PvP The sad reality of Open. Sometimes you need to unfriend people

I had to unfriend someone yesterday after some PvP turned mildly nasty. Silliest thing really; having crimes ON when role playing as a bounty hunter. Not "ima dox yo butt" nasty, just nasty, and nobody got time for dat! Video on my channel.

Aren’t bounty hunters supposed to be on the side of the law?

You were out bounty hunting, and there is no fault in flying with crimes on.

If the other CMDR doesn't like it, then they should stay out of jurisdictions wherein they carry a wanted or warrantable status.

If you ever catch one of my pirate ships in a security system with such a status, feel free to engage and bring the cops with you. Lord knows I'd do it to you.

A tad silly. Bounty hunters should have report crimes on. They are on the side of the law.

Purely from an RP perspective yes, but when a player interdicts me and has crimes on, I always take it as a sign that they're not very good and need to rely on help. Gank situations are different however..
 
It's amusing to me that having the cops help is so often seem as a sign of cowardice, yet having an NPC pilot help you in an SLF is totally fine. There are some edge case adding scummy things you can do with crime reporting, but for the most part the current C&P system tends to function best if all parties leave crimes on.

Edit: to clarify, I didn't mean to say they were 100% equal. I just find it amusing that one (that can sometimes summon as little as a weak- eagle) has this massive stigma attached to it, and the other is perfectly fine. I was just pointing out the similarities, since they're ultimately both NPC ships fighting on your behalf. I don't think SLFs SHOULD have a stigma associated with them, but I also think people should relax a little about crime reporting. In a proper duel? Sure. Crimes should totally be off. When attacking clean players that you strongly suspect have crimes off? Again, crimes should totally be off. Most other cases? I don't really care. I know that if I'm in a clean ship and someone attacks me, I expect them to become wanted such that I can legally defend myself.

People need to remember that outside of organized matches, in Open anything goes - especially if someone is wanted.

Yep. Even in organized matches, it's not a bad idea to ask/remind an opponent to switch crimes off. We all have brain farts. It can be a legitimate oversight. So, if this was organized, the other CMDR should own some minor responsibility for not asking. If it was emergent in nature, that's the chance you take. I don't see any good reason for the guy to pop his cork at the OP. It's not like he's is going to San Quentin.

If anything I find that this example underlies the irreconcilable attitude of PvPers vs the immersion crowd. As I wrote about previously, what upsets many players is not the fact itself of being ganked, it's being ganked without an in-game reason.

The player OP is lamenting about was flying around in Open treating each instance as an FPS map - he was expecting to attack and be attacked and was projecting his own concept of fairness in it. Which makes sense if you are playing Quake, less sense if you are playing an MMORPG where asymmetric warfare exists due to background and settings - in this case, the police intervening to attack a wanted criminal.

This guy will have a hard time even understanding why people object to being attacked for the lulz, no wonder the divide in this community is so great. And to be honest the game doesn't make that much of an effort to crystallise what it want to be, being very ambiguous when it comes to "realism" vs gameplay.
