THE STORY OF BAST

Hi CMDRs,

Recent CommunityGoal to deliver Ceremonial Heike Tea to Wilkes Orbital in Nespelevein order to cure Professor Palin and the members of his research teamsaw a big commitment of the community, people giving away Heike Teato larger hauler to speed up the delivery flow.
Whenever thecommunity is asked of why such a commitment, the response is alwaysthe same : because of Bast, never again.

It's hard forthose who did not participate in Bast CG to understand why searchfear of Bast.
It was bad,really bad.
The CerberusPlague was developping exponentially and several systems were alreadyunder quarantine, no landing allowed and lots of stored ships gottrapped.

The community putan immense effort to try and cure one system and its station –Bast, Hart Station– through a single-Tier Community Goal with novisibility on the tonnage required nor the payout, selling at a lossfor shortest-efficient routes, no Cutter available at that time, andrelying mostly on ships like pythons (money was not as easy to earnas it is now in ED).
To add to thedramatic events, lots of pirates where running the skies of Bast. Some people turned into white knights to protect the traders, all ina formidable community effort.
The outcome ofthis CG was a success and the turning point to stop and cure thePlague, however the community got mixed reactions due to poor payout. For some, the deception was as high as the effort they put in thisCG.

765 peopletook part in this nightmare, 765 people that are now known as theBast-Hart's.

To get a sense ofthis epic CG moment, I gathered few quotes from the forum thread« Active Community Goals Thread #2 » run by Brokenstormat the time. I serve to you this story below in SPOILER quotes.

Newsof fresh cases of the Cerberus Plague has caused mass panic among thepopulations of Shepherd Hub in the Bastes System, Yegorov Station inthe Maheou Ti system and Roddenberry Gateway in the Ochoeng system.Even though the number of cases reported so far is relatively low,the medical services and hospitals have been overwhelmed by citizensdesperate for treatment, despite not being infected.

Stationauthorities have appealed for calm and restricted movement to onlythe most essential travel. States of emergency have been declared andopen contracts for urgent medical and aid supplies are being issuedfor these systems.

CerberusPlague Outbreaks in the Bast, Una and Santjalan Systems

Reportsthat the Cerberus Plague has reached Hart Station in the Bast system,Hoard Orbital in the Una system and Cantor Terminal in the Santjalansystem is causing fear amongst the population. So far a cure hasn’tbeen found for this disease despite the continuing work of CarlSimmons, the Chief Medical Officer of Newton Dock, and medical teamsin the surrounding systems. In a statement he reiterated that peopleshould remain at home.

Hospitalsand care facilities in these systems are already overloaded as thenumber of infected people rapidly rises. Volunteers and localsecurity personnel are aiding the health services in managing thecrisis as well as trying to maintain the rule of law.

Anypilots in the region are being called upon to help deliver medicalaid to the affected starports.

So,we have now 6 CGs with the same flavor as the previous ones which hadno way to succeed?

HartStation in the Bast system
HoardOrbital in the Una system
CantorTerminal in the Santjalan system
ShepherdHub in the Bastes System
YegorovStation in the Maheou Ti system
RoddenberryGateway in the Ochoeng system

Ifone CG succeeds, do we save the station or create a cure to save themall?
Ifit's all about a cure then we should focus on only one ofthem...anyway, if it's only about the reward upon completion, weshould focus on one of them only...

So,now, may we decide on which of them we should focus? ;)

Sooooooooo, let me get this straight, last week, the CG was 3 stations withinsanely high requrements, all failed, and people had to deal withgankers and griefers killing them. So this week, to further enragethe community, now they have SIX CGs with the same stupidly highrequirements, which will have the same idiotic result? FDevs, you doknow that the definition of insanity is to keep doing the same thingover and over again, and expect a different result, right? Becausethis is insanely idiotic...

