The Wire (January 12, 3301, San Francisco, Earth, Sol system):
In a surprising move, the Truckers Union today filed a $2100 million class and collective action lawsuit against the governments of the Federation, the Alliance and the Empire in the Federation District Court for Earth, Sol system.
Represented by Stanford Nilsen, LLP, a civil rights law firm that has successfully litigated other class action cases in the piloting industry, the Truckers Union seeks to end the cruel and unusual punishment enacted by station authorities in the named factions.
When asked to comment on the litigation, Pete Nilsen of Stanford Nilsen, offered the following comment:
"The named factions have repeated made it harder to survive in the trading business with their death sentence laws for minor infractions, and most recently with the introduction of the '20 second" death sentence for pilots making honest mistakes when docking at space stations. This has hit the Truckers Union particularly hard with a death rate of 0.3% just last year on average, but with a death rate of 96% for Lakon Type-9 pilots. We do not disagree with some fee or punishment, but a certain death sentence is a cruel and unusual punishment for a minor infraction. "
The Alliance and the Empire offered no comment. The Federation press representative Yenny Stardust offered a brief statement:
"We obviously think this law suit is completely unfounded and will fight it vigorously and forcefully. Docking at stations is not mandatory and if their pilots do not like the rules, they are free to dock somewhere else."
Aaron Hansen, a member of the Truckers Union, gave this statement in a interview at the star docks at Earth:
"I'm the last remaining member of my family after both my younger brothers have been killed while forgetting to ask for docking permission in their Type-9 trading ship. I'm still doing it, but strongly consider quitting as it's not worth risking my life for this."
