Hardware & Technical The Sony VR Headset discussion thread

People are born to choose as they please from whichever platform they desire that fits their needs, budget and preference. No one platform is better than any other, it's all a matter of taste.

Fanboyism of any flavour is simply silly and just reeks of playground puerility.

If the Sony VR is any good I might get one. If the Rift is any good I might get one. I'm not going to pick one and scream nonsense about the other because I don't have it.

Exactly, that has been my view all along.

Shame you can't get one unit to use on both!

eg: Imagine if the Morpheus could be used on the PC too!

It does magically upgrade over time. Through software, its brilliant and free.
No. It doesn't. It really doesn't. Programmers just learn to use the SAME hardware more efficiently by writing friendlier code.

There is official competition with Oculus, Sony have stated this on record. They have said it is friendly.

You seem to think a person is born to either have a PC or PS4, and you think there is nothing you can do to change this? If Sony markets a great product, someone who may have gone for a PC and Oculus Rift, maybe persuaded to get a PS4 and Morpheus instead, Sony takes market share of VR, that is simple business competition.
I do not think anyone is 'born to either have a PC or PS4' - that's utterly ridiculous. They are merely tools, like a hammer or a screwdriver. In this context they are entertainment platforms, and the one that suits me is the one that gives me most flexibility/power for an acceptable price.

Unlikely - didn't Sony build in security handshaking over USB to prevent 'unauthorised' peripherals on the PS4? Entirely expect it to be the same with their HMD.

Shame! Would be a hell of a feather in a manufacturers cap if their device could be used on someone's PS4 and PC! Would entice a lot interest I suspect!

Indeed - the hardware should work on anything you want to plug it into. It's simply corporate gree.. urm, companies ensuring a great customer experience, that won't allow it at the driver/handshake level.

It's really quite sad, but it happens with everything.

Sony are saying for now its PS4 only.
They have alluded to other platforms and usages, bit not now.
Extending their loss making hardware business model, which they have done with PS3 and with PS4. They can compete with Oculus by selling Morpheus at a loss. At some point in the future the cost price will come down and they may break even or small profit from the hardware, at that point they could allow it to run on PC.
It's not greed. If PC was a business, which it isnt, it's not owned or generates profit through licensing then it would also block its hardware from other platform use.

The entire point of the IBM PC was to have an open standard, until the arrival of the PS2 and MCA.

That's why software was specifically listed as PC and compatibles.

IBM lost the PC market to Compaq early on, ended up selling it's PC and later server lines to Lenovo.

IBM mostly makes it's money on big iron these days, (mainframe and licensing) and patent royalties.

Sony's Morpheus virtual reality helmet set for 2016 launch

Looks as if thinks VR related are shifting up a gear.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-31723030?ocid=socialflow_facebook

Sony has revealed an upgraded version of its virtual reality helmet, which it says it plans to put on sale in 2016.The new edition of Project Morpheus now features an OLED display, rather than an LCD one, letting it show more vibrant colours. That brings it in line with Facebook's rival Oculus Rift.
It is also capable of showing graphics at 120 frames per second (fps).
That beats the figure given by HTC for its recently unveiled Vive virtual reality (VR) headset.
The frame rate is important as the higher the number, the smoother moving objects appear. It also reduces the risk of nausea.
HTC said on Sunday that its helmet provided a refresh rate of 90fps.
Oculus has not confirmed its specifications, but recent demonstrations of the recent Crescent Bay version of its kit have also been reported to run at 90fps.

However you look at it, VR I'd say is here to stay and will only get better and better.

It's all coming together, about 6 months later than I hoped though. I will have to be patient for my first go on Elite, and in VR on my PS4. I still think Elite will be out this year on PS4, shortly after the mac version.

Resolution is too low for a consumer product IMHO. Both Oculus and the HTC/Valve ones will be higher. Also the story says -

However, speaking at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, PlayStation executive Shuhei Yoshida revealed that a software update would allow the machine to create an "in-between frame" to double its current maximum of 60fps.

- so basically an interpolated frame rather than a true 120, something like Timewarp on the Rift for lower spec machines. It won't trouble high spec PCs for quality, just as we all (except Beachlight) thought. ;) And it'll be out after both of those. Bit of a damp squib really.

But it will be true 120fps on the PS5, which could follow the launch of Morpheus just a couple of years later.

That relates to Xbox announcement, not PS4, Microsoft have not announced a lifetime exclusive. I still expect Elite PS4 this year. It would be madness not to. It's possible Microsoft may have purchased at great expense of millions a 6 month release lead, which is annoying and of course i am disappointed if Frontier have agreed that deal. Xbox version out in summer 2015, December PS4 release hopeful.. Or maybe Sony will release Morpheus boxed with Elite Dangerous. Frontier supports VR, Sony are doing it, Microsoft are behind.
