The Star Wars Old Republic Thread

I downloaded Star Wars: The Old Republic (25GB )
I then had to look up and fix the launcher, which wouldn't launch properly
I went to sleep last night leaving it downloading (again)
I woke and clicked on Play
My monitor then said "Out Of Range"
I had to restart Win 7
Then my monitor started saying "Out Of Range" when the desktop came up
I spent an hour trying to fix that
I then uninstalled Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Doesn't look that great to be honest, certainly not a patch on what Frontier have shown so far.

Its probably a slightly unfair comparison, as space combat is not the core gameplay experience in SWTOR. It is inherently a traditional MMO, and a very good one in my opinion.

I haven't played it since it went free-to-play, but I really enjoyed my time with it and although it wasn't the revolution in MMOs that perhaps people were expecting it to be, it managed to do a lot of things right- not least managing to make 'the grind' something that was actually engaging and fun. Something that has historically proved extremely difficult to accomplish.

Basically if you're purely interested in space combat I imagine you'll be underwhelmed when comparing it to straight space-sims. But if you're interested in an engaging MMORPG, set in a familiar galaxy, that has been well realised- you can do a lot worse!

I haven't played since it went pay-to-play. ;) I was only in during the beta testing and I must say I got rather fed up with the grind for each of the classes when I had to rinse and repeat it quite often (since new versions wiped previous characters off the plate). The space battles were a _huge_ disappointment back then. The ship just flew on a predetermined path and you had to shoot at stuff. I don't know if they ever improved it in later updates, but this new trailer seems to promise at least something better.

:D
This made me laugh because I know the feeling, thanks.

As a huge Star Wars fan I was so looking forward to SWtor when it was first announced, my SW Galaxies Guild decided en masse to join and stay together afterthe demise of Galaxies. What a massive disapointment it turned out to be. Mostly because of the quest system. You have to listen to the interminabley aweful quest giver speech with no option to turn it off and just accept the mission and kill stuff, I never got a toon past lvl 10

I have to admit that I really enjoy Star Wars The Old Republic, however I play it for the class story lines and engaging (compared to other MMO's I've played) group content rather than the ground breaking mechanics we all were originally hoping for...
