashy graphics and things that go boom will suffice and screw the story, assuming there is one, Mass Effect a case in point again.

If the game playing public are stupid enough to put up with this, and are happy to fork out £50 for a game then serve them right. I for one refuse to purchase these games just for that reason alone.

If we head back to games that actually do have some content, especially in the space sim genre, then look no further than the X3 series, well thought out, reasonable story, plus enough content to last you until the day you die.

While not wishing to bash Frontier in any way, they don't have the resources to make a new Elite, otherwise they would have by now. A game with that scope requires a major team of programmers, artists, you name it, something they can't afford which is why they concentrate, or seem to at least on one project at a time, and projects that make them money, always important for a company and i don't blame them.

That said with the likes of new programming talent that is out there, the guy in this thread is a good example, plus the aforementioned Heliosphere chap as well, it proves that there are people with the talent and skill to pull off an Elite like game, they just need some support. Believe me if i had the cash, i'd fund them just for being original.

DB goes on about the fact there isn't enough fresh programmers around with the required knowledge, well here are two for starters.

Your original point though was that there is too much money in cute & cuddly for Frontier to risk working on a space sim or hardcore game. My point is that there is more money in hardcore games. Black Ops 2 has more pre-orders than MW3 for example. The Halo franchise has made more money than even the Harry Potter franchise! (source:IGN)

Also, there is a place in the industry for shorter games. I for one don't have time for all my games to last 50+ hours and am grateful for the shorter completion time. I'm a hardcore gamer but my job and family life come first. I appriecate the shorter games then, once I've completed them I can go back to Forza.

A Frontier space sim would probably take up a lot of my time - but that's fine. As long as the other games I play I can get through quickly.

Also, a final point, another thread on this site has already pointed out that Frontier are plenty big enough to handle a large game - they're one of the largest independant UK developers out there. (Which I didn't realise at first either to be honest).

With all the great Indie dev work going on, its only a matter of time now (inh my view) until a big dev steps up and gets their AAA space sim to market before the others. Whoever that may be, is going to enjoy an advantage over their competitors. But here we are, posting on the forum owned by a dev company who has the rights to the most famous and most loved of all space sim IPs :S

I will still keep the faith though :D

Also, the SSC is going to be undergoing an upgrade soon. Darkone, (the site admin) is going to make it even easier for commercial space sim devs to put their games on there and (when finished) a platform to sell them

Rodina and 0x10c^2

Good to see more developers working on Elite like games.

Have a look at Rodina. http://elliptic-games.com/
It shows great promise. I felt REALLY sorry for the developer when I read his FAQ. He must have had a David Braben / Ian Bell moment, ie they need to get this out fast and it has to be like nothing else and it has to be a secret incase someone else gets it out there. Well with Rodina the "wow factor" is already getting done by someone else, none other than Markus Persson ie Notch from Minecraft.

Have a look at Rodina here. http://elliptic-games.com/

and Notch's upcoming title 0x10c^2 here http://0x10c.com/

Enjoy.

and before you ask.....no matter how good both these games will be I will *ALWAYS* come back to the Elite series, they are and shall forever reside at the #1 position.

I just edited the post to put in the new URLs for Rodina as there have been some changes since this original post.

I remember when Freelancer was released a few years ago. I spent quite some time on it, but was back playing First Encounters within a few days :p

I always go back to Elite, as you know I never managed to get fully into Elite II or First Enc, I have done far more now though.

A few details are out about Bungie's new game now.

Ages ago I think I read somewhere they were going to do a space game, admitedly this now looks like another fps - buuut it might involve space combat. Halo Reach had a space combat level (a bit arcadey for my liking but still pretty good)

Anyway, enough babbling here's the link - http://uk.ign.com/wikis/destiny

Rodina Nearing Release

Well it's been a while since I was last in this thread, however Rodina is nearing it's release date, December the 13th. More details here. Looks interesting! :)

Thanks go to Pinback on the SSC for the info.

More Details About Rodina

Hi Folks! :)
Dropped by the Rodina site and found some more details about this game, sounds very interesting indeed. Have a look below.

"About The Game

Rodina is a space exploration RPG inspired by games like Freelancer, Star Fox, and the Elder Scrolls. It has several cool features that space games typically lack- huge procedural planets you can seamlessly land on, the ability to walk around planets as well as your ship, and customizable ship interiors. It’s being made by Brendan Anthony, who has worked as a game developer for 10 years, and as worked as a gameplay programmer for Bethesda Softworks on such games as TES4: Oblivion and Fallout 3.

At a Glance

There has yet to be a video game which delivers the experience promised by decades of science fiction like Star Trek, Star Wars, and Firefly. The ability to explore space, to interact on the macro scale of planets and stars as well as the micro scale of rooms and characters, to own and customize a ship which becomes a kind of traveling home, to be given the freedom to explore and interact with the world at one’s own will- these features have yet to come together in a single game which fulfills the dreamed-of worlds that scifi fans imagine. Rodina aims to be a small step in the direction of realizing those dreams.

Rodina is a game where you seamlessly explore a solar system. Fly your spaceship from planet to moon to asteroid with no loading screens or warp doors. Explore these huge, procedurally-generated landscapes on foot. Customize your ship’s living spaces to suite your tastes. Get into dogfights with alien spaceships in order to secure control of valuable resources and property.

Rodina is an ambitious project and will grow over time after it is first released. The initial version of the game will be simple, and if it is successful, production will continue and features will be added. The possibilities are endless and over time we hope to develop Rodina into the game described below.

Long-Term Features:

Explore Space, Inside and Out

In Rodina, you can explore the world both inside of a ship and outside of one. You will find yourself having dogfights in space, gun battles on a planet surface, defending your ship from boarding parties, and capturing ships belonging to your enemies.

Huge Seamlesss Procedurally Generated World

Explore procedurally-generated planets with millions of square kilometers of surface area. Seamlessly travel from a planet’s surface to the depths of space, with no loading screens, warp doors, or invisible walls. Investigate asteroids, moons, space stations, and stars.

Open-Ended, Simulated Gameplay

Rodina will boast a game world simulation which supports player creativity and rewarding feedback. Release toxic gas into the engine room. Fly a false flag in order to trick your opponents into thinking you are their ally. Hack into the ship’s computer and delete the source code that fires the weapons, rendering them useless. In Rodina, experimentation and creativity are valued over following a game script written by a designer."
