General / Off-Topic The Two Major Enemies of a Free Society

Cogent and real. Great post. Good luck getting any kind of clear thinking out of posts on here. Too much academic regurgitation for anyone to cut through.

The tinfoil hat is strong with that guy.

Aye! :D Titanium plating strong.

There are no such thing as enemies of anything! All things can be used wisely / wrongly or abused. Used / done(did) as an excuse or for the right reason, or just because. It can be twisted and corrupted, cleaned, and restored. Left how it is. And and and and... So much about this.

I love how his silly "someone even asked to have bees protected, haha!" has become a painful example of where he is wrong. If anyone needed any evidence following the latest crisis, that is.

"Less regulation for the banks, I am sure they will use that sensibly and responsibly. Invisible hand! No government needed! Wait, where did all the money go?"

I always pre-emptively discredit other people's posts too, saves me the time to actually think. :)

Ah, yes, because realizing the idiocy of discussions on here means "I don't think."

Sorry. No.

Not really, pretty clever guy, by any standard :)

Being clever doesn't preclude people from believing stupid stuff.

As for the whole referendum thing: that is the opposite from representative democracy. The theory behind representative democracy is that managing our society is so complicated that we, as a society, choose representatives to do so for us. With that in mind these representatives should be able to spend their entire time examining the issues and making a judgement on what is best going forward. Obviously how it works in practice may be different, but that's down to application.

Referendums are dangerous because you have uninformed people making simple decisions on complex subjects. Aha, you may say, what about stupid people voting for candidates? Well, the system should filter out the uninformed or stupid candidates, so stupid voters should only be voting for more informed candidates on whichever side.

Now, how this works in practice and how it can be subverted is another matter! [hehe]

Some of what he says makes sense, but the real hardcore free-market/libertarian thinkers don't follow their ideas to the obvious conclusion. Ayn Rand certainly didn't...

That really didn't come across in that video...

True. He didn't clearly state 2 points, he was waffling.

To be fair, he seemed to be preaching to the converted, and just generally feeding them whatever they wanted to hear.

The "converted" in this case being people who believe that road traffic safety laws and rules telling people in dangerous workplace to wear hard hats are oppressive dictatorships?

He really has to think what bees are good for and how to call their "act" (what an awkward moment, an adult in his 60ies? trying to come up with a word for bees humping flowers)?

What a shmuck.
That's not "college" level stuff, that's "shut up, sit down and let people explain you the world before you start talking" level.

The two main enemies of a free society - ignorance and ingorance of ignorance.

Choose between libertarian fantasy or food. If you actually have to think about that then there isn't a whole lot going on upstairs, so to speak.
