The Sagan Initiative, an independent community led by scientist from across the galaxy who have grown disaffected with AEGIS and the galaxy-at-large's steady drumbeat toward inter-species war has announced plans to begin work toward positive communications with the alien species known collectively as "the Thargoids".
Professor Steven Eisler, formerly of the Okinura Xenobiology Institute and now acting as spokesperson for The Sagan Initiative, issued the following message which, for reasons unknown, was not picked up by the regular Galnet News services, "Centuries ago one man, a visionary, looked to the stars and dreamed of what could be. That man was Carl Sagan. If you visit Sol and seek out one or both of the Voyager spacecraft you'll be treated to the sounds of one of mankind's earliest attempts to communicate with other intelligent beings in our cosmos."
"Sagan knew that the attempt was almost certainly futile but he also knew that it meant a great deal to the human psyche. The act of reaching outwards in peace was meant for forever color mankind's view of his place in the universe."
"Today we are in contact with an alien species that appears on almost every level to possess a high degree of intelligence. We have met those aliens with force and casualties have been experienced by both sides. It doesn't matter who fired the first shot. It is up to us, the children of Earth, to carry on the work of Dr. Sagan and find a voice that these beings can understand and use that voice for peace."
"We are therefore announcing that, on November 8th, the 1369th anniversary of the birth of Carl Sagan, we will begin collecting materials that we hope can be used to devise synthetic hybrid devices that can be used to gauge and record new interactions with these 'Thargoids' in hopes of better understanding them and building a basis upon which we can communicate with them. This initiative will last for one week."
"We have no resources. We cannot pay anything beyond fair market prices for these materials. Specifically we are looking for Soontill Relics and Meta Alloys. These can be delivered to Sagan Dock in the Kasho system".

Note: Community submitted goals and Galnet news items are currently offline with Frontier so I have no other way to promote this right now.
Why get involved? First, it would be a lovely way to commemorate a great scientist who spent so much of his life trying to get the people of Earth excited about science. Second, if Frontier sees a sudden influx of these materials to Sagan Dock and manages to link that datum to this initiative then, perhaps, they will see that quite a few of us want interactions with the Thargoids that go beyond combat.
