This actually makes me quite sad.

The gaming world just lost a unique product that to the best of my knowledge, has no alternative.

I own a Steam Controller, have so for years.

What makes it special is the stupid amount of customisation it offers. No other gamepad has as many options as the Steam Controller.

All these controllers with interchangeable sticks, adjustable triggers, and crap like that... Still basically regular controllers.

Steam Controller on the other hand is basically a mouse and keyboard condensed into a gaming-friendly format that can be used anywhere.

RIP old friend. You were the best gamepad ever, despite what the haters who didn't actually ever use you say.

I've used it. It's very meh, being generous. It wasn't as good at being a controller as other controllers, and it's nowhere near as functional and versatile as m+kb. It had some advantages. Strategy games and games where you need cursor were slightly more bearable with it than on a regular controller. That's about only good thing I could find. Not to mention how desperately cheap it feels. Like a Chinese knock-off of itself in a way. I wish they'd stick with the idea and actually developed it into something great.

I disagree completely. It's lasted much longer than any of my Xbox controllers, as in basically still new-quality, the customisation afforded by Steam is awesome, and just in general, I freaking love using it.

A lot of the profiles I've made on the Steam Controller simply aren't possible on an Xbox controller.

As for the comparison to real M&K, you're right. M&K is better. But Steam Controller is much closer to M&K than Xbox controller is.

Yes, it is closer to M+K than conventional controllers. I just really didn't find it all that useful. As for durability - you be the judge, since I've not had experience of using it for a long time. I had it for like a week, I borrowed it. But it just felt very cheap in the hand. That polished piano-key plastic is just an atrocious choice for a device panels overall these days.
It's good some people liked it, I wouldn't mind them bringing a new version. Maybe this time with some better materials, and improved ergonomics.

I guess different people have different opinions what defines "cheap feeling".

For some it's "cheap" because it uses plain old plastic, such as is indeed the case with the Steam Controller.

For other people though, myself included, we define cheapness not by the materials used, But by how well put together it is from those materials.

The fact is my Steam Controller has lasted much longer than any Xbox pad, including an Elite. In fact my Steam Controller still feels new. Dusty but otherwise perfect.

YMMV of course but by my standards, the Steam Controller is much more well built than the mainstream options.

I like it a lot. I don't use it exclusively as I prefer the second analog stick for third person camera-control games like Dark Souls for example, but it's pretty neat otherwise. I'm annoyed I was abroad when this came up though, as I'd have liked to pick up a couple more for when my current one breaks down at some point.

I use my Xbox Gamepad for its plug n play ability. The Steam controller looked quite interesting when it was released, but I didn't really need something that customisable.
Just something to slap in a USB port and go, or use KB+M for everything else.

Apparently Valve have put in patents for new controller designs.

Hopefully the concept isn't dead.

It takes a fair amount of getting used to, but once you do, it's brilliant. Better than any other gamepad out there IMO.

I don't think enough people gave themselves enough of a chance to adjust to & learn it properly. :(
