i got mine when i hit 9 and did my first communion. a catholic thing, all together with first confession (which i completely made up btw), it was supposed to make you an 'adult', so you got a tie and a watch to wear (and a crucifix, go figure). i wore mine with a sort of puerile proud for a while, until it broke. it was a plain watch with a textile band, striped blue - deep red - blue.
that i remember, i got two watches after that. one was a shiny metal seiko i got for birthday, submersible (big deal back then!). i can testify it was indeed submersible but it anyway broke too. the other was a golden one which had belonged to my father, don't remember the brand. i should still have it shelved somewhere but not really sure. anyway, i soon lost interest in those things in my teens. ironically, i ended contemplating that 'maturity symbol' as a childish thing. reactive much!

anyway most of my life i have been ... watchless!
