Community Event / Creation The Svadilfare: Building a sci-fi simrig

Obligatory hiatus needed this time a year to focus on other things, not the least work.
Expecting to continue work on the simpit during this spring but likely a couple of months away.

With winter, the possibility for me to find a good place to do work on it is very limited so things just have to wait til it gets a little warmer and less snow :)

To be continued!

Wow. That is amazing. I'm currently doing research as I intend to convert a room in my house into a spaceship interior with full flight deck
Just wondering what is the best software to do a 3d design mock-up before I start cutting wood..

Hey there Arty, sorry for replying late.
At this moment in my life i am not engaged in either the building or gaming truth be told as there is alot else im simply put dedicate myself to instead!

To answer you, the program I use and the one I would suggest for anyone new to modelling is Google's "Sketchup".
Its free, simple and lets just about anyone draw models and plans!

Dedicate an evening off or a weekend day to reading/watching some tutorials and learning the program and you will be going! Its really that easy for more simple models like the ones I draw, more advanced techniques isnt really neccessary but available should you choose to go there.

Google sketchup is simply brilliant for a free application and without being the slightest affiliated with google, I wholehartedly recommend it! They really hit the nail on the head with this one.

Thanks for that Enride I will give google sketchup a look.

I have a few things I need to get sorted first, I also have Narcolepsy, so that means I'm struggling on a disabled pension and trying to get things done always takes much longer than you think when you keep falling asleep.

Anyway, I'll post some pics when I get underway

Sketchup is indeed great, but just FYI it wasn't initially developed by Google and isn't any longer owned by them either ... so it's definitely not called Google Sketchup any more, and I'm not sure I'd give Google too much credit for it's awesomeness.

Ah, I was not aware of this and simply just expected it since...well IS there even things google doesnt own anymore :D

But thanks for the info!

Due to limited space, not enough time, lack of workshop and in general no stamina to continue the build its with a bit of sadness im updating the thread to announce the build ended.

The above reasons is what have forced the simpit into storage far longer then intended during which it has sustained damage due to damp and humid air and general abuse of movement.
Very little of it could be salvaged and ive decided to completely scrap the entire project.

The stress of throwing away something ive spent so much time working on is...noticable...and even though it might never have been finished, as long as it was "there" it was still a possibility.
I still have all the pictures, documents and plans/blueprints from the build and would I ever feel like starting a similar project again I will at least have a solid foundation, experience and a good start.

As of now, if I want to return to flightsimming/ED in force I will look into commercial alternatives.

So with that declared, I want to thank everyone that during these years have commented with feedback, advice and kind words. Its been a great time and even though its been on halt for some time its still a fond memory Ill carry with me. Thanks.

Sad to hear CMDR, but completely understandable. Even though you're scrapping the materials, I'm certain the skills and knowledge you acquired and exercised during the project will come in handy in the future. o7

Don't think of it as failure, please!!

You got inspired
You learned skills along the way
You made new friends
You persued dreams
You inspired others
You had FUN doing it
Your results so far were absolutely stunning
You never signed a contract about finishing, nothing's lost
You are free now to pursue new dreams

It's not about the destination, it is about the journey.

Thank you, Enride.

Yes indeed, seeing the build inspired me and I am sure it inspires others to go for it and just build.
For me building is 90% of the fun, then usually boredom sets in and off to other things or builds. lol

Now get out there and start travelling the galaxy.
We shall not forget...

Thank you all for your kind words.
The journey IS indeed the best part of most things as you say Cataclysm and Ive likely spent double the time building and planning then I actually did playing for that reason.
And I doubt I would ever have come to a state of "finish" with the Svadilfare as ive commented before but nontheless it feels astounishingly bad to throw away something ive spent so much time on. Little comfort is gained from the fact that I could not have known it would suffer such damage where it was stored but then again, had I not halted for so long it wouldnt have :/

However, I am looking forward now and among other things ive finally discovered and dived headfirst into VR.

And any respectable VR enthusiast of course needs an equally enthusiastic simpit to complement that VR :)

So while not being a build since im going mostely the expensive commercial route, at least there will be some modding and additions to build up a working and practical VR desktop.
I might fire up a thread with just some pictures of the setup later on.

Again though, thanks for all the kind words, it might sound silly but it does mean a lot.
And ive seen several of your builds, all stunning and impressive and its good to know where Ill be looking when I start a new project in the future [up]

Really looking forward to the finished product, wish I had your skills. I had to use a different tool for mine, my credit card!

Thank you but im afraid, as I mention in my last few posts, the build is no longer in progress :/
I AM however in the process of moving into VR and that will of course require some form of simpit!
But this time ill be going the same path as you, using my plastic as a multitool [up]

Ah damn, well that's what I get for not reading the whole thread. Catch me up on what happened or link me to said post?

Not sure how far you are in figuring out what system to throw your new tool at but I'm a big fan of the Obutto products and have had the Ozone for about 2 years now. No complaints at all, it's not overly expensive, has all the add-ons you need for flight and racing, can do 3 monitors (27"s on the Ozone and 42"s on the Revolution) and is well made and simple to assemble. It was also very easy to retrofit the Pagnian V2 motion platform to it with very little change to the Ozone (just had to raise the pedal platform up to meet the slightly higher seat platform). If you want any details have a look at the post in my footer or feel free to ask.
