The Samsung Odyssey...

Only 360x400 more resolution and the same FOV. No thanks ill stick with pimax.

IF and WHEN they deliver, if it will be working as advertised with actual proper binocular overlap...yeah. Wipe all existing headsets off the market and tell them to be careful on their way out - the door slams hard.

But I'm still skeptical. Somehow one small company leaving all known giants in the dust seems...ehhh...yeah. But as I said before, I'll be happy to put some hot sauce in my hat and have at it with a cool pint.

Yeah, it’s *Slightly* higher resolution than my pimax BE headset. There is no mention in the article if it’s steamVR compatible though or how it’s doing tracking. Anyone know?

Another advantage to the wmr headsets, they will eventually work with Xbox one X.

I’m guessing as long as the Xbox game implements VR though.

Interesting times as technology shifts. I just question MS commitment to stuff. They’ve got a bad track record in recent years of releasing and abandoning technology very quickly (phone, band, surfaceRT and the latest one is the streaming music service) they seem more enterprise / cloud focused as a company under Satya Nadella

It remains to be seen how well the inside/out tracking stands up with those controllers in a fast paced shooter environment, tracking and occlusion wise. They don't look like anything I would prefer over Touch either.

A bit of an unenthusiastic review here. Aside from the inside-out tracking, no mention of any huge positives.

"Granted, I was still able to see individual pixels, and the screen-door-effect (the space between the pixels) was more pronounced than I would have hoped given the resolution, quite possibly due to Samsung’s unique PenTile subpixel arrangement"

I will keep 8K

I'm wondering the same. What happens if you put your hands behind you? Lose tracking?
The controllers look a little more pistol-gripped than the Vive wands, but not nearly so good as Touch - which wraps around your hand and gives you some degree of whoops-I-whacked-the-wall protection. (Or in my study's case, hands into the a ceiling fan) :p

My exact experience, as well. First time I hit the ceiling fan was The Golf Club VR (like to see how Samsung tracks club speed) I was glad Touch was wrapped around my hand for protection.

i wish samsung had used some improved version of the psvr hexagonal subpixel arrangement as its dramatically better than pentile. it seems strange they havent cos they seem to have emulated the psvr in every other way!

I do not know why all these new mixed reality headsets are being released with the same SDE problem as the current headsets. The PSVR has been there for over a year "without" SDE to be copied. That's a shot in the foot.

This headset is pretty nice for me, it's the headset with the best resolution so far (1440x1600/eye vs 1080x1200/eye for the rift/vive). This will be really good for ED:)
Don't compare it with Pimax, it's only a prototype and we don't know the release date, we will not get it before a long time if never at all.

My only concern is will FD make ED compatible with the new Windows Mixed Reality Platform? With Xbox in mind I hope that will be the case!
If it's not the case we will need to wait someone to create a wrapper to make it work on steamVR.

It's 1.78x the resolution of the rift/vive, that's a big difference imo.
Yeah it’s slightly more than my current pimax BE headset, but the new pimax blows this thing away .. that’s to be expected, Samsung is being more conservative and safe with the tech being used while pimax is more bleeding edge ... that’s the trade off

I’m checking out the “prototype” soon. (I’m on the Kickstarter) the pimax piplay software already works great with steam, and elite looks amazing in their current headset with the higher resolution, you will notice much sharper text on the Samsung ad well.
