I followed the story when it started. I know the emperor got sick, nearly died then woke up. There seems to be some split in the imperial family. I've missed the whole powerplay thing and I'm not sure where to start. I've been plodding through the stories I missed on Galnet but this is slow progress. Does a summary exist, how can I learn what is going on out there?

Basically Sharon, who is the daughter of Dirty Den who was murdered by a bunch of daffodils, and the again by his second wife is now married to Phil. Phil being a two bit 'ard man like her dad and brother of her first husband Grant who is now going around the world looking for the hardest gangs or summit like that.

The best thing they have for a story is that the Emperor nearly died, which was supposed to create the Powerplay situation as people tried to become the new Emperor, but they scrapped that idea as they wanted to include other powers as well who aren't really doing anything that makes any sense (why are agents of the President/Shadow President of the Federation shooting down ships of Empire Senators without open war?). Now, the Emperor is recovering, which has no discernible effect on anything at all, powers still have no story behind any of them, the cold war between the major factions really doesn't make any sense, as you can simultaneously be ranked with the military of both sides, and the galaxy is largely static with no real changes happening anywhere. We did manage to find a few Unidentified Artifacts that seem to be some sort of homing beacons, and many systems are being hit with an unidentified plague, but both of those would indicate an external threat which would make powerplay make even less sense if it's created.

You don't vote for emperors or for kings, for that matter. They get their titles in some form of farcical water ceremony, as far as I know.

Imperial:
Emperor due to marry, his heir being a bit useless lead to speculation of another major player being the successor (Wiki quote: Harold, the current heir, quickly made a name for himself as a less playboy). Currently Aisling Duval is said to be the natural successor, however, Arissa claimed she was the Emperors illigitimate child and therefore the heir. If the marriage had/does take place then Arissa would theoretically have more of a claim than Aisling.
Emperor was sick, attempted assassination tracked by Arissa to HR 706 minor faction.
Patreus is said to be in an rumoured relationship with Aisling and opposed Arissa's attack on the HR 706 faction demanding evidence etc.
Has in the past opposed slavery similar to Aisling's principals yet used quite aggressive methods against anyone in debt to him.
Emperor has woken up from coma/sickness (14th July) yet has not yet been seen in public as far as we know. Expectations seem to be that the marriage will take place and a rift will occur with Aisling and Patreus on one side with Arissa and Zemina on the other. (Zemina Torval is a Senator like Patreus).

Federation:
Federation has opposed onionhead and other "illegal" items on multiple occasions. In the war President Halsey's forces destroyed a civilian ship and Admiral Vincent's burning of onionhead crops caused many civilian deaths and illnesses (noxious fumes).
President and VP go missing during hyperspace jump, no wreckage is found despite search. From evidence it seems the FSD had a massive failure.
Felicia Winters takes over as acting president, becomes Shadow President after a democratic vote puts Hudson in the power seat as President.
Other factions:
The Alliance has little direct stuff going on but is indirectly affected by other things. Mahon is the PM and it does not seem to be changing anytime soon with no other Alliance powerplay factions. Seems pre-occupied with holding Alliance together and trying to persuade other minor factions to join them.
Pirate faction (Archon Delaine) suffering from internal struggles and unrest with player groups leaving, said to still be on the rampage in many sectors expanding on a weekly basis despite other factions trying to wipe him out.
Li Yong-Rui - Profit based independant, no real activities beyond standard powerplay expansion/contraction.
Antal - Profit based independant, no real activities beyond standard powerplay expansion/contraction. Closest to dropping off powerplay spectrum. Some problems with expansions due to powerplay technical issues.. cough bugs cough....
Non-Political activities:
Unidentified artefact attacks ships when carried, being studied by Federals, Imperials and players. Check the forum thread for theories answers and everything else. Side-note the feds were accused of holidng back information on the UA's.
Very recently a station breaking plague has appeared with multiple community goals relating to an illness.

The big thing for me (because it's more "game" than "story") - in celebration of the Emperor's survival, Clippers and Couriers have been made available for purchase by us filthy commoners (a mere "serf" ranking is needed to obtain the ship, instead of "Baron").

I like semi-political space-opera/sci-fi (Vorkisagan series, etc), and I don't see any reason why it would be inherently impossible to tell that kind of story through Galnet articles (Dangerous-Liaisons style) but I agree with everyone here that the current approach just isn't working very well, if at all.
Overview information like what was eventually provided by Alex Bretnall's summary above needs to be on hand, clear, and easy to find. Especially if you're entering the story part-way through.
Galnet articles should be hyperlinked to each other so you can follow any aspect that catches you interest down into a Wikipedia-like rabbit-hole.
(Right now Galnet articles feel more like last century's dead newspaper articles archived on micro-fiche in a public library's records department.)

None of the story makes any sense as there are almost unlimited resources outside the tiny bubble of populated space easily accessible with the new fast hyperspace drive.
In fact the ease of travel should lead to fringe groups, religious cults, and the poor, just upping sticks and moving to the 'new world' - that would be a story and would give explorers other things to find.
