The Short Road To Nowhere

Despite the title, this is a long story. I made Elite in exploration about a week ago and decided to buy an Anaconda. Plenty of money laying around waiting to be spent. Bought it and spent almost a week outfitting and engineering it. Got it up over 50LY jumps, could get it higher but I'm not a fan of digging up mats to work the engineers. Took a test flight out to Betelgeuse and back and am quite happy with the performance. Decided to set off for AG Carinae, about 17000LY out, nice little expedition. Never been West before so should be new ground. I noticed in test trials that I had problems leaving the stations because I can easily make it through the slot but my tail end gets caught in the grill of the station. Remedy, fly faster out. Off I go, just about to the slot, ready to raise landing gear and shoot the slot and an Asp pops up in front of me. I slam the throttle into full reverse. I barely miss the Asp as it just sits in my path and the station is giving me warnings for dangerous flying. It clears and I boost through, easily clearing the grill. Omen, number 1. I line up with my first jump, throttle up, hit J and as Frame Shift Drive is charging I hear a Viper coming full speed from my Aft Starboard side and it slams me. A slight jolt, Viper is spinning away behind me but a new test is passed. I didn't get damage and I didn't lose any shield. Omen, number 2. I managed to fly about 300 LYs and then for some odd reason, I've never carried heat sinks before but I did this time and my finger must have accidentally grazed the launcher button. Lesson learned, remap the heat sinks. Omen, number 3. A couple systems later I came across a Y brown dwarf. Sometimes I don't get those drop out lines, I think it's a bug. Anywho, of course I didn't aim far enough away from the star and emergency dropped. Lost 2% hull and 2% on most modules. Omen, number 4. Bad night, I will hunker down for the night and start back up tomorrow. Back in the ship in the afternoon, fine flying for about 300LY then I decide to turn unnecessary modules off. Going through them all, everything looks good but something ain't quite right. My buggy hangar isn't there. I don't know where it is but I know where it isn't. It ain't on my ship. Omen, number 5. I'm a sailor at heart and these were too many omens for me, I turned back. headed to Jameson Memorial and made it without any further problems. Sold my data for 2M CR, repaired, and rebought my buggy hangar. Now I'm not sure if I should try to head off to AG Carinae again or head somewhere else. That trip seems spooked but I think I'm going to try to do it again anyway.

Yep. Always heed the omens.

At the beginning of my Cassiopeia expedition last November I got about 4,000 light-years out when I realized I hadn't packed an AFMU. This was my big omen for what was to come. After completing the expedition I circled back to the Formidine Rift because things were heating up out there after the CoR exploration CG. Meanwhile I received a new HOTAS as a Christmas gift. I was one of the first persons on-site when the EAFOTS abandoned settlement sites came online after a bug fix. I was already low on hull but the default bindings on the new HOTAS placed "boost" and "reverse throttle" right next to each other. Instead of coming to a stop outside the settlement I plowed straight into the planet surface.

Friedenreich: She definitely has a name. It's "Willin'", named for the Little Feat song. It's the perfect song for anyone who does long distance travelling.

Jaiotu: I feel your pain. When the galaxy tells you it's not a good idea, it's not a good idea.

NorMonsta: I had never even considered that possibility. I will look into it ASAP. Thanks for your input.
