The subtle degrading of those little things..

I know we have mentioned and reported the problems/bugs/degrading of paint jobs, but here I want to focus on some other things we have paid for with our hard earned cash only for the various Odyssey Updates to promptly 'degrade'.

Bobbleheads! (which for what they are, weren't cheap!)

With just two of my bobbleheads as examples (there's more) ...See Below:..... in Horizons they were glistening chrome and high detail... but in Odyssey the 'lighting' bugs have degraded them into amorphous, bland and degraded shadows of their former selves. I really do hope they (along with dodgy paint jobs) haven't been deliberately and permanently DEGRADED in the pursuit of performance!! I am going to remove all my now degraded bobbleheads until such time as FDev return them to the quality we paid for!!!

The first image appears to have lost many of its pixels but I take your point the lack of shiny shiny also makes me sad.

The quality of my conversion from BMP to JPEG software leaves a little to be desired..(pixelated pix).....when you view the two examples in real time... the Horizons versions have much, much more detail and not so bright and washed-out. And the shiny shiny has definitely departed, and to my eye the Horizons examples are much more 'subtle' for want of a better word. I'd perhaps go as far as saying the Odyssey versions are achieving 8bit 16bit quality. o7

My Halloween skull bobblehead (not Billy Bones as you have there) has also lost the emissive eye and the glowing blue drooping skin bits in Odyssey...
Also the Lunar Hunter decal is no longer emissive

And it's also my understanding that the paint jobs in Odyssey are still messed up, are they not?

Some certainly are - as I don't have ALL of them, best you ask someone who does... Military sand is a bit dark, but as the remainder of my ships use paints that appear to have either had no issue or maybe have been fixed, I can't honestly make an informed comment. (most of my ships use Tactical Graphite or Corroded, which appears unchanged)

SRV paint jobs are entirely different between Horizons & Odyssey though.

I'v got the Planet set bobbleheads in all my Ships. Must admit I don't really notice much about how/if they look crap compared to Horizon's, 'cos I'v not loaded up Horizons since Odyssey launched nor have I any intention to do so.......my only comment on this set has always been - the Earth is rotating the wrong way on it's axis!
Looks OK in Odyssey though, so no complaints & if there are differences, I don't care.

Now the Azure paint job that I have/had on my Ships is being replaced as I can see that it's definitely not as good, particularly as I can see it from my 'Conda cockpit....& I don't like it's colour now.

Wouldn't go as far to say that I'd remove any of them, as I'v, in the Planet set, already paid for them! wouldn't even say that I won't buy anymore either as it's been 2-3 years since I bought one with cash.....I just save up my weekly ARX & use them instead. So far I'v over 18k saved ARX - which gives you an indication of how I view bobbleheads & paintjobs in Elite ;)

Yep.

  • Midnight Black is not matte anymore, and less deep black - looks more like Graphite now. I have probably around 20 of these, so this one really hurts for me.
  • Squadron PJs look more a dull grey than white, same for Tactical Ice.
  • Chromed has a different look ship vs shipkit parts. Very noticeable on my Krait Phantom which is why I no longer apply them. While the ship looks very reflective, the shipkits are more matte. In Horizons it's the same shader so the ship + kit look coherent.
  • Engine trails have less "volume", and on the Krait Mk2 are no longer 3 dimensional - they're 2D and move around depending on the camera angle.
  • I observed the same issues with the bobbleheads just like in the OP as I own most of those myself. Those were 6k+ each iirc.
  • Emissive decals don't work like they do in Horizons - look drab in Odyssey.
  • Triple Elite decal is no longer shiny nor golden in Odyssey - just matte and... yellow.
  • When applying parts of the Raider kit on the Cobra 3, it now prevents firing of the small hardpoints as they're in the way (tested this last night, works fine in Horizons) - likely because they made the ship kits 'solid' in Odyssey, but forgot to consider/test implications, as so often the case. So here the cosmetics have a real gameplay impact.
  • Fleet Carrier PJs - oh boy - I reckon about 80-90% are broken (you can easily see this without switching to Horizons - just look at the thumbnail vs the preview in the store section, most colours are misrepresented now). Something with the white balance perhaps no idea... where paints should be bright white, they're now a dull grey. One of my PJs changed from red to neon yellow, this was fixed but the grey issue still persists, so imagine - they put the time into correcting it, but still didn't do it properly.
  • Iridescent PJ on the SRV doesn't render correctly, and is missing entirely from parts of the model.
  • Azure is messed up still, it looks glorious in Horizons but the metallic effect is gone and it's much darker in EDO. But it was free so no biggie right...
  • Stygian PJ's seem to be fixed, interestingly those were some of the very few I actually preferred their "new" version in EDO for once. Oh well.

I can't think of any game that wrecked so many visual bits and bobs by releasing a DLC. The game continues to look really good in Horizons, but it's heartbreaking to see the downgrade in Odyssey, which is supposed to be the future for the game from a tech perspective.

The bottom line is, I bought hundreds of Euros worth of cosmetic items in the game that I used to enjoy but that I can't any longer - combined with the ongoing performance issues and lacklustre gameplay additions I'm thinking whether it's best for me to uninstall Odyssey and just stick to Horizons, until the 'lights go out' there also when it eventually gets rolled into the Odyssey client... unless of course FDev fix all these issues but quite frankly at the pace they're going at I probably stopped playing altogether by the time that happens. 🤷‍♂️

Such a shame really it came to this. But I don't see a lot of threads about this (and those that do die out pretty quickly) and the issue tracker doesn't help either, so given Frontier are taking a reactive approach to fixing issues these are probably at the bottom of the (massive) pile. The fact that many affected PJs are seasonal specials also doesn't help getting a prompt fix.

Only thing one can do is not to support Arx while they're selling items that do not match the description (in the form of the images/previews in-game), but since overpriced suit and weapon skins is now where it's at (and those seem to look as advertised based on screenshots here) there's probably little incentive for FDev to put a lot of effort into fixing them all.

I still can't wrap my head around how they managed to destroy every aspect of this game with their stupid, unwanted FPS add-on.
It's like they handed the code over to a troop of primates and let them have at it. It is infuriating. 🤬 I really hope they leave Horizons alone.
