The Super Cobra!

Found myself daydreaming about The Super Cobra.

Apart from very strong nostalgia, the main reason I prefer the Cobra is that it's straightline faster than anything with engines. To quote Han Solo: I like to get out of trouble faster than I get into it*. But I got to doodling in my sketchpad and started considering how good it would be to mash a couple of the hardpoints into one big hardpoint.

The Cobra is more or less an X-Wing. Fast, multipurpose, agile, but not so much that a couple of TIE fighters can't get on its tail and make ol' Porkins think about ejecting. Also, the four hardpoints are kind of spread out in an X.

The Super Cobra, then would be the B-Wing. Two hardpoints melded into one could support a single large gun, like the Vulture. Unlike the Vulture, the Super Cobra wouldn't quite have turning ability, so it would be harder to train that one piece. But if it could, it would pack a wallop! The energy balance would be easier than the Vulture's as well, although the Super Cobra would still be limited by a smallish powerplant and the likelihood of overheating.

Well, it's a daydream, and one I thought I'd share. If anyone is interested, I'll finish off the sketch and post it. I know Frontier isn't looking to the peanut gallery for ideas right now, and I'm not offering this as a suggestion, just as a random thought. I 110% do not expect anyone to think that this should be a thing in the game.

*This is a terrible quote. I'm not even certain Han says this at all, but he's the poster child for going super slow and getting into tons of trouble. Proof: Han personally enrages Darth Vader, arguably the most powerful soldier in the galaxy. It would be hard to get into more trouble than that. And Han gets frozen in carbonite. It would be hard to go any slower than that. So: bad quote.

see my cobra is my super sneaky spy ship - its my smuggler not my fighter

Its manoeuvrability and small size is a winner for me

Mine doesn't even have guns

I just parked my Python and bought a brand new Cobra for smuggling, stealing and spying in my spare time B)

edit: with a nice paintjob of course :D

The forum sure moves fast. Anyhow, here is the pic. I cleaned up the perspective a little and added text and colour. Looking at it, it drifts too far from the iconic Cobra shape. I figured since I wanted the big cannon, the only place for enough room for it would be the long axis of the ship, like an A-10 Warthog. Instead of lifting the cockpit to make room for the gun like the A-10 does, I shifted it off to one side.

There is a Super Cobra attack helicopter (the AH-1) more or less the forerunner to the AH-64 Apache. I liked the idea of a tandem cockpit, so I traded the side-by-side cockpit for an in-line model. I also decided to gull the wings a bit, which is something I like, but both that and the cockpit take away from the classic Cobra look.

Thinking further, you guys are right: smuggling and stealing are way more fun that punching holes in ships. So the Super Cobra lives in my sketchbook, and nowhere else.

EDIT: I apologise for the double pic. Once I attach a file to a post, I cannot unattach it.

OK, I'll play your 6 Degrees game...

I know a retired Marine Cobra chopper pilot who actually plays Elite: Dangerous and flies a Cobra in-game.
He doesn't play as much as he used to.
