The Thargoid's Motivation

As most CMDR’s are aware, due to the changing political climate in the human bubble, the Pilot’s Federation is preparing to release a significant update to each ship’s operating system software. As the Pilot’s Federation is the sole provider of ship operating software, we have been at their mercy as far as the accessibility of information, with GALNET being the only source. However, this new software update will include access the Pilot’s Federation historical archives as well as some information recently declassified by the superpowers as the CODEX. Through my “connections” within the Pilot’s Federation I have managed to get my hands on an early beta version of the new software and have been poking around within the information contained within these records. What I have learned has led me to see the current Thargoid conflict in a new light and helped me to understand just what the stakes may be for the Thargoids themselves.

Previously I laid out the case that at the end of the last Thargoid war certain members of INRA had manipulated both the organization and the Thargoids to take complete control of INRA. In addition, while committing genocide against the Thargoids, they used the Mycoid virus to disable and secretly capture a Thargoid mothership to reverse engineer Thargoid technology. Using this reverse engineered technology, they solidified their position of power throughout human civilization. And now that the Thargoids are back they have been searching for their stolen mothership and/or any survivors. For a complete breakdown of the evidence supporting these claims, please see my previous discussion here (fair warning, it is a bit long).

Of particular interest to the current Thargoid conflict are the recently declassified research records recovered from the various abandoned INRA bases that have been discovered. These contain the first verified information regarding the Thargoids to see the light of day in nearly 200 years. The revealed INRA research clarifies the Thargoid hierarchy: Queen, Princess, & Drone. The queen’s and princesses are explained to be at least as intelligent as human beings with drones being less so (though I’m sure they are at least as intelligent as “some” humans). Additionally, it is revealed that the Thargoid queens/princesses can reproduce asexually to create more drones very rapidly, but new queens/princesses are only produced through sexual reproduction. As a result, Thargoid queens do not regard the loss of a drone, or even many drones, any more than we regard “losing an eyelash”. On the other hand, the loss of a queen would be a major setback.

The current leading theory explaining the Thargoids current reentry into human occupied space is that those we are currently encountering are on the losing side of a civil war. As a result, they are retreating through human space so as to use humanity as cannon fodder to slow down their pursuers. We also know that they know about INRA’s actions (at least they know everything we do). This leaves the question, why spend so much time searching the known INRA bases?

My prior theory was that they were searching for the captured mothership and any survivors. This may still be true, somewhat. However, given that the Thargoids don’t seem to care about the fate of any single drone they wouldn’t waste this many resources or time to rescue a ship full of drones. They would also have to know that the ship itself would have been disassembled for research purposes by now. But if INRA captured a living queen and/or princess (or even multiple), that might be worth searching for.

If we assume for a moment that these Thargoids really are on the losing side of a civil war, then finding another queen would make a real difference. The queens, we’re told, can live for hundreds of years. So for one to be alive in captivity after all these years is a definite possibility. Why else would they expend thousands of scouts and interceptors every week in minor skirmishes one or two ships at a time? It is obvious that if they were to mass their forces, they would cut through the bubble like a hot knife through butter. Humanity would not stand a chance. So why expend so many resources on us when those resources would be better utilized against the bigger threat (the other Thargoids)? There seems to be only one reason. We have at least one queen somewhere.

I cannot, at least at this time, even begin to hazard a guess at what benefit is gained by the “Club” by keeping her prisoner, especially after so many years. We already have a mothership and all of the associated technology to research and reverse engineer. Nor can I guess as to why the Thargoids seem to be so sure that the queen is still alive. If they thought that she was probably dead, they wouldn’t still be looking. I can only assume that someone is helping them and feeding them information.

One other point, the Thargoids seem to be becoming even more desperate to find their captured queen(s). They have recently begun throwing more even more resources at us (by some measures more than 50% more), while still avoiding an all-out conflict. Something is likely to break soon. The question is what?

They do behave like they are searching for something. And they escalated their skirmishes in the bubble recently. Instead of just two systems threatened by them, we now have three systems under attack every week.

Although judging by the comms chatter of some NPCs, it also looks like someone is luring them into those systems.

Well, if you were holding a Thargoid queen captive that you were trying to keep secret and you knew there were thousands of Thargoids searching for you, wouldn't you lure them away somewhere (anywhere) else too? On the flip side though, if someone is helping them, they may be slowly guiding them to an unknown destination as well.

Also, this might be pure tin foil, but another CMDR recently noticed a pattern in the attacks. I haven't had the chance to follow up to see if there's actually anything to this though.
