The Sidewinder-SRV-Explorer Challenge

I was planning my next exploration trip, and was originally intending to take my trusty Type 7 which had served me so well in the past, with its internals for everything you'd ever want and a jump range somewhere around 22-24 light years depending on final load out number of SRVs and cargo space.

However with the debates in the Beta forums over what an Explorer needs, I have decided that instead I will take a Sidewinder outfitted as follows
[standard D rating on all modules but FSD which is an A]
Class 2D Planetary Vehicle Hanger with Scarab
Class 2A Fuel Scoop
Advanced Discovery Scanner
2 Ton Cargo Rack

Giving a final jump range of ~18ly empty and ~17ly Laden

The mission will be to locate deep space planetary salvage, ideally Meta-metals, and return, and complete the last 50% of Pioneer rank to reach Elite.

No Detailed surface scanner means less info on the planets but they still can be level 2 scanned.
No AFMU means no repairs to anything as we go.
No shields means landings will be limited to 0.5g worlds only, unless I plan on taking Hull damage

I plan to leave second week of January with what ever materials I might have obtain prior to that, but with the note that I will be out in the real world away from my PC, and power in general, from the 18th to the 5th.

I'll use this thread to post updates, finds, and results or an insurance screen, which ever comes first

Sidewinder Mk.I Naval scout for the win

ah. another member of the sidey fan-club...welcome Cmdr.

I look forward to hearing about your adventures in a sidey!!

I must warn you that given current flight mechanics in the beta, I would give you 50/50 odds of taking hull damage when landing on even 0.1g planets. I don't believe long term planetary exploration is possible without shields unless Frontier overhauls damage taken on landing. Also PVHs come in grades H and G, with G being the lighter option.

I have landed all my ships without damage. I have made some large mistakes...but those were my fault and not the mechanics...rushing an Anaconda to the bottom of a canyon was not my smartest move. <shrug>

Ship is outfitted,

2 Million CR but 1.5 million of that is the Advanced Discovery scanner alone

just need to gather some materials before heading out

Initial Route planning

Assumptions
Assuming the Artifacts are the same meta-alloys

We know they are found in certain regions of space, recently discovered.

So we return to what does region mean again. [edt] Actually parts of space but it is also a plural,

"They are easily machined, but as yet cannot be manufactured, only found in space. They are associated with recently discovered alien entities nicknamed 'Large Barnacles' by interstellar explorers"

I feel once again these regions wont be too far from the bubble, as NPCs dont travel far (ie Players are the intrepid explorers of the FSD and Fast Jump era)
Four Areas come to mind to check
- the California nebula, as it was in the Wings trailer.
NGC 7822 a near by collection of O stars, IIRC - High energy hot worlds for "cell like" metal alloys to develop? "They are cellular in nature, and formed organically"
And two other locations
HIP 5100 - WR star - unknown if has land-ables
NGC 4463 SECTOR RY-R E4-5 - Planetary Nebula - unknown if has land-ables

Planetary nebulae over neutron stars white dwarf and black holes in general as the presence of the PN suggest the relatively newness of the Nova

As they are "technically" alloys then they are in part, if not completely, metals so both types of metalic worlds seem to be the place to go

Route
HIP 5100 - WR star - unknown if has land-ables
HIP 13736 - O class - unknown if has land-ables
HIP 1215 B 3 - Near by Binary T-Tauri probably just for the view
HIP 18390 - near California Nebula - lots o Landbales
California Nebula

NGC 4463 SECTOR RY-R E4-5 - Planetary Nebula - unknown if has land-ables

HIP 95924 - B class star in proto star cloud - unknown if has land-ables

NGC 7822 Nebula

Not sure beyond this point

Could you share your destinations with me? I fly a black type 6 with the same jump range. It has a load out very similar to yours, minus the scanner. As I still have over 90 tons of cargo capacity, I could load up on those meta-materials if we find them.

Planned searching points in post two above, no guarantees meta-alloys will be found at any of them however.
All just my own theories on where to look.

I will also be away from PC until the new year so you might get quite a head start :)

Had a few hours so started the journey

Portents for the future?
For the size of the debirs cloud you can see an Anaconda and Asp in the area scooping up the escape pods

I am not saying what you're claiming is impossible, but could you post a video showing your technique and walking us through it step by step? Even my most pillowy landings on the smoothest and most level surfaces have incurred a 1% penalty to hull, even in 0.08g.

Also, what is your controller setup?

A Metal world around an A class star provided with last of the cadmium and Vanadium to allow for two 50% FSD boosts should they be needed

Quite Eery switching everything off and listing to the Gas Giant Col 285 Sector HN-S C4-26 A 11 B orbits as it rises

Well successfully investigated

HIP 5100 - WR star - one landable

Screenshot_0720.png

HIP 13736 - O class - no landables just black holes

Found a lot of FSD materials for 5 50% boosts from HIP 6841 7, 1% hull damage though as the planet was 1.52g

Plenty of other landings along the way collecting all materials but Polonium Technetium & Tellerium

No Meta-Alloys though

Unfortunately it all came to an end when I checked out a Salvageable wreck and found a large survey data cache, and since I was crossing by human space to head out to Gamma Velorum or the area around the permit locked section, I figure could stop in and land at a planet side base.

Bad idea

Got the AMD Windows 10 SC slow down in frame rate and lost control, ended up with 5 frames per second upside down and clipped partially in the landing pad; could not recover and repeatedly suffering damage until dead, do not think shields would have helped

If I was to do it again, I would probably upgrade the Ships Engines to A2 for better handing planetside

Oh man, that sucks! Sorry to hear that.

Would love to meet you out in the black in a sidey...are you trying again?