Idid a quick survey of all 6 infected systems. Here's what I found:
1.Bast - Hart Station is 204ls from entry, has lots of high techsystems nearby, is in the middle of those high tech systems
2.Una - Hoard Orbital is 2196ls from entry, has some high tech systemsnearby, is on the edge of those high tech systems
3.Santjalan - Cantor Terminal is 451ls from entry, has average numberof high tech systems nearby, is on the edge of those high techsystems
4.Maheou Ti - Yegorov Station is 920ls from entry, has lots of hightech systems nearby, is in the middle of those high tech systems
5.Ochoeng - Roddenberry Gateway is 484ls from entry, has some high techsystems nearby, is on the edge of those high tech systems
6.Bastes - Shepherd Hub is 1601ls from entry, has some high techsystems nearby, is on the edge of those high tech systems.
.
Basedon this, Bast has the shortest entry distance, offers a high supplyof medicines from all directions around it. I highly recommend thatwe focus on Bast. The entry point makes for faster trade routes andthe high supply gives us the best chance of not running out.

Completingany of the current CGs should lead to the creation of a cure, to savethem all...
Andas per the previous experience, I doubt we can complete more than oneCG if we do not focus on one only.
So,except if somebody has a better argument than what has already beensaid...
BRING ALL THE MEDS. FOCUS ON BAST !

AlertAlert! Medical Emergency , All independant pilots.
Recapon last week or so. Situation report as follows.
Recentoutbreaks as follows, outbreaks last week or so spread from bd-024304. Situation has become dependant on success of CG's . Failure ofCG's no bonus. This goes for bounty hunting pirates as well asmedical runs.
Thelack of completion of bd-02 4304 allowed the Cerberus Plague tospread beyond containment. Spreading to Dajoar,Eleu,20 Ophiuchi.Failure to contain the outbreak due to lack of coordination andpirate intervension helped spread the plague and put Independentpilots from contributing as profit could be found elsewhere. This haslead to the outbreak spreading to far worse effect.
CurrentlyDajoar,Eleu and 20 Ophiuchi are in total quarantine. Ships and raregoods.

Assessmentof situation. Virus will overcome humanity due to overwhelming ofsupplies and lack of focus. No rewards and failure.
Unfortunatlymany will have to be sacrificed if there is to be hope. Now we have 6outbreak sytstems and could be overrun quickly if the outbreaks areallowed to triplicate and mutate. Action must be taken, butcoordinated if there is to be success.
Wehave a week to try to find a solution and time is of theupmost.
Ratherthan spliting our resources we are trying to focus on curing onesystem, Maybe with that we could learn how to deal more effectivelywith the other outbreaks, splitting our objectives we split ourchances further against a deadly virus.
Sofar we have few contributors through the 6 systems, with mostconcentrating on curing Bast.
5times the contributors so far to Bast. 20 on average so far over 5 ofthe systems,, i assume like myself signed up to monitor theoutbreak.
Majorityof Cmdrs helping so far 105 now as of present time, focusing on thesystem of 'BAST' for numerous reasons
wehave a week to really throw everything at this. as well as recruitingmore CMDRs to the cause. If we all focus towards one goal, as acommunity.
thereis a chance if we can find a solution and remedy to this plague, which we hope could assist in curing the other systems. Split towardsdifferent goals we lessen our chances of success and reward.

Reasonsfor Bast over other outbreaks.
Shorttrip to delivery at staion 200ls from jump in point. Should piratesdecide to appear,
ias well as other CMDRs have battle ready ships to occupy them anddistract them leaving transports to easily arrive safely. ( pleasepost any pirate activity and i will try to keep them occupied.)

Manynearby systems with high tech systems which can supply the medicinesneeded. All Medicine types are valid Agri-medicines,basicmeds,performance enhancers and progenitor cells. Bring as muchtonnage as you can.
LHS1663 7.52 ly Frobisher City 440 LS from jump in.
platforms..O'Donnel gateway 651 ls Bulychev holdings 1170 ls
BD+7558 8.8 ly Stephenson Station 1725 LS
ALRAI14.04 ly Bounds Hub 1070 LS
Theseare the closest,, many more nearby for those with better jump range,,will take supply management. If you have the range,, grab fromfurther and leave closer ones for the short range Cmdrs.

