Steam has about 75 percent of the PC games we play connected to the Internet. Who owns Steam? Someone called Valve. Who are they? Should we worry?

Thankfully didn't have to download it twice either as I initially thought.

... meanwhile, some other dude with a pirated copy of the same game, simply installs, double clicks the shortcut icon and starts playing immediately. No mandatory registration, no confirmation links, no authorizing devices, no personal data involved, etc.

Not wanting to promote piracy, but this reminds me of the time when people purchased 30$ DVDs to see a movie. They inserted the disc into the DVD player, then had to sit through various commercials, then menu animations, then to add insult to injury they had to watch a long, annoying video about how pirating movies was a crime... on the DVD they legally bought! Meanwhile, some other dude just next door downloaded the same movie from pirate bay, then double clicked the file icon and immediately started watching.
