Most definitely!

Would also say: Retcon the Frontier plot on the Thargoids. Keep them a mysterious, hostile alien race, jumping on unsuspecting players tranversing Witch Space.

Her Imperial Majesty's Space Navy / the Galactic Navy should also feature!

I voted No.
In FFE the storyline was that you helped make peace with the Thargoids.
And things have moved on, there will be enough to do just with other players trying to blow you up (if you play multi-player).
Let's have newer, bigger, badder baddies.

Here comes a stupid question: What the hell is 'witch space'?

Oh, and not too much story in Elite 4, eh? In fact, a story free mode would be very nice.

I'll answer this one ...
"Witch Space" was the type of hyperspace the Thargoids used to travel between systems in the original Elite.
When you jumped from system to system, you passed through this "Witch Space" (if I recall it correctly) and the Thargoids were able to pull you (and other ships too) from your normal hyperspace jump into their "Witch Space".

If you were unfortunate enough to have have this happen to you (and it did happen to me once) you were facing a battle with Thargoid ships and their remote ships (Thargons?). IF you managed to defeat them, you then had to try to jump back to a system and continue your journey, but if your drive was damaged when the Thargoids grabbed you, or you didn't have the fuel, you were stuck there.

Witch Space is the void that you're flying through during hyperspace. There used to be an occurrence in Elite where you'd get an interrupted jump and end up surrounded by Thargoids. It typically wasn't fun times. Your best hope was that you had enough fuel to jump onward to your destination but it wasn't always the way and you'd end up being stranded and have to reload from the last point. If anything it taught you to save your game!!!

haha Snap Alien

I remember there was a pattern of jumps you could do that would always end up with you being pulled into witch space on the version I played I remember doing it and defeating the thargoids but completely lacking any memories of what I did after that.

I've not really followed the games that came after the original elite and how the thargoids were handled in those games but they would be quite suitable for something to keep mysterious and in the background it was one of the things that drew me to playing elite in the first place.

Hmm. Sounds annoying. So: no. ;)

Edit: OP, your poll options are a bit broken. ;)

It would be nice if a particular Thargoid (warrior) faction and their Queen did not comply with the truce with the humans.

Also, defeating the Thargoids in Witch Space should yield some special rewards, such as rare technology/module or maybe even board/tractor one of their intact ships and use/sell it.

In free story mode there should be an option to disable the Thargoids encounters, for people who find it annoying.

Love Bug MkII

Well, with regards to Pioneer and previously on here, I argued that the Thargoids don't necessary have to be hostile if your not hostile to them. In fact, given the right set of circumstances, it could be possible to fight along side them. For an example, in the Amiga version of Elite, when the Thargoids would attack, occasionally there was a human ship with them, usually a Wolf MkII. I always thought that would be cool to lie in wait for hapless fat trading ships traversing Witch Space and ambush em!

Great idea, you're right about the Amiga one I forgot about that.

If you think about FFE's news stories about peace with the Thargoids then I believe they should be present and correct (and peaceful), but relentless if provoked. (For example if you attacked a Thargoid ship, then your chance of a "misjump" into a Thargoid attack would go up). Also, remember that in FFE the news articles never actually mention that INRA officially made peace with the Thargoids - despite the Thargoids meeting with representatives from the Empire, Federation and Alliance.

Shouldn't be to often, but as a rarely element (yes, it was rarely in the older games), it should be in. But a bit more complex. So the Thargoids should be not yust some Ufo attacking from time to time it should be something with more deep.

Rather than an option to disable it just make it so that its a feature of certain more treacherous areas of space, those who don't want to deal with it can avoid those areas, those that are prepared to put more on the line can take the risks with the chance of higher rewards that are only available in those areas (this is what it means to be elite).

This is correct in my view, if you choose to go to a dangerous area of space, be prepared to deal with the consequences. If you cant deal with it, stick to the safer areas