Ifwe can cure one we can do more, we make this our goal as we can allget rewarded, in fame and money. What we get unknown so far dependingon how we do, but not impossible if we coordinate.
Personallyfinding the reward would be nice,, maybe a % of their sales profitssince they have many rare goods,, we dont want to lose these or traderoutes. but really,,, i'd be happy to save the Universe and get aflashing Blue light,.,, ! honestly,, if i had a flashing blue light,,and maybe didnt have to request docking permission since i was somespecial plague ambulance, it would be worth it. :D.
Goodluck CMDRS. and lets do this

Ijust finished delivering 1.1K tons to Bast which put me in top 40%. Imeasured the progress bar and noted 3% total progress for 77K tons. That's means 2.5M tons are needed to complete the goal. Ifparticipation is the same as today, then we'll only hit about 21% ofthe goal. Rather discouraging, especially considering the best I wasable to earn was 300cr/ton with Tea and 700cr/ton with ProgenitorCells every 10 min. Since I normally make 4 to 5 times that with thesame ship, this isn't profitable by any stretch. I'll try this onemore night to see if the participation climbs before deciding whetherto bail on this goal.

I'd really appreciate it ifsomeone could cleave him in twain. He's worth at least 250K bounty, Ibelieve. He's just smashed up my T7 with 200 Agri-meds on board, simply because I wasn't fast enough dumping 40 for him (I was tryingto negotiate for 30, he smacked me and damaged me so much my cargohold door failed), then he took me apart. Ijust checked and the CG is still there. And I must say that everyoneis doing a fantastic job because less than 4 hours ago, the progresswas 5.7% in 17% of the week. Now it is up to 7.9% in 19% of the week(0.42). So, the ratio of (%CompletedTons)/(%CompletedDuration)changed from 0.34 to 0.42. When the ratio hits 1.0 and stays aboveit, that means that we will finish on time.
.
Thisweekend, I should be able to bring in much more. If you're havingtrouble finding profitable trades for both directions, post to thisthread and I'll help find you some profitable trade routes.
.
Let'shold the line at Bast to stop the spread of the plague. Perhaps FDwill use it in the storyline to save us from the plague.

Ifthis one fails, with the numbers, and numbing work that has beendone, I think a LOT of people are going to give up on the plague CGsaltogether. I know I will definitely send a rather spicy bug reportabout it if this one fails, because the devs really need to get aclue. Someone about a page or so ago said that the grind for this wasso bad that going to work was preferable. FD needs to think aboutthat, because people play games to have fun, not to feel like theyare at work, and if a comment like that wee to get out in to thegeneral gamer community, that this game felt like work, you wouldwatch it die very quickly. And as far as locking ships into plaguestation, that is TOTAL awesome. People have money and time investedin those ships, and to just, without warning, take their property isa bunch of awesome. If I was one of those people, I would bespreading the word far and wide about it. Immersion is one thing, screwing people over is another.

Itseems the pirate situation has improved a bit. The wing I was talkingabout earlier seems to be scared away after suffering large damageand losing one of their ships. I have also seen a certain Bakeryproduct related CMDR around. He has a nice fat bounty of just over300k for any interested bounty hunters.
Besidesthe bakery CMDR, I think space is quiet enough for traders to havefun in Bast-open-Play en-masse. Merry trading!

I'mover 40k delivered in a python so I'll let you do the math there. Iwant to see the end to the Plague and to move the story along. I alsohope FD learns from this and makes future CGs easier or at least moreprofitable to get more players involved. I won't mount this kind ofeffort again.

Whatreally annoys me are self important people coming on here and tellingme and others how they should feel. If someone is angry, they areangry, if they feel let down they feel let down. You can't tellpeople how to feel. It's why saying "Calm down" to an irateperson is the worst thing you can do. If someone is angry and wantsto complain the best thing to do is let them, let them get it out oftheir system and they calm down themselves. After tomorrow some ofthese really angry people will have had their say and moved on. I'mnot particularly disappointed by the reward, I had a great time I metsome nice Cmdrs and had a bit of a giggle with them. But whether Ifeel angry or not, don't tell me how to feel!

Well, after a good sleep, I'm not as mad as before... Come to think of it,I don't even need such a big reward.

AllI want (and I'm sure all the Saviors of Bast would agree with me onthat) is a huge Galnet headline: "The cure for Cerberus Plagueis finally found!" Meaning that there would be no more "deliver2.5Mtons of meds for almost nothing" CGs. Locked systems getunlocked, plagued systems get cured, and all of us can climb intotheir fighters and go for some BH CG. At least these are quiteprofitable even without huge awards.

