I'll be chronicling my trip in this thread. It's been a much delayed trip, but later today, at 19:00 hours, 07/03/3302, I leave my base station of Ray Gateway, Diaguandri, in the Asp Explorer "The Vagrant Shetland", and I head for the abyss...

I've named the ship for a breed of horse very important to me, and the Shetland Pony represents to me a certain strength in spirit, packing an incredible punch for something so small. I should know, as I've plenty of time with the breed.

The ship build, for those inclined:

I'll be looking for anything, anything, all in the pursuit of galactic enlightenment, and I'll be keeping this thread updated on my activities outside the bubble.

I'll start off tomorrow by posting images of the ship in the final preparations for launch.

From one explorer to another, see you out in the black...

What is lakuma?

That's a fair question. Allow me to explain. Lakuma is part of my faith. I believe in the teachings of a race of unicorns, one of whom I believe I have a spiritual connection with. They hail from a distant planet near a star they call Lakuma. Now, everything about this is all celestial, so I decided to name my trip for the star my guides hail from. Obviously I won't ACTUALLY find it... It is just a game... But I thought it was a nice thing to name it for. :)

The very best of luck with your quest CMDR o7

Hopefully it wont be too long before your hooves touch down on the place you seek! [big grin]

Day one:

I have completed outfitting my Asp Explorer. Unfortunately, the AFMU's I wanted were not available at Ray Gateway, so I had to travel to a system about 80 light-years away to purchase these vital components.
All other units, including the ship herself, were purchased at Ray Gateway. All components were purchased at a 15% discount.
I had four choices of paint to apply to my Asp for the trip. Factory standard, black, gold, and orange & black. As it's a colour scheme I find quite appealing, I have opted for the orange & black paint option. To boot, this will make the ship stand out on planet surfaces, as well as the black of space. My camera drone will be seeing a lot of use...
I will be updating my Inara log shortly to reflect the change in my fleet. I sold my Cobra Mk III & Viper Mk III for the Asp, and have returned my Cobra Mk IV to factory configuration, although it still has reinforced bulkheads owing to the fact the ship class isn't sold at Ray Gateway.

Here are some pictures of my ship. As you can see, I have also purchased a bobble-head to add some character to my cockpit. I have affectionately named him Charles.

At 19:00 hours this day, I will leave my current location and begin my trip by retracing the steps that I took in the short time I was with the Distant Worlds Expedition. I plan to make it to Shapley 1 by the day's end, where upon reaching the region, I will begin the first comprehensive mapping of my expedition. I will stay in the region for a day or two, before heading to the next stop, The Lagoon Nebula.

Nice build, oh, horny one, but have you considered cutting the fuel tank in half? It would increase your individual jump range to 34.23 LY while leaving you 4 max range jumps.

I had considered it, but I prefer to have a higher un-refuelled range over maximised jump range.

I have plenty of Jumponium, and two SRV's, so if I need a higher jump range, I can get it. :)

I am in two minds about this idea. I am currently picking my inwards from near the end of the perseus arm and am constantly getting route unavailable. I am playing with fuel and have squeezed a 35.1LY jump out of my 32.X LY asp. However, I get very nervous flying with low fuel and the relief when I can get a bit of a run and fill up to three quarters or even completely full is lovely.

Look, whatever happens, whether you succeed or you fail, whether you achieve your higher goals or if you make do with lesser ones, if you find a ringed earth like or only ever see rocky ice planets, whether the suns shine in your cockpit or you only ever feel the cold breath of space, you will always be a winner because you have a bobble head called Charles.

Charles is a pretty swell dude. :D

Day Six:

For the past few days, I have been experiencing technical issues with a number of my ship's visual interface systems.

I had thought that I might have to turn back home. However, these problems have been resolved.

An hour after my last update, I made it to the system Fine Ring Sector JH-V2 C2-4, and I landed on planet A1, Coordinates -19,+85.

It was after landing that I suffered issues with my interface. So I had been camped on the surface of this planet for a few days, until now.

A few hours ago I took off. Before that though, I took a photo of my ship on its first planet surface of the trip:

Shapley 1.png

Members of the current Distant Worlds Expedition may recognise that mountain from Waypoint 1.

I am now travelling through some systems, heading towards the Lagoon Nebula, which is the point I left Distant Worlds. Along my way back to it, I am scanning every unclaimed planet I find. I've already swept several entire systems.

My ship is holding up fine at this point, no damage taken. I look forward to reaching the edge of the core, as I want to visit a lot of the nebulae that surround.

For now though, the objective is Lagoon. I believe I will make it in a few days time.

Not much more to say this time thanks to the technical issues I had suffered.

How is Charles getting on?

Charles is doing pretty well, thanks for asking.

He saw his first close binary system yesterday. I pooped my pants; he just took it like a man.

This thread needs an update to the title. I'm gonna' ask a mod' to change it for me. :D

Trust me, you'll love it.

I didn't realise you left DW! Best of luck in your search Alicorn - maybe see you in the black.

Yeah man, thanks. I'm flying in the Kamzel group again for it... Didn't want to take any chances after the Mobius infiltration. :( (This time my ship is completely unarmed & the shields are barely stronger than that of an E-rated Sidewinder Mk I.)

Day 15

I've arrived back at human civilisation after making a tremendous discovery.

I found an ELW that matches the way Germanica describes her home to me.

"A land of eternal Spring, where the unicorns live in everlasting peace, on an island kingdom, under the brightest stars of the cosmos..."

Well, a couple hundred lightyears outside the Lagoon nebula, I stumbled across a world bearing a striking resemblance to her description. First, the stars. Near the Lagoon nebula, is a pillar of very bright stars visible for many a lightyear away. "Under the brightest stars of the cosmos..."

Secondly, the pictures. Look at the land. Nothing but tiny islands:

TVSKOTU1.pngTVSKOTU2.png

"On an island kingdom..."

With the islands being where they are, and the lush green that they are, I like to think that an eternal Spring exists here.

The star was similar to Sol, too.

But the best thing, this world was unclaimed.

I rushed back to the bubble, hours of tough flight put in, just to get my name on this most magnificent of worlds.

I succeeded.

LakumaKOTUTagged.png

I hereby consider the system a representation of the fabled land that means so much to me, and NGC 6530 SECTOR ZZ-Y D107 4 shall be, to me, The Kingdom Of The Unicorns.

I landed at Quince, station Millerport, to sell my data. To my surprise it was a palm tree station. An interesting end to a brief but glorious expedition.

TVSQuince.png

I no longer feel in any rush to discover anything in particular, to get my name on anything. I have my special place in the galaxy, and that, that I can call a successful mission.

Next time I head out, I can head out knowing that I have the one thing that matters to me.

Thanks for reading, fellow commanders.

Oh, Charles. I'll be getting him a wife bobblehead as soon as I am able. He's been with me for the whole journey, and now he deserves a reward. :)

~Captain Alicorn Harris, "The Vagrant Shetland", calling in to say: "Mission complete."
