The SVR drives much worse in Odyssey than in Horizons

Has anyone else noticed this? I was running a Guardian's ruin site and had to switch between Odyssey and Horizons because some of the pylons bugged and didn't come up and the difference in driving the SVR was really noticeable. I should also add that I play with a HOTAS so maybe keyboard/controller players don't notice this. It felt like the throttle was overly sensitive in Odyssey and barely moving it forward or backward translated into extreme speed inside the game.

I've always used DA off on a controller and it certainly has a different driving model. I wouldn't say it's harder or easier, but it sure drives over rocks a whole lot better (with its own unexpected side results of course). I did on occasion notice some ridiculous acceleration and speed when jumping into an SRV while holding full reverse. It's hard to reproduce, but it went fast.

I just can't seem to tweek my key input to turn small enough. I've pulled and pushed the controls higher and lower on sensitivity and it is still jerking me right/left too many degrees.

I thought I was imaging things, but if you say so I agree

It's true I've been driving DA on with the HOTAS (I used to drive DA off with keyboard since it has a more similar behavior to what you would expect). I'll make some tests the next time I play. Still, it seems to be related to what other CMDR was mentioning above, the delay in acceleration, plus an increase in sensitivity I'd say.

I just finished a Clear Scavanger mission and killed those foot-puppets by SRV turret drive and shoot. I felt no change to Horizons and I was driving SRV a lot on that Guardian Ruins. But it's a time ago, so maybe I am not finetuned for nuances. Basically I had no problems driving and didn't feel any notable change.

Massive, massive throttle lag for me. It's like the SRV is glued to the planet then it suddenly shoots forward.

I note the advice about using Drive Assist Off but I've managed fine without turning it off for almost five years; I'm not sure I even have Drive Assist On/Off bound to anything. Something's broken and I flatter myself it's not my driving.

Alright, so after a few tests, I think I can say driving DA off definitely alleviates the issue. Even then, I still don't what DA off is supposed to do tho apart from removing the selected speed indicator and now, making driving a bit more bearable :p

I think there might be a bit of a delay on the SRV controls in Odyssey. At times, they can feel somewhat unresponsive, even when driving with DA off. This might have something to do with the lag spikes Odyssey suffers from.

There is a bug report for some of the Scarab handling issues that has the 'acknowledged' status since alpha. I created a new issue tracker link after release but they closed that with reason 'duplicate of' and refering back to the original alpha bug report which leads me to think they are still working on it.

The issues in the bug report are:
  • Clipping the front with slight inclines in the terrain
  • Strange auto-righting behaviour when leaning the Scarab on the back or front
Here is the tracker link: https://issues.frontierstore.net/issue-detail/29517

Other people have indeed reports a more sluggish response when using Drive Assist ON. I recommend as always to drive with drive assist off since it allows for a much more direct throttle response in general.

It's obvious to me from Horizons and DA off shouldn't be required just to get sensible behavior. It seems like DA on has almost no response to low throttle input and then lurches to motion once it crosses a threshold. It's very difficult to set the speed to something less than 8-10MPS and hold it which make maneuvers in tight locations very difficult. Add to that the tendency for the SRV to get glued to anything it even bumps into in settlements and it's a real joy. DA off is much better but that should not be required just to get the throttle to work correctly.

DA off allows you to actually drive the SRV. Otherwise the SRV "assists" you by buggering up the controls...