There'sno escape from the Bast'd place!

Description:
Todate, the Cerberus Plague has devastated several systems and claimedthousands of lives. The only hope of eliminating the disease, andcurtailing further spread, is to develop as many doses of the cure aspossible. To further this aim, the Union Of Bast Liberals is offeringa series of incentives to pilots who take Ceremonial Heike Tea fromthe Brunel City Station in Heike, to the Hart Station market untilsuch time as the Cerberus crisis has beenhalted.

System: Bast
Station: HartStation
Objective: SellCeremonial Heike Tea to Hart Station
How: Buyfrom Brunel City Station in Heike

TO BECONTINUED...

So glad to read this story again, so many familiar names, some of them I still see in the game today.

Those were the times. I must say I was pretty impressed by the last Heike CG, where a few Bast vets gathered to help the new generation. New tactics that were in their infancy at the time are now commonly used and I was proud to see how hard we pushed (almost to tier 3 !).
And yet, Bast still holds a special place in my gametime memory.

Hope you'll post more, especially the end of the CG and the Heike followup: such joy and glory ! ;-)

Bast was amazing, and the best part is that because it was a Rares CG with very small amounts available at a time anyone could take part. I got into the top 15% in my trusty DBS, which is not exactly a T9 when it comes to cargo space. According to the station's description there's a plaque with all our names in it, maybe when we get spacelegs we'll see it.

Being out exploring, I missed the fact that Prof .Palin needed Ceremonial Heike, so Cerberus Plague? wow, thanks for putting this together

Because of Bast, never again!

Thanks for the memory :D

Yeah, helped to complete part 1 & part 2 in my Cobra at the time. Was an epic CG. I agree with the sentiment above that it really felt like a 'community' goal. Some of the Herculean efforts made by others at the time shouldn't be understated!

I came in to CG participation right at the end of that whole Bast fiasco moving tea from Heike the first time. The biggest loses from the Cerberus plague CGs were not to stations, it was the commanders that gave up almost entirely on doing CGs since then and haven't been seen around the Active CGs thread much since. Unfortunately CG reward structures still don't make much sense and often feel more like a sick social experiment than a fun community event.

I was there I remember it all too well. I can't remember which system the first CG was in, just that it was a BD catalogue number. That one was an ordinary CG and we succeeded, at least in part. The next one was a few weeks later with 3 systems infected an also BH CGs running in parallel.

We really were at the lowest ebb. With too few pilots divided between 3 almost impossible goals and an additional 3 BH CGs it's not surprising that we failed. Late on in the CG we had decided to concentrate our efforts on saving Eleu but it was too little, too late. The real kicker came with the quarantines. Quite a few people had second ships trapped in the quarantined stations. That was the lead up to Bast. I think that if we had failed there, CGs might have been killed off entirely

It was great stuff the Bast, terrible at the time, but looking back and remembering how things were made a enjoyable read. + Rep.

Part 2 would be great if you add that. Heike Tea runs. I remember back and forth jumping in the little Diamondback explorer. 8 ton limit on the tea was the major limiting factor to success and took a good early start to the shipping.

Till this time most CG's was all about personal contribution, where you would be in the reward bracket and payouts. Hitting targets would be difficult but soon the community started working selflessly again.

Pickers and Shippers tactic started there. Cmdrs were waiting for their 8 spawn to then fill larger ships to transport. Much better efficiency and the tonnage being moved increased boosting the rewards for all.

Throughout the Cerberus plague outbreaks, the community pulled together for the greater good, and many friends were made.

A quite fascinating read tbh, and that is not at all sarcastic. I would be keen to read how things developed after this read. Thanks again Red,

The Hat :)

I've really fond memories of this. It was hard and many got angry with the pay off, or lack of it but the community spirit was amazing. Thank you for the memories

And that's when Class 2 MC's were born... Do we all remember?

You joined halfway through if you are talking about rares. That was heike tea, we were shipping meds before that. The rare bit was easy.

Bast was my first CG... got blown out more times that i do want to confess.a nd got frustrated like everyone... but also feelt motivated... WE had to save the galaxy!!!!!... it was incredible... is one of the most engaging times i had in this game!!!
