The two scariest words for an Explorer...

I begin cycling through the Fs & Gs nearby.

And then.

I hear it.

sorry, don't get it...you began fuel scooping when you weren't near a sun?

As an noob explorer I like those words ("fuel scooping")...means I'm not going to run out of juice any time soon.

I assumed he means that he didn't throttle to zero before switching to galactic map and hence is about to crash into the system primary, but I could be wrong.

In my experience the worst time to hear those words are immediately upon entering a system, as it means that you've jumped right into the scoop zone of a close binary companion and things are about to get a bit toasty...

At least you were in the galaxy map & could exit it....could have been worse, you could have been waiting for the System Map to decide to load!

I NEVER leave the main view screen when facing a Sun or planet, i always point my ship away from an object b4 leaving the main screen

I agree Gooddoc...I always move away from the primary star of a system before entering System or Galaxy mode...I learned the hard way and (as Sonicology stated) things got a little toasty...

For me, the two scariest words are...

'Server Update'

Only kidding, Im sure today's update is going to be great!!!

I can't help getting the feeling there is more to the story, so I'll bite.

What next?

Full Story:
Ok, so I was on the run back from exploring Ks, G Class and F Class stars to the bubble (for those new to exploring - the colloquial term for human space). When I left a month ago, I had set myself a goal of five unexplored Earth-Like Worlds and five unexplored Ammonias. I ended with five ELWs, nine Ammonias, plus two Water Giants. And more Water Worlds and High Metals than I bothered to count. I was no longer really exploring - just cherry picking in a straight line home. And that's when it happened. After the gazzillionth jump (I'm in a Cobra Mk III), I've got a routine going of jump, cut the throttle with the keyboard hotkey, switch to system map, nothing of interest, jump and repeat.

Except this time, I guess I didn't hit the throttle kill switch cleanly. So, the map loads up and I start looking for the next G Class or F Class on the way home when Shirley says, "Fuel Scooping". I'm not a bright man, but I've been around enough to know that's a bad thing when your navi-comm display is covering up your viewport and your ship announces it's heading for the corona. So, I'm spilling coffee as I slam the keys to get out of the map view, then perform an Emergency Drop out of Super Cruise to keep myself from burning up. Once my head stopped spinning, I powered down everything that wasn't essential and jumped out.

All good. A few more grey hairs. A slightly bigger bill from the mechanics at Schumacher Vision in the Awonggalis system.

It was all worth it when I saw my name on the galactic charts:

3 terraformable Water Worlds, plus 10 High Metals (3 of which were also terraformable) = 301,260CR:
And the Pilot Federation skipped the ceremonies and immediately bumped me from Mostly Aimless to Ranger:

...and signature updated accordingly. ;)

True. :)

I always do something else while fuel scooping. Scan the star while looking at the System map. Check the route or make a cup of tea.
Mind you, I always check that I have stopped and the temperature is less than 65% and not rising.
The only problem I've had was when my Hotas glitched and set the throttle to 50% ahead. But that was obvious by the engine sounds and was only a minor panic. ;)
